A Helical Magnet Design for RHIC

Helical dipole magnets are required in a project for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to control and preserve the beam polarization in order to allow the collision of polarized proton beams. Specifications are for low current superconducting magnets with a 100 mm coil aperture and a 4 Tesla field in which the field rotates 360 degrees over a distance of 2.4 meters. A magnet meeting the requirements has been developed that uses a small diameter cable wound into helical grooves machined into a thick-walled aluminum cylinder.

Investigation and deactivation of B Plant HEPA filters

This paper describes the integrated approach used to manage environmental, safety, and health considerations related to the B Plant canyon exhaust air filters at the US Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Site. The narrative illustrates the development and implementation of integrated safety management as applied to a facility and its systems undergoing deactivation. During their lifetime, the high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters prevented the release of significant quantities of radioactive materials into the air. As the material in B Plant AVESF accumulated on the filters, it created an unusual situation. Over long periods of time, the radiation dose from the filter loading, combined with aging and chemical exposure actually degrade those filters which were intended to protect against any release to the environment.

In September 1996, the seal tube at the 3CL window of the Interim Examination and Maintenance (IEM) Cell at the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) failed. Replacement of the seal tube required removing the 3CL master slave manipulator (MSM) and shielding creating a streaming path for radiation from irradiated fuel and activated hardware in the IEM Cell. As a part of the preparation for the seal tube replacement, expected dose rates in the IEM Cell gallery outside the open 3CL penetration during the repair work were evaluated.

The Tank Characterization Data Management (TCDM) system provides customers and users with data and information of known and acceptable quality when they are needed, in the form they are needed, and at a reasonable cost. REPOSITORY RADIATION SHIELDING DESIGN GUIDE

The scope of this document includes radiation safety considerations used in the design of facilities for the Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Project (YMP). The purpose of the Repository Radiation Shielding Design Guide is to document the approach used in the radiological design of the Mined Geologic Disposal System (MGDS) surface and subsurface facilities for the protection of workers, the public, and the environment. This document is intended to ensure that a common methodology is used by all groups that may be involved with Radiological Design. This document will also assist in ensuring the long term survivability of the information basis used for radiological safety design and will assist in satisfying the documentation requirements of the licensing body, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). This design guide provides referenceable information that is current and maintained under the YMP Quality Assurance (QA) Program. Furthermore, this approach is consistent with maintaining continuity in spite of a changing design environment. This approach also serves to ensure common inter-disciplinary interpretation and application of data.

Picosecond-Resolution "Slice" Emittance Measurement of Electron-Bunches.

The Slice Emittance diagnostic is applicable to particle bunches in a linac that are of the order of a few degrees of phase long. In this technique, the transverse phase space of a longitudinal slice about one degree long is measured. The Slice Emittance diagnostic has been demonstrated on an electron bunch produced by a laser-photocathode RF gun. We measured the transverse beam matrix of one picosecond slices out of a 10 picosecond long bunch (about 10 degrees at the RF frequency of 2856 MHz). To implement this diagnostic one needs a phase shifter on part of the linac, a momentum analyzer (a dipole magnet followed by a slit) and a transverse emittance measuring system following the analyzer. By dephasing the last section (or sections) of the linac, longitudinal position in the bunch is correlated with energy. The momentum analyzer selects a short longitudinal slice by discriminating on energy and the transverse phase space of this slice is measured downstream of the analyzer. The Slice Emittance diagnostic, particularly in conjunction with tomographic analysis of the transverse phase space of the slices, provides significant new information about the 6-D phase space distribution of the beam. Stress Analysis of the D-Zero Solenoid Magnet Lifting Fixture PPD Fixture #102

This engineering note presents stress analysis calculations for the below the hook lifting fixture which will be used to move the D-Zero solenoid magnet during installation work at the D-Zero Assembly building. Load bearing structural members are shown to have a minimum design factor of 3 based on yield strength as required by ASME B30.20. All bolts were analyzed and shown to be kept below allowable loads/stresses listed in the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) manual. The lifting fixture will be manufactured at Fermilab using some material scavenged from an existing lifting fixture that was shipped with the magnet from the magnet manufacturer, Toshiba Corporation. The fixture is designed with built in versatility so that the solenoid magnet can be maneuvered through the stages of preparation and installation into it's final mounted position. The structure has been analyzed for all phases of its use, although the analysis of the structure as a below the hook lifting device is the main purpose of this note.

