Cloudscape

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Ann Scarlett Harris' Cloudscape. As the composer writes on this piece: The summer of 1993 was a particularly stormy one in our part of the world. As I set in the studio, manipulating sounds and seeking inspiration, I noticed how the clouds had many different textures, and were interlaid to form a cloudscape whose morphology was constantly changing. As different layers of cloud moved at varying rates, new textures would be revealed. This work is my interpretation of this multilayering effect. Using pitches and rich timbres, layers of material progress concurrently, and are interrupted by sudden gestures and attacks which cut material away to reveal new timbres underneath.

Chiusi nel sogno

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Diego Dall'Osto's Chiusi nel sogno. The composer writes about this piece as such: These five fragments, essential marks of inner activity, are interpreted and fixed in some of the infinite possible proposals within the ephemeral and utopic musical space. They are divining signs of sounds/sense, participating and singing in an invincible conflict, between understandable shape and an uncontrollable flux. "Chiusi nel sogno intatto di uscirne, chissà come, immuni..." ("Closed in the untouched dream of leaving it, somehow, immune"), a dream like a daily illusion and like useless hope to come out unharmed, safe from the illusion myself. The musical fluency has, then, in the sequence of time a dizzy fugacity and listening will be then the most careful way to get the nuance, sonority, relationships, enigmas, resonances, dizziness and significance.

Cartas desde el Real Hospital de Lunaticos.

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Daniel Amadeo Zimbaldo's Cartas desde el Real Hospital de Lunáticos. Work for soprano, flute, violin, violoncello, piano, percussion, and tape. Based on the book "Mrs. Caldwell habla con su hijo" by Camilo José Cela, the work tells the story of a mother who writes letters evoking her own dead son with particular lyricism. This evocation generates rhythms of tension and rest. The dissociation of reality is symbolized by the different timbres of the acoustic instruments; the predominance of an inner life given to fantasy is expressed by the electroacoustic material.

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Josefina Puncele De Benedetti's La muerte del Delfin. Suspended choirs

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Ragnar Grippe's Suspended choirs. The material is described by the composer as somewhat eclectic, with a deviation from a "pure" electro-acoustic sense, instead including several influences from many different styles. The compositional work started after some two months of programming of real-time control devices controlling filtering, reverb, chorus and pan functions. The resulting sounds were then used for the composition. The name of this piece is derived from the "gliding" choir-sounds, creating the illusion that these sounds are suspended. This piece is considered part of a triptych by the composer, alongside Grippe's compositions L'arbre égayé (1992) and Poemes d’un avenir passé (1990).

Hake

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Armeno Alberts' Hake. The title refers to singing in traditional Javanese music, meaning a cry of joy. The work was entirely composed on the UPIC system, exploiting in particular the possibilities of tuning with the frequency tables. I also used frequency modulation to give an "orchestral" aspect to the sound. Many waveforms were taken from samples of gamelan orchestra instruments. The tape can be played alone or with a score for four gamelan instrumentalists.

Quadro

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Alessandro Cipriani's Quadro. The word "Quadro" also means "picture" in Italian. It focuses particularly on the transitions from harmonic to inharmonic and vice versa. The tape was created with real-time (PODX) and granular synthesis.

Recording of Warren Burt's Piano sounds improvisation. This work is the third movement of "Three More Improvisations", for Buchla lighning, movement-to-MIDI converter, and computer sampling programs. Cello & Co

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Frank Pecquet's Cello & Co. Tihs work is for flute, horn, cello, piano, and electronics. Instrumental writing was done with the help of PatchWork software and sound samples were processed on SVP and by Sim. The electronic sounds come exclusively from acoustic sounds with electronic processing. Real-time synthesis applied to the cello alone manifests the direct, almost spontaneous link between the sounds of delayed synthesis and the acoustic sounds, while the synthetic piano indicates an intermediate level between the processed sample and the instrumental sound. The real pianist creates a new alternation in instrumental playing and ranges.

To the last syllable (one)

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Joseph Hyde's To the last syllable (one). This work is for four voices and tape. This work is sonically dense; there's no way the listener can hear everything at the same time, so they are left to pick their own way through. The text is an amalgam of hundreds of sources, whilst the tape employs recognizable sounds to tell a story of its own. All these threads are interleaved and overlaid into a rich and complex narrative tapestry.

Embrassement

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Jean-Michel Rivet's Embrassement. This work is for electronics and manipulated pre-recorded sound. The composer wrote a poem, which is depicted by the acoustic environment: Snatching fire from the purple clouds, lightning shoots from the heights. In oblique, it crosses the sky dotting the countryside with light. Flames and torches crawl under the trees, on all sides there are only scarlet cracklings, tawny cracklings, silver stripes. Ever-changing reflections glow the horizon: It's the conflagration.
