Electromagnetic pair production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions (open access)

Electromagnetic pair production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We survey the production of electron, muon and tauon pairs in collisions between nuclei at ultra-relativistic energies. Such studies enhance our understanding of the role of the vacuum in field theory, and provide essential input for several experimental programs. A variety of models for the nuclear and nucleon form factors have been considered, revealing some degree of sensitivity to assumptions about sub-nuclear structure. We predict that the cross sections, even at high invariant masses and transverse momenta, are large on hadronic scales, and should act as useful probes of nuclear and nucleon form factors. 21 refs., 5 figs.

A review of experimental progress in gluonia (open access)

A review of experimental progress in gluonia

There has been considerable progress in gluonia investigations and their analysis. As requested by the Convenor, Rich Galik, I will cover the highlights of various conference papers and related work in an integrated manner which incorporates a review of the present state of glueballs (gluonia) to the extent space limitations allow. There are four general methods of searching for glueballs: J//psi/ radiative decay (iota, theta, xi(2.2)); OZI violating (g/sub T/, g/sub T/', g/sub T//double prime/); hadronic interaction pattern recognition of extra isosinglet states in addition to q/bar q/ nonets, iota, G, S*', g/sub s/; and double Pomeron exchange. These will be reviewed. 4 refs., 4 figs.

PACER Revisited (open access)

PACER Revisited

This paper discusses a modified version of the PACER concept for power and nuclear material production, which changes the working fluid in the cavity from steam to the molten salt, LiF + BeF/sub 2/. In the PACER concept, a 20-kt peaceful nuclear explosion is contained in a cavity about 200 m in diameter, filled with 200 atm of 500/degree/C steam. Energy from the explosion is used to produce power, and the neutrons are used to produce materials such as /sup 233/U, Pu, /sup 60/Co, and T. The present idea is to modify the PACER concept in three ways, to improve the practicality, predictability, and safety of power production from this technology and thus improve public acceptance of this power source. These improvements are line the cavity with steel; replace the steam with molten salt; and reduce the explosive yield to about 2 kt. This concept is the only fusion power concept where the underlying technology is proven and in hand today. 9 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.

(Gas discharges and applications)

The traveler attended the Ninth International Conference on Gas Discharges and Their Applications, which was held in Venice, Italy, on September 19--23, 1988; presented two papers, (1) Ion Chemistry in SF{sub 6} Corona'' and (2) Production of S{sub 2}F{sub 10} by SF{sub 6} Spark Discharge''; and participated in numerous discussions with conference participants on gas discharges related to his work on SF{sub 6}. The traveler visited the Centre de Physique Atomique at the University Paul Sabatier in Toulouse, France, to discuss with Dr. J. Casanovas his work on SF{sub 6} decomposition. Following that visit, the traveler visited the Laboratoire de Photoelectricite at the University of Dijon to discuss with Dr. J.-P. Goudonnet his work on surface studies and on the use of tunneling electron spectroscopy for the chemical analysis of surfaces.

D0 Cryogenic In-Line Filters (open access)

D0 Cryogenic In-Line Filters

The DO cryogenic system utilizes liquid argon (serving as the detector ionizing medium) and liquid nitrogen (refrigerant for the argon). In order to keep these fluids pure and minimize the likelihood of plugged instrumentation due to contamination, in-line filters will be installed on the following lines (see Cryogenic Flow Diagram, drawing 3740-ME-222394): 445LN, 412LN, 447LA, 427LA. and 422GA. The lines referred to by these labels are argon dewar LN2 supply, cryostat LN2 supply, LAr dewar fill/drain line, cryostat LAr fill/drain line, and dewar-to-cryostat argon gas line, respectively. Five filters are required. As of this writing, one has been built and tested. The others are to be identical in concept and construction.

Tank evaluation system shielded annular tank application (open access)

Tank evaluation system shielded annular tank application

TEST (Tank Evaluation SysTem) is a research project utilizing neutron interrogation techniques to analyze the content of nuclear poisons and moderators in tank shielding. TEST experiments were performed on an experimental SAT (Shielded Annular Tank) at the Rocky Flats Plant. The purpose of these experiments was threefold: (1) to assess TEST application to SATs, (2) to determine if Nuclear Safety inspection criteria could be met, and (3) to perform a preliminary calibration of TEST for SATs. Several experiments were performed, including measurements of 11 tank shielding configurations, source-simulated holdup experiments, analysis of three detector modes, resolution studies, and TEST scanner geometry experiments. 1 ref., 21 figs., 4 tabs.