D0 Silicon Upgrade: D-Zero Assembly Hall ODH Analysis

The ODH analysis presented here covers the high bay and assembly hall docking area of the for the D-Zero detector. It includes the STand Alone helium Refrigerator (STAR) in the building. It also includes the D-Zero detector and it's associated cryogenic and gas systems. An ODH analysis is presented which shows that the D-Zero assembly building high bay including the detector docking area is ODH class O. Probabilities, leak rates, and fatality factors are generated for all items that are sources of inert gas. The scope of analysis included the calorimeter and gas components on the detector, the helium refrigerator/liquifier components, and the future solenoid and visible light photon counter cryogenics that will be added to the D-Zero detector. The analysis demonstrates that the calorimeter and helium refrigerator systems pose no ODH hazard to personnel.

Problems at the interface between heavy flavor physics, QCD and hadron spectroscopy.

The following subjects are discussed in this report: (1) Pentaquark--why it is important and how new technologies (vertex detectors) suggest drastically different approaches form the search used by Ashery et al.; (2) problems in B decays with implications for heavy quark decays to excited light quark states like the Al; (3) problems in B and D decays to final states including {eta} and {eta}{prime} indicating that standard quark mixing might not hold; (4) possible contributions of hybrid quarkonium states to B decays; (5) heavy flavor decays to {omega}{tau} which disagree with conventional expectations; and (6) possible new spin effects in {Lambda}{sub b} decay and the effect on the lifetime difference between the {Lambda}{sub b} and B mesons.

The implications of hadron spectroscopy are generally overlooked both by experimenters presenting results and theorists making predictions. Two examples are (1) possible effects of nodes in wave functions of final state mesons produced in B decay; (2) dependence of predictions for B decays into final states containing {eta} or {eta}{prime} on models and mixing angles for these states.

Correct implementation of the Argonne Expedited Site Characterization (ESC) process for preremedial site investigations.

The Argonne Expedited Site Characterization (ANL ESC) methodology, developed by Argonne National Laboratory and popularly known as ESC, is an effective, cost- and time-saving approach for technically successful preremedial site characterizations. The major objective of the ANL ESC is to determine whether a site containing contamination requires remediation. The methodology is equivalent to a CERCLA RI/FS or a RCRA RFI/CMS investigation. The ANL ESC methodology is an interactive, integrated process emphasizing the use of existing data, multiple complementary characterization methods, and on-site decision making to optimize site investigations. The ANL ESC is the basis for the expedited site characterization standard of the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials). The methodology has been registered under the service mark QuickSite{trademark} to offer both clients and providers a mechanism for ensuring that they receive the ANL ESC methodology developed by Argonne. The ANL ESC is a flexible process and is neither site nor contaminant dependent. It can be tailored to fit the unique characteristics that distinguish one site from the next, in contrast to the traditional approach of making all sites conform to the same rigid, inflexible investigation regimen. Comparing modeled isoprene with aircraft-based measurements in the atmospheric boundary layer.

Nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) are involved in a complex series of reactions that regulate the levels of oxidants in the troposphere. Isoprene (C{sub 5}H{sub 8}), the primary NMHC emitted from deciduous trees, is one of the most important reactive hydrocarbons in the troposphere. The amount of isoprene entering the free troposphere is regulated by the compound's rate of emission from leaves and by chemical and physical processes in the forest canopy and the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). This study uses a coupled canopy-ABL model to simulate these complex processes and compares calculated isoprene concentration profiles with those measured during aircraft flights above a forested region in the northeastern US. Land use information is coupled with satellite remote sensing data to describe spatial changes in canopy density during the field measurements. The high-resolution transport-chemistry model of Gao et al. (1993) for the ABL and the forest canopy layer is used to simulate vertical changes in isoprene concentration due to turbulent mixing and chemical reactions. The one-dimensional (1-D) ABL model includes detailed radiation transfer, turbulent diffusion, biogenic emissions, dry deposition, and chemical processes within the forest canopy and the ABL. Visibility assessment : coping with incomplete emissions and modeling.

The availability of complete emissions and entrainment data, topographic data and statistical meteorology data, and the modeling to account for all aerosol constituents presently found in our atmospheres, is not likely to improve substantially in the foreseeable future. This inability to model all of the transformation and transport processes which result in visibility-impairing aerosol species arriving at a point of interest, does not necessarily prevent our assessment of the benefits of reducing emissions from sources that can be modeled. We must, however, have an adequate statistical record of the concentrations of these materials and we must have a reliable means to apportion the concentration into controllable (i.e., those we can quantify and model) and uncontrollable fractions. Statistical concentration data, for remote scenic regions, are available for relevant aerosol species from the IMPROVE Network, for years beginning in 1988. A comparable network is unfortunately not available for urban areas. Here we describe the evolution of our source apportionment assumptions for two remote sites of much current interest, Grand Canyon and Shenandoah National Parks. Ingenuity and in some cases additional field investigations are necessary to improve such apportionment assumptions. Visibility assessment : Monte Carlo characterization of temporal variability.

Current techniques for assessing the benefits of certain anthropogenic emission reductions are largely influenced by limitations in emissions data and atmospheric modeling capability and by the highly variant nature of meteorology. These data and modeling limitations are likely to continue for the foreseeable future, during which time important strategic decisions need to be made. Statistical atmospheric quality data and apportionment techniques are used in Monte-Carlo models to offset serious shortfalls in emissions, entrainment, topography, statistical meteorology data and atmospheric modeling. This paper describes the evolution of Department of Energy (DOE) Monte-Carlo based assessment models and the development of statistical inputs. A companion paper describes techniques which are used to develop the apportionment factors used in the assessment models.

HOUDINI: RECONFIGURABEL IN-TANK ROBOT

This report details the development of a reconfigurable in-tank robotic cleanup systems called Houdini{trademark}. Driven by the general need to develop equipment for the removal of radioactive waste from hundreds of DOE waste storage tanks and the specific needs of DOE sites such as Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Fernald, Houdini{trademark} represents one of the possible tools that can be used to mobilize and retrieve this waste material for complete remediation. Houdini{trademark} is a hydraulically powered, track driven, mobile work vehicle with a collapsible frame designed to enter underground or above ground waste tanks through existing 24 inch riser openings. After the vehicle has entered the waste tank, it unfolds and lands on the waste surface or tank floor to become a remotely operated mini-bulldozer. Houdini{trademark} utilizes a vehicle mounted plow blade and 6-DOF manipulator to mobile waste and carry other tooling such as sluicing pumps, excavation buckets, and hydraulic shears. The complete Houdini{trademark} system consists of the tracked vehicle and other support equipment (e.g., control console, deployment system, hydraulic power supply, and controller) necessary to deploy and remotely operate this system at any DOE site. Change in Field Harmonics After Quench and Thermal Cycles in Superconducting Magnets

A change in field harmonics after quench and thermal cycles has been observed in superconducting magnets for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). This paper presents the results of a systematic investigation of this effect in a number of RHIC dipole and quadrupole magnets. These changes in field harmonics may limit the ultimate field quality and its reproducibility in superconducting magnets. A change in pre-stress has also been observed after quench and thermal cycles. A possible link between these two changes is explored.
