This engineering note describes a test fill of the 4-inch x 6-inch rotary bayonet test fixture with LN{sub 2}. This test verifies the operation of valves on the fixture, and checks for proper construction/insulation. Further cold testing is imminent (with rotation and moment loading of the bayonet) after proper construction is verified and the test fixture is accepted. While this test fixture is a pressure vessel (4-inch), it does not require special safety treatment because it is under 6-inch in diameter. Flow capacity calculations were done to insure that the relief valve chosen would be capable of handling fire/loss of vacuum conditions. The D-Zero Safety Committee Chairman was notified of this testing.

On April 26, 1986 the world's worst nuclear power plant accident occurred at the Unit 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station in the USSR. This paper presents a discussion of the design of the Chernobyl Power Plant, the sequence of events that led to the accident and the damage caused by the resulting explosion. The structural design features that contributed to the accident and resulting damage will be highlighted. Photographs and sketches obtained from various worldwide news agencies will be shown to try and gain a perspective of the extent of the damage. The aftermath, clean-up, and current situation will be discussed and the important lessons learned for the structural engineer will be presented. 15 refs., 10 figs.

This note summarizes a brief study on the leakage rates of cryolab valves due to the failure of the valve packings. The {Delta}r gap between the shaft and the packing, the fluid (Ar or N2), the {Delta}p (atm) between the fluid and atmosphere, and the initial temperature of the escaping gas were varied to determine the resulting leakage rate. The heat leak in watts required to vaporize the liquid which provides the indicated flow rates is also included in the results. The dimensions used in the calculations were acquired over the telephone and/or found on the enclosed drawing from Cryolab. There is no implication that Cryolab was any better or worse than other valve manufacturers. They were kind enough to provide the detail needed for this study. The fluid properties were found in Ar and N2 Property handbooks. The results of this study are shown graphically and listed on accompanying spread sheets. It has long been known that a precise measurement of the SLC beam trajectory through the IP region is vital both from a machine and a detector point of view. One of the primary techniques used to maximize luminosity is the measurement of the deflection angle of one beam produced by the electromagnetic interaction with the other beam. In order to implement this procedure a pair of precision Beam Position Monitors (BPMs) were installed within the Final Triplet of quadrapoles on each side of the IP. Before the IP BPMs could be used to measure beam-beam deflection, a series of measurements were made of the coefficients which relate the setting of an orbit correction magnet to the position of the beam at a particular BPM (R/sub 12/s). The purpose was to expose any problems such as misconnected cables, etc., by comparing the measured R/sub 12/s with theoretical predictions from the model of the Final Focus region. A technique developed that uses position measurements in the long BPMs to determine a three parameter fit to the beam trajectory at the IP. A fusion materials irradiation facility is required for the timely and cost-effective development of economical fusion power. Our conceptual machine provides sufficient neutron fluence for accelerated lifetime material tests in a time span of 1--2 y while producing less than 1 MW of fusion power. Neutral deuterium beams at 150 keV are injected into the center of a high-density warm tritium plasma housed in a 12-m-long cylindrical vessel. Superconducting magnets hold the plasma, which transfers the power to each end of the solenoid. The stainless steel end sections absorb the beam power and are externally cooled by high-pressure water to maintain the plasma-side wall temperature below 740 K. A service loop separates tritium from deuterium in the plasma effluent. Tritium is reinjected at each end. 9 refs., 2 figs., 2 tabs.
