Application of the Argonne Advanced Acceleration Test Facility to development for conventional accelerators

The Argonne Advanced Acceleration Test Facility is designed as a powerful tool to test ideas for very high gradient acceleration schemes based on direct beam excitation of plasmas, metal structures, dielectrics, etc. The characteristic size in these systems is )approximately) 1 cm, corresponding to frequencies )approximately) 10 GHz. The question addressed here is whether the special features of this facility have application as well to the development of components for the more conventional, lower frequency, accelerators now operating or under development. It is suggested that the usefulness of the facility for the development of conventional systems could be enhanced by a provision for longer time delay between driver and witness beam pulses. 9 refs., 2 figs.

Design of a microwave calorimeter for the microwave tokamak experiment

The initial design of a microwave calorimeter for the Microwave Tokamak Experiment is presented. The design is optimized to measure the refraction and absorption of millimeter rf microwaves as they traverse the toroidal plasma of the Alcator C tokamak. Techniques utilized can be adapted for use in measuring high intensity pulsed output from a microwave device in an environment of ultra high vacuum, intense fields of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and intense magnetic fields. 16 refs.

Experiment designs offered for discussion preliminary to an LLNL field scale validation experiment in the Yucca Mountain Exploratory Shaft Facility

It has been proposed (``Progress Report on Experiment Rationale for Validation of LLNL Models of Ground Water Behavior Near Nuclear Waste Canisters,`` Keller and Lowry, Dec. 7, 1988) that a heat generating spent fuel canister emplaced in unsaturated tuff, in a ventilated hole, will cause a net flux of water into the borehole during the heating cycle of the spent fuel. Accompanying this mass flux will be the formation of mineral deposits near the borehole wall as the water evaporates and leaves behind its dissolved solids. The net effect of this process upon the containment of radioactive wastes is a function of (1) where and how much solid material is deposited in the tuff matrix and cracks, and (2) the resultant effect on the medium flow characteristics. Experimental concepts described in this report are designed to quantify the magnitude and relative location of solid mineral deposit formation due to a heated and vented borehole environment. The most simple tests address matrix effects only; after the process is understood in the homogeneous matrix, fracture effects would be investigated. Three experiment concepts have been proposed. An experimental study of the SSC (Superconducting Super Collider) magnet aperture criterion

A beam dynamics experiment, performed in the Fermilab Tevatron, that was mainly motivated by planning for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) is described. Nonlinearities are introduced in the Tevatron by special sextupoles in order to stimulate the SSC environment. ''Smear'' is one of the parameters used to characterize the deviation from linear behavior. Smear is extracted from experimental data and compared with calculation over a wide range of conditions. The agreement is excellent. The closed orbit at injection trajectory reveal no deterioration even at the highest sextupole excitations. Measurements of the dynamic aperture are in general agreement with prediction. Particles captured on nonlinear resonance islands are directly observed and measurements are performed for the first time. The stability of the islands under tune modulation is investigated. 4 refs., 8 figs.

Future opportunities for hadron spectroscopy at the MPS

Before I go into detailed MPS experiments, I will give a summary of the status of lattice gauge calculations of glueball masses plus glueball and hybrid masses from the bag model, and the flux tube model. For the following discussion, I am going to assume that multi-quark states or molecules are best described in terms of the MIT bag model of Jaffe with its spectrum best defined by work done by R.L. Jaffe and F.E. Low using a method called The P-Matrix. Using this method one sees that all 4-quark states will appear as very broad continuum like effects that one would not associate with meson resonances, except for the S* and the delta which forms a very special threshold K/bar K/ bound systems. There is a possibility that the E(1420) may also be related to the J/sup PC/ = 1/sup + +/, qq/bar q//bar q/ spectrum having its width narrowed by a final state interaction.

Optimized multi-modal-operation designs for ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor)

The tokamak nonlinear optimization systems code TETRA has been expanded to contain the option of examining machine designs capable of ''multi-modal'' operations. The conceptual International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is an example of a ''bi-modal'' operating machine design in that it must be capable of both pulse-ignited and steady-state operations. This new version of TETRA allows for the optimization of a ''figure-of-merit'' which may involve several operating scenarios. We obtain for ITER minimum cost designs which are capable of igniting when operated in the pulsed mode as well as have reasonable Q > 5 when operated in steady-state. 3 refs., 3 tabs.

Recent developments in blood cell labeling research

A number of recent developments in research on blood cell labeling techniques are presented. The discussion relates to three specific areas: (1) a new in vitro method for red blood cell labeling with /sup 99m/Tc; (2) a method for labeling leukocytes and platelets with /sup 99m/Tc; and (3) the use of monoclonal antibody technique for platelet labeling. The advantages and the pitfalls of these techniques are examined in the light of available mechanistic information. Problems that remain to be resolved are reviewed. An assessment is made of the progress as well as prospects in blood cell labeling methodology including that using the monoclonal antibody approach. 37 refs., 4 figs.

Results of the BETS Survey of the CC Cryostat

This Engineering Note presents results of dimensional surveys of the CC Cryostat. The surveys were performed by members of the Fermilab Alignment Group using a computerized optical system known as BETS. The coordinate system used is described on page 1 of the note. Locations of the support bosses in the inner vessel are given on pages 2 and 3. The bosses control the position of the module array within the cryostat. Locations of the center cylinders (bores) and bypass tubes in both vessels are given on pages 2 and 4 through 6. Elevations and locations of the nozzles on top of the cryostat are given on page 9. Measurements of the stack-up heights of the support stanchions are given on page 13. Raw BETS data are included in Appendix A of the Note.

Sidewall flow instabilities in liquid metal MHD flow under blanket relevant conditions

A flow instability has been observed in a rectangular thin conducting wall duct in MHD experiments at ANL's ALEX facility. It developed in a side layer jet attached to a side wall parallel to the applied B-field. The nature of the instability resembles very strongly that of a classic laminar instability in ordinary fluid mechanics. The phenomenon is distinguished from ordinary turbulence by its strong periodicity and its lack of small scale structure. A preliminary identification of the factors which may influence the instability has been made. For the conditions and test section geometry reported here, the instability appears at an approximately constant critical Reynolds number 2650 < Re/sub cr/ < 5100, independent of Hartmann number in the range 2700 < M < 5400. 6 refs., 18 figs.
