The Delaney Clause: The Dilemma of Regulating Health Risk for Pesticide Residues (open access)

The Delaney Clause: The Dilemma of Regulating Health Risk for Pesticide Residues

Under the authority of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for establishing tolerances for pesticide residues in or on foods and feeds. Tolerances are legal limits to the amount of pesticide residues that can be found on a raw agricultural commodity at the farm gate or in a processed food. The FFDCA has two sections, 408 and 409, which set up different and inconsistent criteria for setting tolerances for pesticide residues in foods.

[Letter from Jan Keene Muhlert to Marla Price, November 9, 1992]

Photocopy of a letter from Jan Muhlert, director of the Amon Carter, to Marla Price, director of the Modern Art Museum. Inviting Price to join Muhlert as a member of the Advisory committee for the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts. Muhlert describes a moment where Price and Muhlert sat together in an introductory program on the Institute a year before. Muhlert hopes that Price will except her formal invitation to come to the meeting and that Institute members Jack Davis, Bill McCarter and Nancy Reynolds will report on the committee's activities during the last six months. Included in the letter to Price is a fact sheet on the Institute, not present with the letter. Copied on the letter are Bill McCarter and Jack Davis.

ARTI Refrigerant Database

The database provides bibliographic citations and abstracts for publications that may be useful in research and design of air- conditioning and refrigeration equipment. The database identifies sources of specific information on R-32, R-123, R-124, R-125, R-134, R-134a, R-141b, R-142b, R-143a, R-152a, R-245ca, R-290 (propane), R- 717 (ammonia), ethers, and others as well as azeotropic and zeotropic and zeotropic blends of these fluids. It addresses lubricants including alkylbenzene, polyalkylene glycol, ester, and other synthetics as well as mineral oils. It also references documents on compatibility of refrigerants and lubricants with metals, plastics, elastomers, motor insulation, and other materials used in refrigerant circuits. A computerized version is available that includes retrieval software.

Continuous-mixture kinetics of coal thermolysis in supercritical fluid (open access)

Continuous-mixture kinetics of coal thermolysis in supercritical fluid

The model developed builds on earlier models and introduces the following features: new rate expressions for both single-and two- fragment reactions; representation of initial coal composition by molecular weight distributions of chemical functional groups releasable from coal matrix by bond rupture; and applicability to semi-batch reactor. For the rate of coal depolymerization, two types of reactions are considered, one producing a single product species and the other producing two product species. A visualization of the reaction kinetics is presented.

Technical bases for precipitate hydrolysis process operating parameters

This report provides the experimental data and rationale in support of the operating parameters for tetraphenylborate precipitate hydrolysis specified in WSRC-RP-92-737. The report is divided into two sections, the first dealing with lab-scale precipitate hydrolysis experimentation while the second part addresses large-scale runs conducted to demonstrate the revised operating parameters in the Precipitate Hydrolysis Experimental Facility (PHEF). The program was in conjunction with reducing the nitrite ion level in DWPF feed.

The NHMFL 60 tesla, 100 millisecond pulsed magnet (open access)

The NHMFL 60 tesla, 100 millisecond pulsed magnet

Among the new facilities to be offered by the National Science Foundation through the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) are pulsed fields that can only be achieved at a national user facility by virtue of their strength, duration, and volume. In particular, a 44 mm bore pulsed magnet giving a 60 tesla field for 100 ms is in the final design stage. This magnet will be powered by a 1.4 GW motor-generator at Los Alamos and is an important step toward proving design principles that will be needed for the higher field quasi-stationary pulsed magnets that this power source is capable of driving. This report will discuss specifications and parameters of this magnet.

Multi-frame x-ray imaging with a large area 40ps camera

The authors have developed a large area short pulse framing camera that is capable of sixteen frames and shutter times of 40ps per frame. This is accomplished with a high fidelity electrical circuit and a L/D = 20 microchannel plate, driven by a short pulse (80ps) high amplitude electrical driver. They show results of this work they have done to support this type of shutter time and the difficulties associated with large area high speed shuttering.
