Recording of Christian Calon's Time well (la fontaine du temps). This work was commissioned by Ina-GRM with the help of the CAC and premiered at the Maison de Radio France in 2002. This work belongs to both a radio work (z | s) and sound installation (Time Corridor) that act as projects centered on the question of time. This piece is meant to create awareness of time through listening and is segmented into 4 tracks.

Recording of Jorge Rapp's Tres momentos. This work was produced at Rapp's CEM Sound Laboratory and the eight channel version was composed in the LIPM. The composer separates the piece into three sections: the first is dedicated to electronic sounds, the second consists of a processed male voice, and the third incorporates a modified choir sound mixed with materials from the first two sections.

The composer describes this work as a "collage" made up of grains of music created the the last few decades by musicians close to his heart. One piece included in this recording is "The Rite of Spring" by Stravinsky. This recording is meant to highlight the end of a century and the start of a new one.

Recording of Natasha Barrett's Viva la Selva!. This work consists of 4 continuous sections: 1. Morning introduction, 2. Midday heat, 3. Dancing at night, and 4. Dawn and rain. The sound sources in this work were recorded in a Central American rain forest, where the composer and their colleague traveled to record said samples. This work was commissioned by NICEM with support from the Norwegian composers' fund.

This composition was created for the 1999 DVD project "Flash" by the Bifrons Foundation in which composers and visual artists were invited to create audio-visual productions. This work used various electronic sound samples, primarily a stopwatch counting down.

Recording of Frederick L. Malouf's What it is ain't exactly clear.... This work is a "remix" of a recording the composer made at a family reunion in 1995. It is the third in a series that uses the same sound material, however in this piece the sounds are much more processed. The title comes from the lyrics to "For What It's Worth" by Stephen Stills which is about the turbulence in the 1960's. The composer also used family photos which were transformed into sound using the MetaSynth software program.

This dissertation is an exploration of relationships between fiction and history as illuminated by historiographic fiction in general and the historiographic novel in particular. Here the term historiography is employed particularly in several of its many meanings: as the study of the materials and techniques of history, the study of what it means to be a historian, and the study of the philosophy of history. All of these are comprehended in the larger definition of issues pertaining to the writing of history. Four twentieth-century novels are presented and analyzed as historiographic novels. The common element in analysis of all the novels is the examination of historiographic material encoded in narrative, plot, characters, theme, structure or style. Each analysis focuses on one historiographic assumption or problem and brings in perspectives of historians or theorists of history as well as non-novelistic, critical perspectives of the authors themselves. E. M. Forster's Howards End (1910) is analyzed as an imaginative exposé of causality in historical thinking. All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren (1946) is presented as a gloss on Isaiah Berlin's critique of Leo Tolstoy's second epilogue to War and Peace. Recording of Philip Samartzis' Windmills bordered by Nothingness. The original material in this work is made up of electroacoustic transformations of guitar and percussion. The composer altered them in a such a way to suggest the flow, texture, and sound of an ancient windmill.

Recording of Matthew Burtner's The Winter raven. This recording is a collection of excerpts from a live performance of the opera. This is a large-scale multimedia composition for voice, instrumental ensemble, electronics, dance ensemble, video projection, and theatrical staging. The three act composition metaphorically connects an Inuit creation story, in which the world is created by "Raven" with snow, with the ecological seasonal approach of winter. Each act contains a chamber music piece with video and a "story" involving music, dance, and interactive video. This piece was inspired by the composers home in Alaska and was written as part of his dissertation at Stanford University. It premiered at the University of Virginia in 2003.

This follows an earlier study of the same data set, which, through its findings, presented new questions that are investigated in this study. Both studies used a prospective controlled design, wherein women receiving genetic counseling for breast cancer risk were randomized into two groups. Subjects receiving an audiotaped recording of their genetic consultation (tape group) were compared to subjects who also had a genetic consultation but did not receive an audiotaped recording of it (no-tape group). Participants were drawn from attendees at the genetic clinics of two London hospitals and included 115 women with a family history of breast cancer. Cancer worry and psychological distress were assessed before genetic consultation (baseline), and at one- and six-month follow-ups by post. Objective risk was estimated by the geneticist during the consultation, and subjective risk was assessed at one month follow-up. The goals of the current study were to investigate relationships between cancer worry, psychological distress, and recall of genetic risk for breast cancer in a sample of women receiving genetic counseling for breast cancer risk, and to investigate the role sociodemographic variables on cancer worry, psychological distress, or risk recall for these women.
