Effect of improving the lattice gauge action on QCD topology (open access)

Effect of improving the lattice gauge action on QCD topology

We use lattice topology as a laboratory to-compare the Wilson action (WA) with the Symanzik-Weisz (SW) action constructed from a combination of (1 x 1) and (1 x 2) Wilson loops, and the estimate of the renormalization trajectory (RT)[1] from a renormalization group transformation (RGT) which also includes higher representations of the (1 x 1) loop. Topological charges are computed using the geometric (Luscher`s) and plaquette methods on the uncooled lattice, and also by using cooling to remove ultraviolet artifacts. We show that as the action improves by approaching the RT, the topological charges for individual configurations, computed using these three methods become more highly correlated, suggesting that artificial lattice renormalizations to the topological susceptibility can be suppressed by improving the action.

Reduction of inherent mercury emissions in PC combustion. Semi-annual technical progress report No. 2, January 1, 1996--June 30, 1996 (open access)

Reduction of inherent mercury emissions in PC combustion. Semi-annual technical progress report No. 2, January 1, 1996--June 30, 1996

The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments handed the utility industry a major challenge for the coming years. The legislation requires that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency set emission standards for the 189 compounds or compound families identified in the act as air toxics. Evaluations by EPRI have identified 37 of these species as concerns in power generation. This research focuses on the air pollution control of mercury and rate limiting steps in mercury capture.

National Ignition Facility subsystem design requirements NIF site improvements SSDR 1.2.1 (open access)

National Ignition Facility subsystem design requirements NIF site improvements SSDR 1.2.1

This Subsystem Design Requirements (SSDR) document establishes the performance, design, and verification requirements associated with the NIF Project Site at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) at Livermore, California. It identifies generic design conditions for all NIF Project facilities, including siting requirements associated with natural phenomena, and contains specific requirements for furnishing site-related infrastructure utilities and services to the NIF Project conventional facilities and experimental hardware systems. Three candidate sites were identified as potential locations for the NIF Project. However, LLNL has been identified by DOE as the preferred site because of closely related laser experimentation underway at LLNL, the ability to use existing interrelated infrastructure, and other reasons. Selection of a site other than LLNL will entail the acquisition of site improvements and infrastructure additional to those described in this document. This SSDR addresses only the improvements associated with the NIF Project site located at LLNL, including new work and relocation or demolition of existing facilities that interfere with the construction of new facilities. If the Record of Decision for the PEIS on Stockpile Stewardship and Management were to select another site, this SSDR would be revised to reflect the characteristics of the selected site. Other facilities and infrastructure needed …

National Ignition Facility subsystem design requirements laser {ampersand} target area building (LTAB) SSDR 1.2.2.1

This Subsystem Design Requirements (SSDR) document establishes the performance, design, and verification requirements for the conventional building systems and subsystems of the Laser and Target Area Building (LTAB), including those that house and support the operation of high-energy laser equipment and the operational flow of personnel and materials throughout the facility. This SSDR addresses the following subsystems associated with the LTAB: Building structural systems for the Target Bay, Switchyards, Diagnostic Building, Decontamination Area, Laser Bays, Capacitor Bays and Operations Support Area, and the necessary space associated with building-support equipment; Architectural building features associated with housing the space and with the operational cleanliness of the functional operation of the facilities; Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems for maintaining a clean and thermally stable ambient environment within the facilities; Plumbing systems that provide potable water and sanitary facilities for the occupants, plus stormwater drainage for transporting rainwater; Fire Protection systems that guard against fire damage to the facilities and their contents; Material handling systems for transporting personnel and heavy materials within the building areas; Mechanical process piping systems for liquids and gases that provide cooling and other service to experimental laser equipment and components; Electrical power and grounding systems that provide …

Audit of the Department of Energy`s user facilities (open access)

Audit of the Department of Energy`s user facilities

DOE has for years made certain designated research facilities available to universities, industry, and other research organizations. Due to technology transfer efforts and excess capacities, even more facilities, such as defense program facilities, are being made available to outside users. Today, DOE user facilities fall into one of three categories: designated user facilities, other user resources, and Technology Deployment Center/User Facilities. Objective of this audit was to determine whether user facility agreements were priced for full cost recovery, user facility agreement collections were properly deposited, and financial assistance provided to visiting researchers was allowable and reasonable. The audit found that DOE priced Technology Deployment Center/User Facility and designated user facility agreements in accordance with DOE policies. However, other user facility agreements were not always priced to ensure full cost recovery, and collections were not always properly deposited. At one designated user facility, visiting researchers were provided with financial and housing assistance that is questionable as being allowable.
