Estimating the consequences of significant fracture flow at Yucca Mountain (open access)

Estimating the consequences of significant fracture flow at Yucca Mountain

A simple model is proposed for investigating the possibility of significant fracture flow at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The model allows an estimate of the number of flowing fractures at Yucca Mountain based on the size of the fractures and the yearly volume of infiltrating water. Given the number of flowing fractures, the number of waste containers they contact is estimated by a geometric argument. Preliminary results indicate that the larger the flowing fractures, the lower the releases of radionuclides. Also, even with significant fracture flow, releases could be well below the limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Fault stress analysis for the Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Project (open access)

Fault stress analysis for the Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Project

An understanding of the state of stress on faults is important for pre- and postclosure performance considerations for the potential high-level radioactive waste repository at Yucca Mountain. This paper presents the results of three-dimensional numerical analyses that provide estimates of the state of stress through time (10,000 years) along three major faults in the vicinity of the potential repository due to thermal stresses resulting from waste emplacement. It was found, that the safety factor for slip close to the potential repository increases with time after waste emplacement. Possible fault slip is predicted above and below the potential repository for certain loading conditions and times. In general, thermal loading reduces the potential for slip in the vicinity of the potential repository.

ITER edge-plasma conditions versus pump configuration (open access)

ITER edge-plasma conditions versus pump configuration

Two-dimensional fluid simulations of ITER double-null divertor scrape-off-layer plasma conditions have been restricted to examining a single outboard divertor plate with up/down symmetry assumed. The present work evaluates the effect of pumping at only one plate on particle flow patterns and other parameters of interest. Pumping only at one plate results in reduced sheath temperatures at both plates but an increased heat flux at the pumped plate. The physics assumptions for separatrix density (n{sub SEP}={l angle}n{r angle}/3.5) and for radial particle diffusivity (D=0.66m{sup 2}/s) used in the simulation of ITER edge plasma result in particle throughputs two orders of magnitude greater than that required for acceptable fusion-product ash removal rates. The particle confinement time, however, is an order of magnitude shorter than the transport energy confinement time, {tau}{sub E}. Plasmas (D=0.04m{sup 2}/s) which would have {tau}{sub p} {approximately} {tau}{sub E} are evaluated and found to have unacceptably high plasma temperatures and heat flux at the plate. Ash removal rates are still acceptable. A plasma recycle coefficient of R=0.965 reduces the particle throughput by a factor of 2.8 below the no-recycle case.

Measurement of Emittance of Beam in the Debuncher During Stacking (open access)

Measurement of Emittance of Beam in the Debuncher During Stacking

The emittance of antiprotons in the debuncher was measured using two methods during normal stacking conditions. With 2.3 seconds of cooling the vertical emittance was found to be 3.6 {pi} mm-mr using scraper D:TJ308, and 2.9 {pi} mm-mr using the profile on SEM806. With 6.9 seconds of cooling time time the measured horizontal emittance was 2.1 {pi} mm-mr using D:RJ306 v.s. 1.9 {pi} mm-mr using SEM806; but with 2.3 seconds of cooling the measured emittance in the debuncher was larger than in the DTOA line, 4.5 {pi} mm-mr v.s. 2.8 {pi} mm-mr. This suggests that some beam is being scraped on a horizontal aperture restriction someplace in the extraction process.

A multilevel preconditioner for domain decomposition boundary systems (open access)

A multilevel preconditioner for domain decomposition boundary systems

In this note, we consider multilevel preconditioning of the reduced boundary systems which arise in non-overlapping domain decomposition methods. It will be shown that the resulting preconditioned systems have condition numbers which be bounded in the case of multilevel spaces on the whole domain and grow at most proportional to the number of levels in the case of multilevel boundary spaces without multilevel extensions into the interior.
