Subcontracting strategy for the decontamination and decommissioning of Savannah River Site`s First Tritium Extraction Facility, 232-F

The Savannah River Site (SRS) has been actively proceeding with the decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) of various facilities and structures which were instrumental in the success of past missions at the site. The most ambitious of these efforts involves the subcontracting of the complete D&D of the first SRS Tritium Extraction Facility, identified as building 232-F. This facility operated in the mid 1950`s and discontinued operations permanently in 1958. The approach utilized for this effort attempts to invoke the novel principle of {open_quotes}As Commercial As Reasonably Achievable{close_quotes} or {open_quotes}ACARA{close_quotes}. This concept of ACARA applies only the minimum essential requirements necessary to successfully perform the D&D task. Integral to this approach is the subcontractor provision for maximum flexibility in the identification of and adherence to the requirements of applicable DOE Orders, federal, state and local laws and regulations, as well as site specific procedures without violating the site contractual requirements. The technical specification prepared for this effort provides the basis for a competitively bid contract to perform the entire D&D evolution, including initial facility characterization, waste stream characterization and certification, D&D and waste disposal. Collisions of highly charged ions with electrons, atoms and surfaces

At the Oak Ridge Multicharged Ion Source Facility, an experimental atomic collisions physics program is centered around a recently upgraded Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) multicharged ion source. The 10 GHz CAPRICE source has been in operation since October 22, 1992, and has provided more intense, higher charge ion beams than our previous ECR ion source. Intense metallic beams have recently become available with the installation of a metallic oven on the source. In addition to measurements of electron-impact excitation, carried out in collaboration with the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA), experiments are presently on-line to study electron-impact ionization, low-energy ion-atom collisions, and ion-surface interactions. A brief summary of our various activities with an emphasis on the new capabilities is presented.

Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator Package O-Ring Seal Material Validation Testing

The Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator Package O-Ring Seal Material Validation Test was conducted to validate the use of the Butyl material as a primary seal throughout the required temperature range. Three tests were performed at (1) 233 K ({minus}40 {degrees}F), (2) a specified operating temperature, and (3) 244 K ({minus}20 {degrees}F) before returning to room temperature. Helium leak tests were performed at each test point to determine seal performance. The two major test objectives were to establish that butyl rubber material would maintain its integrity under various conditions and within specified parameters and to evaluate changes in material properties.

Gyrokinetic and global fluid simulations of tokamak microturbulence and transport

Results are presented from the first systematic nonlinear kinetic simulation study of the swings and parameter dependences of toroidal ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) turbulence and transport, and from the first such study that includes sheared toroidal flows. Key results include the observation of clear gyroBohm scaling of the turbulent transport and of a surprisingly weak dependence of the transport on toroidal flow shear. Based on the simulation results, a parameterization of the transport is given that includes the dependence on all of the relevant physical parameters. The transition from local to nonlocal transport as a function of the profile scale length has been investigated using two-dimensional global fluid simulations of dissipative drift-wave turbulence. Local gyroBohm scaling is observed, except at very short profile scale lengths.

CP violation tests for top/tau processes (open access)

CP violation tests for top/tau processes

This paper reviews the following topics: Tests for CP violation in top-quark production and decay processes. In particular, m{sub t} = 174 {plus_minus} 17GeV implies good top-quark polarimetry because the W bosons in t-quark decays must be predominantly longitudinally polarized ({Gamma}{sub L}/{Gamma}{sub T} = 2.4). Tests for CP violation in tau lepton decays by the {tau} {yields} {rho}{nu} decay mode by usage of {rho} polarimetry signatures. Tests for complete measurement of the Z{sup o},{gamma}* {yields} {tau}{sup {minus}}{tau} {sup +} vertex, including tests for CP violation in tau production processes.

Stochastic approaches to dynamics of heavy ion collisions, the case of thermal fission

In order to study the influence of fluctuations on various phenomena linked to heavy ion collisions, a Langevin equation has been derived from a microscopic model. Parameters entering this equation are completely determined from microscopic quantities characterizing nuclear matter. This equation has been applied to various phenomena at intermediate energies. This paper focuses on large amplitude motions and especially thermal fission. Fission rate is calculated and compared to experimental results.
