Calculations of slurry pump jet impingement loads
This paper presents a methodology to calculate the impingement load in the region of a submerged turbulent jet where a potential core exits and the jet is not fully developed. The profile of the jet flow velocities is represented by a piece-wise linear function which satisfies the conservation of momentum flux of the jet flow. The adequacy of the of the predicted jet expansion is further verified by considering the continuity of the jet flow from the region of potential core to the fully developed region. The jet impingement load can be calculated either as a direct impingement force or a drag force using the jet velocity field determined by the methodology presented.

Electric utility engineer`s FGD manual -- Volume 1: FGD process design. Final report
Part 1 of the Electric Utility Engineer`s Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) Manual emphasizes the chemical and physical processes that form the basis for design and operation of lime- and limestone-based FGD systems applied to coal- or oil-fired steam electric generating stations. The objectives of Part 1 are: to provide a description of the chemical and physical design basis for lime- and limestone-based wet FGD systems; to identify and discuss the various process design parameters and process options that must be considered in developing a specification for a new FGD system; and to provide utility engineers with process knowledge useful for operating and optimizing a lime- or limestone-based wet FGD system.

Electric utility engineer`s FGD manual -- Volume 2: Major mechanical equipment; FGD proposal evaluations; Use of FGDPRISM in FGD system modification, proposal, evaluation, and design; FGD system case study. Final report
Part 2 of this manual provides the electric utility engineer with detailed technical information on some of the major mechanical equipment used in the FGD system. The objectives of Part 2 are the following: to provide the electric utility engineer with information on equipment that may be unfamiliar to him, including ball mills, vacuum filters, and mist eliminators; and to identify the unique technique considerations imposed by an FGD system on more familiar electric utility equipment such as fans, gas dampers, piping, valves, and pumps. Part 3 provides an overview of the recommended procedures for evaluating proposals received from FGD system vendors. The objectives are to provide procedures for evaluating the technical aspects of proposals, and to provide procedures for determining the total costs of proposals considering both initial capital costs and annual operating and maintenance costs. The primary objective of Part 4 of this manual is to provide the utility engineer who has a special interest in the capabilities of FGDPRISM [Flue Gas Desulfurization PRocess Integration and Simulation Model] with more detailed discussions of its uses, requirements, and limitations. Part 5 is a case study in using this manual in the preparation of a purchase specification and in the …

Five-beam Fabry-Perot velocimeter
Velocimetry is useful in diagnosing many properties of high-explosive (HE) systems. The shock pressure of the detonation wave in HE is often measured by noting the velocity of an interface between the HE and a known material. Properties of the equation of state (EOS) of an explosive can be measured in a cylinder event using a combination of velocimetry and other diagnostics. Point-initiated explosions driving large plates give additional information regarding HE EOS. Hemispherical booster shots give quantitative data pertaining to booster performance. Velocimetry is used routinely to measure the performance of detonators. Velocimetry will be a particularly effective tool in cylinder shots, flat plate, and booster shots to determine the effects of aging on the EOS of explosive components in stockpile devices.

Fracture Toughness and Impact Properties of Laminated Metal Composites
Laminated metal composites consist of alternating metal (or metal matrix composite) layers bonded together. These materials can provide fracture toughness and impact properties superior to those of the component materials. These properties are a function of component material properties, laminate architecture (volume fraction, thickness) and interface properties. Properties are compared for seven lightweight materials.

In Situ Infrared Study of Catalytic Decomposition of NO: Semiannually Technical Progress Report, August 1, 1995--February 1, 1996
During the first semi-annual period of the project, NO adsorption, CO adsorption, NO temperature-programmed desorption and decomposition (TPD), and temperature programmed reaction (TPR) of NO-CO have been studied over 0.5% wt% Rh/SiO{sub 2} catalysts by a combined infrared and mass spectrometric technique. Infrared study reveals that the high wavenumber Rh-NO{sup {delta}{minus}} at 1723-1740 cm{sup {minus}1} is the dominant adsorbate during TPD and TPR with NO:CO=1:1. During TPR, CO reduces part of Rh surface resulting in the formation of the low wavenumber Rh-NO{sup {delta}{minus}} at 1634-1680 cm{sup {minus}1}. Increasing CO partial pressure (i) promotes the formation of Rh to Rh{sup 0} sites, producing linear CO, (ii) increases the selectivity to N{sub 2}O below the light-off temperature, (iii) raises the light-off temperature, and (iv) promotes the formation of Si-NCO and Rh-NCO. Comparison of results of the present study with those of previous studies on 4 wt% Rh/SiO{sub 2} shows that different dispersion of Rh crystallites on SiO{sub 2} support results in significant variation in chemisorptive and reactive properties of Rh metal for NO-CO reaction.
