Gamma irradiation test report of simulated grout specimens for gas generation/liquid advection (open access)

Gamma irradiation test report of simulated grout specimens for gas generation/liquid advection

This report presents the results from an irradiation test performed on four specimens of grout that were fabricated from synthetic Double Shell Slurry Feed (DSSF) liquid waste. The objective was to investigate the radiolytic generation of gases and the potential for advective rejection of waste liquids from the grout matrix and to provide experimental information for the validation of the C-Cubed calculated model. It has been demonstrated that a number of gases can be formed within the grout due to radiolytic decomposition of various chemical components that make up the grout. This observation leads to the conjecture that the potential exists for the rejection of a portion of the 60 vol% free liquid from the grout matrix driven by pressurization by these gases. It was found that, for the specimen geometries used in this test series, and for peak radiation dose accumulation rates on the order of 4 to 60 times of the initial rate expected in the grout vaults (300 Rads/hr), no liquid rejection was observed from 2% to 35% of the target exposure expected in the grout vaults (1E+08 Rads). When the irradiation rate exceeded the projected grout vault dose rate by a factor of 200 a small …

Thermal analysis of tank 241-SY-101 to support structural assessment

This report documents a thermal model of tank 241-SY-101 and the surrounding soil column that was used to predict tank temperatures resulting from heating of the annulus ventilation air. Transient results from the model were input to a structural model of the tank for evaluation of the annulus heat-up event.

Negative Binomial Rits to Multiplicity Distributions From Central Collisions of {sup 16}O + Cu at 14.6A GeV/c and Intermittency (open access)

Negative Binomial Rits to Multiplicity Distributions From Central Collisions of {sup 16}O + Cu at 14.6A GeV/c and Intermittency

An `intermittency` analysis of charged particle multiplicity data from the target multiplicy array (TMA) in central collisions of {sup 16}O+Cu at 14.6 A{times}GeV/c has been published by the AGS-E802 collaboration. The centrality cut was made using the Zero degree Calorimeter and requiring that the forward energy be less than one projectile nucleon (i.e. T{sub ZCAL} <13.6 GeV). In agreement with previous measurements, an apparent power-law growth of Normalized Factorial moments with decreasing pseudorapidity interval was observed in the range 1.0{ge}{delta}{eta}{ge}0.1. In the present work, multiplicity distributions in individual pseudorapidity bins are presented for the same data. These distributions are excellently fit by Negative Binomial Distributions (NBD) in all {delta}{eta} bins, allowing, for the first time, a systematic formulation of the subject of `intermittency` in terms of distributions, rather than moments. In agreement with all previous measurements of NBD fits to multiplicity distributions in hadron and lepton reactions, the k parameter of the NBD fit for central {sup 16}O+Cu collisions is found to exhibit an apparently linear increase with the {delta}{eta} interval, albeit with a much steeper slope than for the other reactions, and a non-zero intercept, k(0){ne}0. True intermittency, {xi}{yields}0, would occur if the intercept k(0){yields}0, which is not observed …

Modeling study of carbonate decomposition in LLNL`s 4TU pilot oil shale retort (open access)

Modeling study of carbonate decomposition in LLNL`s 4TU pilot oil shale retort

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory`s (LLNL) 4 tonne-per-day oil shale Pilot Retort (4TU-Pilot) has been modeled to study the degree of carbonate decomposition occurring in the process. The modeling uses a simplified version of the processes occurring in the retort to allow parametric studies to be performed. The primary focus of the work is on the sensitivity of computed carbonate decomposition to the assumed manner in which solid material leaves the retort. It was found that for a variety of assumptions about solid passage and evolution within the process the computed carbonate decomposition varied by only a few percent. It was also determined that using available kinetic expressions based on literature data led to a consistent underestimate of the carbonate decomposition, from 12--17% low on an absolute basis and on a relative basis as much as a factor of seven times too low. A simplified kinetic expression based on limited data from laboratory experiments on the same shale as used in the 4TU-Pilot run was also employed and found to match the pilot results fairly well.

ABC Technology Development Program (open access)

ABC Technology Development Program

The Accelerator-Based Conversion (ABC) facility will be designed to accomplish the following mission: `Provide a weapon`s grade plutonium disposition capability in a safe, economical, and environmentally sound manner on a prudent schedule for [50] tons of weapon`s grade plutonium to be disposed on in [20] years.` This mission is supported by four major objectives: provide a reliable plutonium disposition capability within the next [15] years; provide a level of safety and of safety assurance that meets or exceeds that afforded to the public by modern commercial nuclear power plants; meet or exceed all applicable federal, state, and local regulations or standards for environmental compliance; manage the program in a cost effective manner. The ABC Technology Development Program defines the technology development activities that are required to accomplish this mission. The technology development tasks are related to the following topics: blanket system; vessel systems; reactivity control systems; heat transport system components; energy conversion systems; shutdown heat transport systems components; auxiliary systems; technology demonstrations - large scale experiments.
