Analysis for Eccentric Multi Canister Overpack (MCO) Drops at the Canister Storage Building (CSB) (CSB-S-0073) (open access)

Analysis for Eccentric Multi Canister Overpack (MCO) Drops at the Canister Storage Building (CSB) (CSB-S-0073)

Multi-Canister Overpacks (MCOs) containing spent nuclear fuel (SNF) will be routinely handled at the Canister Storage Building (CSB) during fuel movement operations in the SNF Project. This analysis was performed to investigate the potential for damage from an eccentric accidental drop onto the standard storage tube, overpack tube, service station, or sample/weld station. Appendix D was added to the FDNW document to include the peer Review Comment Record & transmittal record.

CBI/NAFTA Parity Proposals: A Comparison (open access)

CBI/NAFTA Parity Proposals: A Comparison

The tariff and quota treatment of U.S. imports from Mexico under the North American Free Trade Agreement has resulted in a distinct and increasing competitive disadvantage for imports from the beneficiary countries of the Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act (CBERA). To eliminate this disadvantage, proposals have been made to extend to imports from Caribbean Basin countries preferential treatment equivalent to that accorded imports of identical goods from Mexico. This report compares the provisions of four such proposals: Title I of H.R. 984, Title I of S. 371, H.R. 1834, and S. 1389.

Development and Design of a User Interface for a Computer Automated Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning System (open access)

Development and Design of a User Interface for a Computer Automated Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning System

A user interface is created to monitor and operate the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. The interface is networked to the system's programmable logic controller. The controller maintains automated control of the system. The user through the interface is able to see the status of the system and override or adjust the automatic control features. The interface is programmed to show digital readouts of system equipment as well as visual queues of system operational statuses. It also provides information for system design and component interaction. The interface is made easier to read by simple designs, color coordination, and graphics. Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermi lab) conducts high energy particle physics research. Part of this research involves collision experiments with protons, and anti-protons. These interactions are contained within one of two massive detectors along Fermilab's largest particle accelerator the Tevatron. The D-Zero Assembly Building houses one of these detectors. At this time detector systems are being upgraded for a second experiment run, titled Run II. Unlike the previous run, systems at D-Zero must be computer automated so operators do not have to continually monitor and adjust these systems during the run. Human intervention should only be necessary for system start …

Milestone Report for High NA Optics Development International Sematech Project L1TH 112 Milestone4a: Specification Package for the Polished Mirror Substrate M1 (open access)

Milestone Report for High NA Optics Development International Sematech Project L1TH 112 Milestone4a: Specification Package for the Polished Mirror Substrate M1

The key task in initiating the fabrication of mirror substrates for the new High NA Camera is in preparing the specification package that details the substrate geometry and the specifications for the optical surface. This specification package has been completed for substrate M1, and the vendor has begun optical fabrication. In addition, mounting hardware has been designed and fabricated, and substrates have been bonded to the kinematic mounts. The design of the secondary substrate, M2, is underway, but will depend upon details of the PO Box actuation system and space constraints. Sufficient details of the M2 design to enable the vendor to procure material will be determined during October, while the final details of the mounting surfaces will be completed prior to the end of Q4 1999. The geometry of the Ml substrate is compatible with our planned approach for fixturing the optic within the PO Box and within metrology tools. The completion of this specification package required detailed consideration of: the mounting approach within the PO Box, degrees of actuation required for PO Box alignment, space constraints imposed by the vendor's metrology, requirements for LLNL metrology, and datum definitions needed for mechanical assembly of the PO Box. In addition, …

The potential for reducing energy utilization in the refining industry (open access)

The potential for reducing energy utilization in the refining industry

The paper first discusses energy use in petroleum refineries and CO{sub 2} emissions because of the fuels used. Then the paper looks at near-, mid-, and long-term opportunities for energy reduction. Some of the options are catalysts, cooling water recycling, steam system efficiency, and the use of coke and petroleum residues.

Quarterly Report for High NA Optics Development: Q3-1999 International Sematech Project LITH 112

This quarterly report provides a status update for each of the milestones for the International Sematech project on the development of high-NA optics for a small-field EUVL exposure tool. The optical design has been completed, which employs two aspheric mirrors yielding diffraction-limited imaging within a 600 {micro}m x 200 {micro}m field with a numerical aperture of 0.3 and a 5x reduction. Preliminary aerial image calculations show good resolution of 30nm features with partially coherent illumination. Contracts have been awarded for the fabrication and multilayer coating of the mirror elements and a detailed specification package has been generated for one of the mirror substrates (M1). Metrology instrumentation is being assembled and fabrication has been initiated on M1. Key progress includes the design and fabrication of kinematic mounting fixtures that enable the vendor to perform interferometry in a geometry compatible with PO Box fixturing. The first substrate is proceeding according to schedule, with delivery expected in December 1999.

Second and Third Quarters Hanford Seismic Report for Fiscal Year 1999

Hanford Seismic Monitoring provides an uninterrupted collection of high-quality raw and processed seismic data from the Hanford Seismic Network (HSN) for the U.S. Department of Energy and its contractors. Hanford Seismic Monitoring also locates and identifies sources of seismic activity and monitors changes in the historical pattern of seismic activity at the Hanford Site.

Short note on undulator alignments and beam tolerances for the APS FEL at 220 MeV (open access)

Short note on undulator alignments and beam tolerances for the APS FEL at 220 MeV

The APS FEL consists of a series of undulators that must be carefully aligned for optimum gain and high spectral output. In order to get a better understanding of acceptable tolerance levels for undulator alignments and for the electron beam, the authors have performed computer calculations to simulate misalignments of one undulator (undulator number 2) with respect to adjacent undulators and to check the sensitivity to unmatched beam parameters ({alpha} and {beta}) at the entrance and to a noncentered incident beam x{sub o}, x{sub o}{prime}, y{sub o}, y{sub o}{prime}. They have not simulated horizontal misalignments because the undulators focus only in the vertical direction and horizontal alignments are therefore much more relaxed than vertical alignments. The exact placement and strength of the quadrupoles in the breaks need also to be addressed in follow up studies and are not presented here. Further, inherent undulator magnetic field errors have not been investigated here and will also be the subject for another study. Note, the tolerances listed in this note may be used for guidance only and will need to be updated when they have updated beam parameters.
