(Theory of relative biological effectiveness) (open access)

(Theory of relative biological effectiveness)

Research continued on relative biological effectiveness, in the following areas: radial distribution of dose about the path of an energetic heavy ion; the response of E. Coli mutants to ionizing radiations; the application of a fragmentation model to to the calculation of cell survival and mutation with heavy ion beams; biological radiation effects from gamma radiation and heavy ion beams on organisms; cancer induction in the Harderian Gland by HZE particles; and effects of low dose radiations. Improved methods to manufacture aluminum (open access)

Improved methods to manufacture aluminum

A low-temperature (750{degrees}C) process to produce aluminum, employing dimensionally-stable electrodes, was investigated under this contract. Tests were carried out at a 10-ampere scale to develop a nonconsumable anode and to evaluate certain cell operating parameters. The work was carried out in conjunction with a NSF SBIR research grant to study the fundamental science aspects of the process. A scaled up 300-ampere cell was built and a preliminary test run was made with encouraging results. The new technology has the promise of producing aluminum at 5.0 kWh/lb as compared to the US average of about 7.5 kWh/lb, and to produce it at lower cost. Preliminary technical discussions have been held with a major US aluminum company under secrecy agreement for eventual licensing.

Highly nucleophilic acetylide, vinyl, and vinylidene complexes (open access)

Highly nucleophilic acetylide, vinyl, and vinylidene complexes

The research was divided into the following: studies of nucleophilic and chiral acetylide complex [Cp(CO)(PPh[sub 3])Mn-C[triple bond]CR][sup [minus]]; nucleophilic addition of carbene anions to organic ligands on electrophilic complexes; halide-promoted carbonylation of imido ligands; binuclear Fe[sub 2] complexes with bridging organonitrogen ligands; addition and cycloaddition reactions of carbyne complex [Cp(CO)[sub 2]Re[triple bond]CTol][sup +]; addition and cycloaddition reactions of methylcarbyne complexes [Cp(CO)[sub 2]M[triple bond]CCH[sub 3]][sup +] and vinylidene complexes Cp(CO)[sub 2]M[double bond]C[double bond]CH[sub 2] (M=Mn, Re); studies of generation and reactivity of vinylcarbene complexes formed from reaction of manganese carbene anions and aldehydes; and addition of oxo ligands of nucleophilic oxo complexes to organic ligands on electrophilic metal centers.
