Development & Testing of Industrial Scale, Coal Fired Combustion System, Phase 3 (open access)

Development & Testing of Industrial Scale, Coal Fired Combustion System, Phase 3

In the fourth quarter of calendar year 1997, 11 days of tests on the 20 MMBtu/hr combustor-boiler facility were performed as part of a parallel project on sulfur capture in slag. No work was performed on the present project in this quarter. The total test days on the Philadelphia facility to the end of December 1997 was 103, of which 30 tests were part of the other DOE project. This exceeds the planned 63 test days for this project. All key project objectives have been exceeded including combustor durability, automated combustor operation, NO emissions as x low as 0.07 lb/MMBtu and SO emissions as low as 0.2 lb/MMBtu. In addition, a novel post- 2 combustion NOx control process has been tested on a 37 MW and 100 MW utility boiler. Any further tests will depend on the results of evaluations of current and prior tests. The only effort remaining on this project is facility disassembly and Final Report. This report also contains clarification of project results reported in the 22 Quarterly Technical Report in response to nd comments by DOE.

Co-adsorption studies of hydrogen with nitrogen in zeolites. (open access)

Co-adsorption studies of hydrogen with nitrogen in zeolites.

The use of co-adsorption studies of N{sub 2} with H{sub 2} makes it possible to obtain information about adsorption of N{sub 2} by monitoring changes in the rotational spectrum of the co-adsorbed H{sub 2} molecules. We present such results on N{sub 2}/H{sub 2} in Na-13X.

Collaborative virtual reality environments for computational science and design. (open access)

Collaborative virtual reality environments for computational science and design.

The authors are developing a networked, multi-user, virtual-reality-based collaborative environment coupled to one or more petaFLOPs computers, enabling the interactive simulation of 10{sup 9} atom systems. The purpose of this work is to explore the requirements for this coupling. Through the design, development, and testing of such systems, they hope to gain knowledge that allows computational scientists to discover and analyze their results more quickly and in a more intuitive manner.

Detection of anthropogenic climate change: a modeling study (open access)

Detection of anthropogenic climate change: a modeling study

This project involved two related areas of research: (1) simulating natural climate variability using a global climate model, and (2) using the computer resources of the Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI) Blue computer for specific problems in atmospheric science and climate. Although originally scheduled to last two years, this ER project ended after one year; the work is begin continued under a larger (Strategic Initiative) project which started in FY99.

Development of Ag-clad Bi-2223 superconductors for electric power applications. (open access)

Development of Ag-clad Bi-2223 superconductors for electric power applications.

Development of high-temperature superconductor technology will make possible the design and fabrication of smaller, lighter, and more efficient power devices such as motors, generators, transformers, transmission cables, and fault-current limiters. A prototype fault-current limiter, a 200-hp motor, and a 50-m-long transmission cable have already been demonstrated using Ag-clad Bi-2223 superconductor tapes. We have recently enhanced the transport current properties of long lengths of multifilament Ag-clad Bi-2223 tapes through increased packing density of precursor powder, improved mechanical deformation, optimization of conductor design, and adjusted cooling rate. These improved processing parameters had a pronounced effect on the transport critical current of the super-conducting tapes. Our improvements are briefly discussed and their implications are assessed in this paper.

Gamma ray burst model (open access)

Gamma ray burst model

We present a model for gamma ray bursts based on the compression of neutron stars in close binary systems. Our general relativistic hydrodynamiccomputer simulations of close neutron star binaries have found that as the orbit shrinks the density of the neutron stars rises. This compressional effect has been estimated to produce thermal energies in the neutron stars of the order of magnitude 10{sup 52}to 10{sup 53} ergs on a timescale of a few seconds. This is a possible source of energy for gamma-ray bursts. The hot neutron stars will emit neutrino pairs which will partially recombine to form an electron positron pair plasma. The pair plasma will recombine after expansion to produce photons which closely mimic the characteristics of gamma-raybursts.

The healthy building intervention study: Objectives, methods and results of selected environmental measurements (open access)

The healthy building intervention study: Objectives, methods and results of selected environmental measurements

To test proposed methods for reducing SBS symptoms and to learn about the causes of these symptoms, a double-blind controlled intervention study was designed and implemented. This study utilized two different interventions designed to reduce occupants` exposures to airborne particles: (1) high efficiency filters in the building`s HVAC systems; and (2) thorough cleaning of carpeted floors and fabric-covered chairs with an unusually powerful vacuum cleaner. The study population was the workers on the second and fourth floors of a large office building with mechanical ventilation, air conditioning, and sealed windows. Interventions were implemented on one floor while the occupants on the other floor served as a control group. For the enhanced-filtration intervention, a multiple crossover design was used (a crossover is a repeat of the experiment with the former experimental group as the control group and vice versa). Demographic and health symptom data were collected via an initial questionnaire on the first study week and health symptom data were obtained each week, for eight additional weeks, via weekly questionnaires. A large number of indoor environmental parameters were measured during the study including air temperatures and humidities, carbon dioxide concentrations, particle concentrations, concentrations of several airborne bioaerosols, and concentrations of several …
