Oral History Interview with C. M. Hudspeth, May 3, 1993
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with C M Hudspeth. When the war started, Hudspeth was in law school at the University of Texas. In early 1942, he applied for and was given a commission as ensign in the Navy without receiving any training. His first assignment was in a coding room at the Eight Naval District Headquarters in New Orleans. In early 1943, Hudspeth was transferred to Noumea to the South Pacific Area command as a communications officer. In early 1945, he transferred to San Diego. Hudspeth shares several anecdotes about the nature of his code work during the war and describes how coding machines worked. Hudspeth also shares a story about his involvement in the mission to shoot down Admiral Yamamoto. He was discharge in late 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Marion E Carl. Carl joined the Marine Corps in 1938. He served as a flight instructor for a fighter squadron in Quantico, Virginia. In September 1941 he joined Marine fighter squadron VMF-221 in San Diego, flying Brewster Buffalos. In November they went to Hawaii. On 8 December 1941 they went to Midway. In June of 1942 he flew a Wildcat in the Battle of Midway and provides details of this experience. From there he was evacuated back to Hawaii in mid-June and transferred to squadron VMF-223. In August of 1942 they went to Guadalcanal. He describes getting shot down by a zero and other experiences on the island. In early 1943 he was assigned as squadron commander over VMF-223 in Laguna Beach, California. They traveled to the Solomon Islands and Emira Island. From 1945-1948 Carl received orders to go to Patuxent Naval Air Station in Maryland, working in the flight test unit, testing new fighters and attack aircraft. Oral History Interview with Zenji Abe, May 4, 1993
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Zenji Abe. Zenji was born in Honshu on 18 August 1916 and graduated from the Japanese Naval Academy in March 1937. He received a year of training on various combat vessels as a midshipman. In March 1938 he was promoted to ensign and assigned to the destroyer Uzuki. In August he was sent to flight school and became a dive bomber pilot. After serving aboard the Soryu, he was transferred to the Akagi as a squadron leader of Val dive bombers. He was a squadron leader in the second wave of dive bombers assigned to attack the American carriers at Pearl Harbor. Since the carriers were absent, his squadron attacked battleships instead. His next combat action was bombing Darwin, Australia in February 1942. He also recalls sinking British heavy cruisers HMS Dorsetshire and HMS Cornwall, as well as the carrier HMS Hermes, in the Indian Ocean in April 1942. Flying from the Junyo in June, he attacked Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians. He transferred next to the carrier Hiyo. Oral History Interview with Rogers Aston, May 4, 1993
The National Museum of the pacific War presents an interview with Rogers Aston. Aston joined the Navy in July 1942 and was assigned to USS LST-446 as a gunnery officer. They delivered trucks to Guadalcanal on his first cruise. He recalls a time USS LST-446 came alongside the USS Kanawah (AO-01) to help fight its fires after it was hit. Aston relates several anecdotes about operating an LST in the Solomon Islands. He recalls meeting Admiral Nimitz one day at Pearl Harbor. He also remembers hauling Japanese prisoners of war in the Solomons. When the war ended, Aston elected to be discharged.

Oral History Interview with Geoffrey Fisken, May 1, 1993
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Geoffrey Fisken. Fisken joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1939 and by 1941 was in a fighter squadron at Singapore flying Brewster Buffaloes. Fisken recalls the Japanese arrival on the Malay Peninsula and defending the Allied base at Singapore against superior Japanese air forces. He eventually evacuated to Australia, and then returned to New Zealand by April, 1942. In 1943, his new squadron moved up to Guadalcanal. Fisken shares several anecdotes about his time flying combat and patrol missions. In late 1943, Fisken was declared unfit for flying (as a result of previous wounds) and was mustered out of the service. He returned to New Zealand and continued farming.

Oral History Interview with Richard Salter, May 1, 1993
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Richard Salter. Salter was born 27 February 1917. After graduating from high school, he attended Texas A&M University. He participated in the Civilian Pilot Training Program while at A&M and received his pilot’s license. Upon enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1940, he was sent to Santa Maria, California to primary flying school, then to basic flight school at Moffett Field. He completed advanced training at Stockton, California, receiving his commission 15 March 1941. He mentions the various planes flown in each phase of training. After graduation he reported to the 73rd Bomb Squadron at Elmendorf Field, Anchorage, Alaska and began flying B-18 bombers. In early 1942 the B-18s were replaced with B-26 bombers. Salter discusses characteristics of the B-26 that contributed to early crashes leading to the nickname Widowmaker for the B-26. He moved three of the squadrons planes to Adak and discusses bombing missions against Japanese shipping. Salter recalls being wounded by flak and losing his navigator to wounds. After two months in the hospital, Salter returned to Adak in February 1943 and assumed command of the 77th Bomb Group, which had B-25s. During July …

Oral History Interview with Michael Ryan, May 2, 1993
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Michael Ryan. Ryan joined the Marine Corps in 1940. He went to Iceland and served as a platoon commander. Afterwards, he describes going ashore at Tarawa as a company commander. Once ashore, due to the disarray, Ryan assumed command, until he could confirm that an officer from battalion or regimental headquarters had arrived. Ryan also went to Saipan and Tinian. He later served in Korea as an assistant division commander and as the First Marine Division commander in Vietnam.

Oral History Interview with Lyle Specht, May 3, 1993
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Lyle Specht. Specht signed up for the Marine Corps in the Spring of 1941, while attending Oregon State College. He graduated from the candidate’s class. He was sent to a recruit depot in San Diego on an 81mm mortar platoon in a weapons company. In the Fall of 1942 he joined the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines. They traveled to New Zealand and he provide some detail of their travels there and of the New Zealanders. From there they traveled to Guadalcanal, relieving the 8th Marines. Specht vividly describes his experiences securing this island. They traveled to Hawaii, where they reorganized the battalion and did away with the weapons company and assigned the machine gun platoons to the various infantry companies. He traveled to Okinawa with four Army divisions and 3 Marine divisions and describes his experiences through the Battle of Okinawa and being on Sugarloaf Hill.

Oral History Interview with Baine Kerr, May 4, 1993
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Baine Kerr. Kerr was born in Rusk, Texas on 24 August 1919 and entered law school upon graduation from the University of Texas in March 1939. While in law school, he joined the Marine Corps Reserve. In April 1942 he was called to active duty and attended officer training at Quantico, Virginia. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines located at Camp Elliott. He recalls several anecdotes concerning his time in New Zealand. In December 1942 his regiment arrived on Guadalcanal. His regiment moved across the island to clear out the remaining Japanese. Kerr was shot in the leg in an ambush and was evacuated to a field hospital in Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides. Next he was transferred to a hospital in Auckland, New Zealand and contracted malaria, which extended his stay for three months. Upon release, Kerr remained in New Zealand serving as the executive officer of a company conducting amphibious training with rubber boats.
