The 239 Pu(n,2n)238Pu cross section: preliminary calculations (open access)

The 239 Pu(n,2n)238Pu cross section: preliminary calculations

The primary motivation for the present work is to provide theoretical values for the ratio of the partial 239Pu(n,2nx{gamma})238Pu to total 239 Pu(n,2n)238Pu cross section for several discrete gamma transitions. Results and conclusions of preliminary calculations from threshold to 20 MeV are presented. Calculations are based on theoretical models with parameters obtained from the literature or from our ad hoc systematics. Optical model cross sections and transmission coefficients were determined using the coupled-channels method. The calculations included a preequilibrium component followed by multiple particle and gamma-ray emissions. Fission competition was included at all stages of de-excitation. Suggestions for further verifications and possible improvements are provided.

1999 Gordon Research Conference on Mammalian DNA Repair. Final Progress Report (open access)

1999 Gordon Research Conference on Mammalian DNA Repair. Final Progress Report

This Conference will examine DNA repair as the key component in genomic surveillance that is so crucial to the overall integrity and function of mammalian cells. Recent discoveries have catapulted the field of DNA repair into a pivotal position for fundamental investigations into oncology, aging, environmental health, and developmental biology. We hope to highlight the most promising and exciting avenues of research in robust discussions at this conference. This Mammalian DNA Repair Gordon Conference differs from the past conferences in this series, in which the programs were broader in scope, with respect to topics and biological systems covered. A conference sponsored by the Genetics Society in April 1998 emphasized recombinational mechanisms for double-strand break repair and the role of mismatch repair deficiency in colorectal cancer. These topics will therefore receive somewhat less emphasis in the upcoming Conference. In view of the recent mechanistic advances in mammalian DNA repair, an upcoming comprehensive DNA repair meeting next autumn at Hilton Head; and the limited enrollment for Gordon Conferences we have decided to focus session-by-session on particular areas of controversy and/or new developments specifically in mammalian systems. Thus, the principal presentations will draw upon results from other cellular systems only to the extent …

Absorbance and Photoluminescence of Si, Ge, and MoS2 Nanoparticles Studied by Liquid Chromatography (open access)

Absorbance and Photoluminescence of Si, Ge, and MoS2 Nanoparticles Studied by Liquid Chromatography

The authors have successfully synthesized highly crystalline, size-selected indirect band-gap nanocrystals (NC) of Si, Ge and MoS{sub 2} in the size range 2-10 nm in inverse micelles and studied their optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) properties using liquid chromatography. Room temperature, visible PL from these nanocrystals was demonstrated in the range 700-350 nm (1.8-3.5 eV). their experimental results are interpreted in terms of the corresponding electronic structure of the bulk materials and it is demonstrated that these nanocrystals retain bulk-like electronic character to sizes as small as 2 nm, but the absorbance energies are strongly blue-shifted by quantum confinement. The experimental results on Si-NCs are also compared to earlier work on Si clusters grown by other techniques and to the predictions of various model calculations. Currently, the wide variations in the theoretical predictions of the various models along with considerable uncertainties in experimental size determination for clusters less than 3-4 nm, make it difficult to select the best model.

Acceptance and Operational Test Report for Neutron and Gamma Probe Application to Tank 241-SY-101 MITs

This Operational Test Report (OTR) presents the results of the ATP/OTP testing performed to verify that newly procured neutron and gamma probes (reduced diameter design modifications) for operation in the Tank 241-SY-101 MITs are compatible with existing LOW van instrumentation and hardware. This verification was accomplished and a set of moisture data versus elevation were obtained from the Tank 241-SY-101 MITs as part of this testing program.

Accessibillity of Electron Bernstein Modes in Over-Dense Plasma (open access)

Accessibillity of Electron Bernstein Modes in Over-Dense Plasma

Mode-conversion between the ordinary, extraordinary and electron Bernstein modes near the plasma edge may allow signals generated by electrons in an over-dense plasma to be detected. Alternatively, high frequency power may gain accessibility to the core plasma through this mode conversion process. Many of the tools used for ion cyclotron antenna de-sign can also be applied near the electron cyclotron frequency. In this paper, we investigate the possibilities for an antenna that may couple to electron Bernstein modes inside an over-dense plasma. The optimum values for wavelengths that undergo mode-conversion are found by scanning the poloidal and toroidal response of the plasma using a warm plasma slab approximation with a sheared magnetic field. Only a very narrow region of the edge can be examined in this manner; however, ray tracing may be used to follow the mode converted power in a more general geometry. It is eventually hoped that the methods can be extended to a hot plasma representation. Using antenna design codes, some basic antenna shapes will be considered to see what types of antennas might be used to detect or launch modes that penetrate the cutoff layer in the edge plasma.

ACRV instrumentation plan for NMD HTK light gas gun tests (open access)

ACRV instrumentation plan for NMD HTK light gas gun tests

In support of the NMD Hit-To-Kill Program for the US Army, twenty scaled tests on simulated nuclear targets are planned. The AEDC Light Gas Gun operated by Sverdrup Technology (SVT) in Tullahoma, TN will launch the scaled NMD projectile into scaled targets. The target for all the tests is a 1/4-scale version of the Attitude Controlled Re-Entry Vehicle (ACRV). The targets were designed and fabricated by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). ITT Systems (ITT) is the integrating contractor for coordination of the multiple contractors involved in these tests. The targets are inert and contain no hazardous materials. The payloads have been instrumented to aid in post-test evaluation of the functional status of the postulated weapon systems. This document describes the instrumentation methods to be used on these tests.
