A high-fluence fusion neutron source

A conceptual design of a D-T fusion facility for continuous production of 14-MeV neutron wall loading from 5 to 10 MW/m/sup 2/ at the plasma surface is presented. In this design, D-T neutrons are produced in a linear, two-component plasma formed by neutral beam irradiation of a fully ionized warm plasma target. The beam energy, which is deposited in the center, is transferred to the warm plasma mainly by electron drag and is conducted along the target plasma column to end regions where it is absorbed in neutral gas at high pressure. The target plasma is operated in a regime where electron thermal conduction along the column is the controlling energy-loss process. The loss rate is minimized by adjusting the diameter and length of the plasma column. A substantial gradient in T/sub e/ along the column results in recombination of the plasma to gas in the end-regions before impact on the end walls. The resultant hot gas is cooled by contact with large-area heat exchangers. In this way, the large steady-state heat load from the injected neutral beams is diffused and removed at tolerable heat flux levels. New filter efficiency test for future nuclear grade HEPA filters

We have developed a new test procedure for evaluating filter penetrations as low as 10/sup /minus/9/ at 0.1-..mu..m particle diameter. In comparison, the present US nuclear filter certification test has a lower penetration limit of 10/sup /minus/5/. Our new test procedure is unique not only in its much higher sensitivity, but also in avoiding the undesirable effect of clogging the filter. Our new test procedure consists of a two-step process: (1) We challenge the test filter with a very high concentration of heterodisperse aerosol for a short time while passing all or a significant portion of the filtered exhaust into an inflatable bag; (2) We then measure the aerosol concentration in the bag using a new laser particle counter sensitive to 0.07-..mu..m diameter. The ratio of particle concentration in the bag to the concentration challenging the filter gives the filter penetration as a function of particle diameter. The bad functions as a particle accumulator for subsequent analysis to minimize the filter exposure time. We have studied the particle losses in the bag over time and find that they are negligible when the measurements are taken within one hour. Report on application specific integrated circuits for relativistic heavy ion detectors

Detector systems for RHIC experiments are invariably going to be large and complex. Thus it behooves the planners to incorporate elements that have little need for adjustment, calibration and correction to the produced data. For example, if power, size and cost considerations permit, time can be digitized directly (i.e. with counters, shift registers, etc.) where no adjustments, calibrations or corrections are required. The circuit either works correctly or not at all. This kind of circuit behavior is extremely valuable in detectors with 10/sup 5/ or more channel elements. In analog to digital conversion applications, direct conversion (i.e. flash ADC) may be prohibitive in cost, size and power. Here major effort must be given to minimize the magnitude of offset and conversion gain variance. Where possible self correction and adjustment should be applied at the subsystem level.

There were three different tests involved in this series. It should be stated that the purpose of the test was to determine if there should be extra precautions taken with the calorimeter vent stack. No attempt was made to do quantitative measurements. The three types of tests were diffusion tests, spills at a remote site, and a spill at the MW building. Oxygen monitors used were the standard Energy Saver type throughout. 6 figs.

An experimental investigation of double beta decay of /sup 100/Mo

New limits on half-lives for several double beta decay modes of /sup 100/Mo were obtained with a novel experimental system which included thin source films interleaved with a coaxial array of windowless silicon detectors. Segmentation and timing information allowed backgrounds originating in the films to be studied in some detail. Dummy films containing /sup 96/Mo were used to assess remaining backgrounds. With 0.1 mole years of /sup 100/Mo data collected, the lower half-life limits at 90% confidence were 2.7 /times/ 10/sup 18/ years for decay via the two-neutrino mode, 5.2 /times/10/sup 19/ years for decay with the emission of a Majoron, and 1.6 /times/ 10/sup 20/ years and 2.2 /times/ 10/sup 21/ years for neutrinoless 0/sup +/ ..-->.. 2/sup +/ and 0/sup +/ ..-->.. 0/sup +/ transitions, respectively. 50 refs., 38 figs., 11 tabs.

The effect of age on the structural integrity of HEPA filters

All of the controls on high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters are based on rigid manufacturing standards with regard to filtration efficiency, temperature performance, pressure integrity, and strength. Third-party inspection and testing by the US Department of Energy increases the reliability of new HEPA filters, but only routine in-place testing is used to assure that an aging filter performs adequately. In 1980 the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory initiated a small evaluation to determine if age has a significant effect on the structural integrity of HEPA filters. A series of used uncontaminated filters dating back to 1965 was obtained for these tests. Tensile strength tests on the old media indicated a decrease in strength. To provide additional measurement of the filters' overall strength, several of these aged filters were subjected to pressure pulses equivalent to the NRC Region I tornado pulses and shock wave overpressures. Data from these tests indicate a decrease in breaking pressure of from 25/endash/50%. A large increase in complete filter pack blow-out during the simulated NRC Region I tornado tests was also observed. In this lecture the map from a cellular automaton to a sequence of analytical approximations called the local structure theory is described. Connections are drawn between cellular automata and neural network models. Investigation of the fire endurance of borated polyethylene shielding material

We conducted nine experiments to investigate the fire endurance of a borated polyethylene shielding material to be used in the Engineering Demonstration System. Several chemistry tests were also done. The shielding material was found to melt at 93.5/degree/C, decompose at 230/degree/C, and ignite at 350/degree/C. Five fire tests were done in a realistic configuration and four tests in a pessimistic configuration. The material easily passed all nine tests. In each case, the shielding material never reached ignition temperature and was found acceptable in this proposed application. 7 refs., 10 figs., 3 tabs.
