Automated Acquisition and Analysis of Digital Radiographic Images (open access)

Automated Acquisition and Analysis of Digital Radiographic Images

'Engineers at the Savannah River Technology Center have designed, built, and installed a fully automated small field-of-view, lens-coupled, digital radiography imaging system. The system is installed in one of the Savannah River Site''s production facilities to be used for the evaluation of production components. Custom software routines developed for the system automatically acquire, enhance, and diagnostically evaluate critical geometric features of various components that have been captured radiographically. Resolution of the digital radiograms and accuracy of the acquired measurements approaches 0.001 inches. To date, there has been zero deviation in measurement repeatability. The automated image acquisition methodology will be discussed, unique enhancement algorithms will be explained, and the automated routines for measuring the critical component features will be presented. An additional feature discussed is the independent nature of the modular software components, which allows images to be automatically acquired, processed, and evaluated by the computer in the background, while the operator reviews other images on the monitor. System components were also a key in gaining the required image resolution. System factors such as scintillator selection, x-ray source energy, optical components and layout, as well as geometric unsharpness issues are considered in the paper. Finally the paper examines the numerous quality …

Characterization engineering status report october 1998 - december 1998 (open access)

Characterization engineering status report october 1998 - december 1998

Characterization Engineering (CE) continues to make progress in support of the project goal of characterizing the Hanford high-level waste tanks. Two core sampling systems were operational during this reporting period-push mode core sampling system No. 1 and rotary mode core sampling system No. 4. The availability average for core sampling systems No. 1 , No. 3 and No. 4, combined, was 45 percent, down from 79percent for the previous quarter and 58 percent for FY 1998. System No. 2 did not have scope during the quarter, and availability was not hacked. System No. 3 was out of service the entire quarter for corrective maintenance. Two tanks were core sampled during the reporting period, and 24 samples were retrieved. Core sample recovery increased slightly during the quarter. System No. 1 average sample recovery increased from 80percent to 81 percent, The rotary mode core sampling average recovery increased to 62 percent from 55 percent for the previous quarter. sampling six tanks, one more than scheduled. Vapor Sampling was utilized in support of the sluicing of tank 241-C-106 and for emissions monitoring of three exhaust stacks. Increased support was provided for Vapor Sampling the Standard Hydrogen Monitoring Systems. The sampling was necessary due …

Electrodynamic Properties of Single-Crystal and Thin-Film Strontium Titanate (open access)

Electrodynamic Properties of Single-Crystal and Thin-Film Strontium Titanate

The authors present a comparative study of broadband electrodynamic properties of coplanar waveguides made from nonlinear dielectric single-crystal and thin-film SrTiO{sub 3} (STO) with high-temperature superconducting thin-film YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-{delta}} electrodes. The waveguides that use single-crystal STO exhibit a monotonic increase in refractive index, dielectric nonlinearity, and dissipation with decreasing temperature (from 80 K to 20 K), whereas those based on thin-film STO show similar but weaker effects with increasing temperature. Under dc bias, both types of waveguides show reduced refractive index, but dissipation increases in the case of single-crystal STO, while it decreases in the case of STO thin-films.

Evaluation of accident frequencies at the canister storage building (open access)

Evaluation of accident frequencies at the canister storage building

By using the fault tree logic, an evaluation of the design basis accident frequencies at the Canister Storage Building has been performed. The evaluation demonstrates that due to low frequency of occurrences, the following design basis accidents are considered not credible (annual frequency of less than 10{sup -6}): Rearrangement of multi-canister overpack (MCO) internals; Gaseous release from the MCO; MCO internal hydrogen explosion; MCO external hydrogen explosion; Thermal runaway reactions inside the MCO; and Violation of design temperature criteria.

Evaluation of the use of homogenized fuel assemblies in the thermal analysis of spent fuel storage casks (open access)

Evaluation of the use of homogenized fuel assemblies in the thermal analysis of spent fuel storage casks

Thermal analysis of spent fuel storage casks has generally been based on the assumption that heat released by the fuel assemblies is transported to the cask cavity only by conduction through the walls of the basket. This conservative assumption was adopted to compensate for uncertainties in modeling heat transfer in the cavity of a spent fuel cask. During recent years, some applications have submitted safety analysis reports for spent fuel storage casks that challenge this assumption. They offer two methods which include the fuel assemblies, as well as the walls of the basket, as part of the path for heat transfer to the cask cavity. A third method, the consideration of a fuel assembly as a homogeneous log, is explored in a study described in this report.

Exploring New Active Regions for Type 1 InasSb Strained-Layer Lasers (open access)

Exploring New Active Regions for Type 1 InasSb Strained-Layer Lasers

We report on the metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of mid- infrared InAsSb/InPSb optically pumped lasers grown using a high speed rotating disk reactor (RDR). The devices contain AlAsSb claddings and strained, type 1, InAsSb/InPSb active regions. By changing the layer thickness and composition of InAsSb/InPSb SLSs, we have prepared structures with low temperature (<20K) photoluminescence wavelengths ranging from 3.4 to 4.8 µm. We find a variation of bandgap from 0.272 to 0.324 eV for layer thicknesses of 9.0 to 18.2 nm. From these data we have estimated a valence band offset for the InAsSb/InPSb interface of about 400 meV. An InAsSb/InPSb SLS, optically pumped laser structure was grown on an InAs substrate with AlAs0.l6Sb0.84 claddings. A lasing threshold and spectrally narrowed laser emission was seen from 80 K through 200 K, the maximum temperature where Iasing occurred. The temperature dependence of the SLS laser threshold is described by a characteristic temperature, T0 = 72 K, from 80 to 200 K.
