Achieving Sustainable Construction in Affordable Housing (open access)

Achieving Sustainable Construction in Affordable Housing

An energy-efficient design and construction checklist and information sheets on energy-efficient design and construction are two products being developed. These products will help affordable housing providers take the first steps toward a whole-house approach to the design and implementation of energy-efficient construction practices. The checklist presents simple and clear guidance on energy improvements that can be readily addressed now by most affordable housing providers. The information sheets complement the checklist by providing installation instructions and material specifications that are accompanied by detailed graphics. The information sheets also identify benefits of recommended energy-efficiency measures and procedures including cost savings and impacts on health and comfort. This paper presents details on the checklist and information sheets and discusses their use in two affordable housing projects.

Advanced lubrication systems and materials. Final report (open access)

Advanced lubrication systems and materials. Final report

This report described the work conducted at the National Institute of Standards and Technology under an interagency agreement signed in September 1992 between DOE and NIST for 5 years. The interagency agreement envisions continual funding from DOE to support the development of fuel efficient, low emission engine technologies in terms of lubrication, friction, and wear control encountered in the development of advanced transportation technologies. However, in 1994, the DOE office of transportation technologies was reorganized and the tribology program was dissolved. The work at NIST therefore continued at a low level without further funding from DOE. The work continued to support transportation technologies in the development of fuel efficient, low emission engine development. Under this program, significant progress has been made in advancing the state of the art of lubrication technology for advanced engine research and development. Some of the highlights are: (1) developed an advanced high temperature liquid lubricant capable of sustaining high temperatures in a prototype heat engine; (2) developed a novel liquid lubricant which potentially could lower the emission of heavy duty diesel engines; (3) developed lubricant chemistries for ceramics used in the heat engines; (4) developed application maps for ceramic lubricant chemistry combinations for design purpose; …

Advanced Reservoir Characterization and Evaluation of CO{sub 2} Gravity Drainage in the Naturally Fractured Spraberry Trend Area. Quarterly Technical Report (open access)

Advanced Reservoir Characterization and Evaluation of CO{sub 2} Gravity Drainage in the Naturally Fractured Spraberry Trend Area. Quarterly Technical Report

The overall goal of this project is to assess the economic feasibility of CO{sub 2} flooding the naturally fractured Spraberry Trend Area in West Texas. This objective is being accomplished by conducting research in four areas: (1) extensive characterization of the reservoirs, (2) experimental studies of crude oil/brine/rock (COBR) interaction in the reservoirs, (3) analytical and numerical simulation of Spraberry reservoirs, and, (4) experimental investigations on CO{sub 2} gravity drainage in Spraberry whole cores. This report provides results of the fourth quarter of 1997 in the fourth area.

Advances in X-Ray Computed Microtomography at the NSLS (open access)

Advances in X-Ray Computed Microtomography at the NSLS

The X-Ray Computed Microtomography workstation at beamline X27A at the NSLS has been utilized by scientists from a broad range of disciplines from industrial materials processing to environmental science. The most recent applications are presented here as well as a description of the facility that has evolved to accommodate a wide variety of materials and sample sizes. One of the most exciting new developments reported here resulted from a pursuit of faster reconstruction techniques. A Fast Filtered Back Transform (FFBT) reconstruction program has been developed and implemented, that is based on a refinement of the ''gridding'' algorithm first developed for use with radio astronomical data. This program has reduced the reconstruction time to 8.5 sec for a 929 x 929 pixel{sup 2} slice on an R10,000 CPU, more than 8x reduction compared with the Filtered Back-Projection method.

Analytical electron microscopy of bimetallic catalysts. Final report (open access)

Analytical electron microscopy of bimetallic catalysts. Final report

The report summarizes the accomplishments, publications, and reception of this program in the catalyst and microanalytical communities. Initially the research covered a wide range of catalysts, but later in the program, the author prepared and optimized a highly active catalyst for low-temperature NO abatement in fossil fuel power plants. During the course of the program, several innovations in microanalytical instrumentation and technique were developed specifically for analysis of catalytic nanoparticles. New designs for improved nanoparticle elemental sensitivity were proposed and accepted by the manufacture of Lehigh`s new VG /HB-603 analytical electron microscope. New tests for assessing elemental sensitivity have been devised and used to encourage the manufacturer to build the most sensitive analytical electron microscope in the world. Accomplishments summarized for the 1986--1990 period include: Quantitative measurements of noble metal distributions in alumina monoliths; Direct elemental imaging of small metal particles poisoned by sulfur: Analysis of surface species on Co/La/alumina catalyst; and Development of analytical electron microscopy methods. Accomplishments for the 1991--1993 period include: Catalytic testing facility for the electron microscopy lab; New scheme for immobilization of surface species for AEM analysis; and New method for electron probe microanalysis of porous materials. Accomplishments for the 1994--1998 period were: successful low-temperature …

APT Blanket Detailed Bin Model Based on Initial Plate-Type Design -3D FLOWTRAN-TF Model

This report provides background information for a series of reports documenting accident scenario simulations for the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) blanket heat removal systems. The simulations were performed in support of the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report for the APT. This report gives a brief description of the FLOWTRAN-TF code which was used for detailed blanket bin modeling.

APT Blanket Safety Analysis: Preliminary Analyses of Downflow Through a Lateral Row 1 Blanket Model Under Near RHR Conditions (open access)

APT Blanket Safety Analysis: Preliminary Analyses of Downflow Through a Lateral Row 1 Blanket Model Under Near RHR Conditions

To address a concern about a potential maldistribution of coolant flow through an APT blanket module under low flow near RHR conditions, a scoping study of downflow mixed convection in parallel channels was conducted. Buoyancy will adversely effect the flow distribution in module bins with downflow and non-uniform power distributions. This study consists of two parts: a simple analytical model of flow in a two channel network, and a lumped eleven channel FLOWTRAN-TF model of a front lateral Row-1 blanket module bin. Results from both models indicate that the concern about coolant flow in a vertical model being diverted away from high power regions by buoyancy is warranted. The FLOWTRAN-TF model predicted upflow (i.e., a flow reversal) through several of the high power channels, under some low flow conditions. The transition from the regime with downflow in all channels to a regime with upflow in some channels was abrupt.
