Isolation and Characterization of the Intracellular Granules from the Dental Follicle and Stellate Reticulum of Rat Molars (open access)

Isolation and Characterization of the Intracellular Granules from the Dental Follicle and Stellate Reticulum of Rat Molars

The purpose of this study was to isolate a relatively pure population of granules from the DF and SR of 7 day old rats and characterize them biochemically. If this could be accomplished, the next step was to determine if the granule proteins may play a role in tooth eruption.

Visual Works of Art as a Stimulus for Linguistic References and Historical Time Conceptions in Third Grade Students (open access)

Visual Works of Art as a Stimulus for Linguistic References and Historical Time Conceptions in Third Grade Students

This study investigated the relationship between visual cues in art reproductions, simple linguistic time vocabulary and children's temporal understandings. During interview sessions, 33 third-grade students attending two suburban schools were asked to place three art postcard reproductions sets in chronological order. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and coded for analysis. Linguistic references used to represent historical time and visual cues within the art postcards which caused students to place art works in a particular time sequence were documented.

Constellations is a single movement work that explores the color between acoustic instruments and computer generated sounds. It is scored for four flutes (two doubling on piccolos), two oboes, two bassoons, eight B-flat clarinets, two bass B-flat clarinets; two alto saxophones, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone; four trumpets in B-flat, four horns in F; three trombones, bass trombone; two tubas;piano; six percussionists; and contrabass. The duration of the work is nine minutes and twenty-eight seconds. Mapping of stellar constellations provide the primary material for all pitch and harmonic progressions throughout the work. Software synthesis and digital sampling techniques coalesce to produce the computer music on tape.

Hans Haacke: an Investigation of Four Site-Specific Works that Incorporate Painting as a Means of Revealing Interrelated Cultural, Economic, and Political Systems in Society, 1982-1984

Four site-specific works produced between 1982 and 1984 in which Hans Haacke utilized the traditional medium of oil on canvas were examined in conjunction with an overview of the underlying and interrelated principles and concepts that have guided his approach to art from 1958-1988.

High Resolution Fractionation, Characterization, and Studies of ADP-Ribose Polymers (open access)

High Resolution Fractionation, Characterization, and Studies of ADP-Ribose Polymers

A method for the high resolution fractionation of ADP-ribose polymers has been developed that allows isolation of highly purified polymers of defined size and branching fequency. The key features of the method are purification using dihydroxyboronyl-BioRex 70 and fractionation by anion exchange HPLC.

Inferences of Sexual Orientation and Gender Role Based on Clothing and Posture (open access)

Inferences of Sexual Orientation and Gender Role Based on Clothing and Posture

This study investigated the effect of clothing, posture, and sex of subject on inferences concerning sexual orientation and gender role. Subjects were a convenience sample of 327 students. The study wa sa 2 (masculine/feminine clothing) X 2 (masculine/feminine posture) X2 (sex of subject) between subject experimental design. Perceptions of sexual orientation were measured by a single item anchored at one end by homosexual and the other end by not homosexual.

The life and legend of Godfrey of Bouillon: the development of a cultural hero in art and literature (open access)

The life and legend of Godfrey of Bouillon: the development of a cultural hero in art and literature

In the fourteenth century Jacques de Longuyon popularized the theme of the nine worthies in his poem Les Voeux du Paon. Gofrey of Bouillon, Duke of Lower Lorraine and Protector of the Holy Sepulchre, was the last of the Christian Worthies in the poem. In his life and legends he exemplified the medieval world's heroic ideal. His achievement, the recovery of the Holy City for Christianity, was the pinnacle-the crowning glory-for the western world. By examining the historical fact of Godfrey's life and comparing it to legends and artistic renderings of that life, one can learn more about the time during which he lived and the people of which he was a part.

The Morphology of Azotobacter Vinelandii Grown in Dialyzed Soil Medium

This research describes the changes in cell morphology of Azotobacter vinelandii cells cultured in dialyzed soil medium. This particular culture medium was assumed to provide the bacteria with an environment similar to their natural habitat, the soil.

Screening of Steroids from Plants Using Saccharomyces Cerevisiae as a Host System

The reconstituted steroid transcription unit in Saccharomyces cerevisae was used to screen for steroids in cell extracts prepared from 24 species of plants representing 16 families. Extracts from 7 species representing 5 families were able to activate both estrogen and progesterone receptors expressed in yeast.

There are twelve theme categories. The melodic themes have differing levels of tonality. The formal structure is cyclically through-composed.

Creation and Characterization of an Escherichia Coli and Pseudomonas Putida Hybrid Aspartate Transcarbamoylase (open access)

Creation and Characterization of an Escherichia Coli and Pseudomonas Putida Hybrid Aspartate Transcarbamoylase

Aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase) is encoded by the pyrBI genes in E. coli. Expression of these genes is reduced four-fold by attenuation when grown on uracil. Using plasmid, pRO1727. the pyrB and the pyrBI genes from E. coli were cloned into a P. putida pyrB auxotroph. A recombinant pyrB gene was recovered that encoded a functional hybrid ATCase with a molecular weight of 470 kDa.

Evaluation of Immune Responses and Cytological Changes in Lumbricus Terrestris and Eisenia Foetida as Assays for Xenobiotics

The earthworms, Lubricus terrestris and Eisenia foetida, were used as non mammalian surrogate models to assess the immunotoxicpotential of xenobiotic to mammals. Assays were developed and optimized for detecting spreading activity and phagocytosis of rabbit red blood cell (RRBC), bacteria, and yeasts by macrophage-like coelomocytes of L. terrestris.
