2-D emittance equation with acceleration and compression

Since both acceleration and compression are required for an Inertial Fusion Driver, the understanding of their effect on the beam quality, emittance, is important. This report attempts to generalize the usual emittance formula for the drifting beam to include these effects. The derivation of the 2-D emittance equation is carried out and a comparison with the particle code results is given. The 2-D emittance at a given axial location is reasonable to consider for a long beam, particularly with velocity tilt; transverse emittance averaged over the entire bunch is not a useful quantity. 6 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab.

Acceleration, current amplification and emittance in MBE-4, an experimental beam induction linear accelerator for heavy ions

We report on the implementation of a second schedule of acceleration and current amplification in MBE-4. Control of the beam current within the bunch is improved over that in the first schedule by the addition of several small amplitude induction pulsers to compensate for acceleration errors and to control the ends of the bunch. Advanced fusion MHD power conversion using the CFAR (compact fusion advanced Rankine) cycle concept

The CFAR (compact fusion advanced Rankine) cycle concept for a tokamak reactor involves the use of a high-temperature Rankine cycle in combination with microwave superheaters and nonequilibrium MHD disk generators to obtain a compact, low-capital-cost power conversion system which fits almost entirely within the reactor vault. The significant savings in the balance-of-plant costs are expected to result in much lower costs of electricity than previous concepts. This paper describes the unique features of the CFAR cycle and a high- temperature blanket designed to take advantage of it as well as the predicted performance of the MHD disk generators using mercury seeded with cesium. 40 refs., 8 figs., 3 tabs.

An alternate side coupled structure for the Fermilab LINAC upgrade

An alternate side coupled structure (SCS) is being investigated. Comparisons are made to the traditional SCS. Mechanical comparisons include the relative cost and ease of fabrication. This discussion also addresses the use of CNC machining. Electrical comparisons include field distributions and coupling constants. Measured and numerical data are presented. The coupling constant of the alternate SCS is adjusted by independently changing either the separation of the coupling and accelerating cavity centers or the length of the slot. These two parameters are not independent in the traditional SCS design. 4 refs., 5 figs

Annual survey of the Retired Piqua Nuclear Power Facility

The annual environmental radiological survey of the Retired Piqua Nuclear Power Facility was performed on October 12, 1988, by Battelle-Columbus. The radiation survey was performed on site and samples were collected for analyses at the Battelle West Jefferson radiochemistry laboratory. Samples collected included area smears to be counted for removable surface contamination, tap water, a sump water sample, and a sump sludge sample. Analyses were performed for these media as described in the survey specifications on page 11. The analyses indicate no significant change from past year's surveys and meet all applicable radiological criteria for the Piqua facility.

Antiproton annihilation in quantum chromodynamics

Anti-proton annihilation has a number of important advantages as a probe of QCD in the low energy domain. Exclusive reaction in which complete annihilation of the valance quarks occur. There are a number of exclusive and inclusive /bar p/ reactions in the intermediate momentum transfer domain which provide useful constraints on hadron wavefunctions or test novel features of QCD involving both perturbative and nonperturbative dynamics. Inclusive reactions involving antiprotons have the advantage that the parton distributions are well understood. In these lectures, I will particularly focus on lepton pair production /bar p/A ..-->.. /ell//bar /ell//X as a means to understand specific nuclear features in QCD, including collision broadening, breakdown of the QCD ''target length condition''. Thus studies of low to moderate energy antiproton reactions with laboratory energies under 10 GeV could give further insights into the full structure of QCD. 112 refs., 40 figs.

Atomic orbital data for elements with atomic numbers 1 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 103 (open access)

Atomic orbital data for elements with atomic numbers 1 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 103

Atomic orbital energies and radial expectation values are tabulated for the ground state electronic configuration of all elements with Z less than or equal to 103 and for all orbitals having principal quantum numbers n less than or equal to 8. These tables have been developed for use in a model of electronic excitation and ionization that requires orbital data for both the occupied and unoccupied orbitals. The wavefunctions were calculated by the Dirac-Hartree-Fock-Slater method, with a local exchange potential due to Liberman. This potential has the Coulombic form at large distances from the nucleus, with the result that both the occupied and unoccupied orbitals are bound states. The complete nonlocal exchange expression was used to compute the orbital energies. The results are in good agreement with full Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations for the occupied orbitals. 22 refs., 2 tabs.

Augmented Fish Health Monitoring for Washington Department of Wildlife, 1988 Annual Report.

The augmented fish health monitoring project is funded by the Bonneville Power Administration with the mandate to collect fish health data on anadromous fish stocks of the Columbia River Basin in a standardized manner. The project began in 1986 and the data reported here was collected in the third year. This segment of the project was carried out by the Washington Department of Wildlife and summarizes fish health findings at anadromous game hatcheries in Washington State operated by the BPA. Information gathered to date has provided impetus to alter facility design and management practices for improved fish health through prevention. Treatment efficacy can be better assessed due to the monthly monitoring of fish stocks and insight is being gained into disease prevention and control. The ultimate goal, of course, is to improve fish health for better survival in the wild. Tagged returns at index hatcheries within this project area will indicate the impact of improving fish health on providing greater adult returns as well as an improved product for the fishery. 2 refs., 3 figs., 15 tabs.

Beam transport with magnetic solenoids and plasma lenses

We examine the behavior of axisymmetric space-charge dominated beams in transport lines using numerical simulation. A typical transport line consisting of two axisymmetric linear lenses used to make a continuous beam from an ion source to a radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) is considered. We compare the beam evolution when both lenses are magnetic solenoids or Gabor plasma lenses for beams with different initial density profiles. Emittance oscillations due to nonlinear space-charge forces by the action of plasma lenses in which space-charge fields are shielded, but beam mismatch at the RFQ entrance can be significant for both types of lens. 8 refs., 6 figs.

Betatron Function Parameterization of Beam Optics including Acceleration

Betatron function parameterization of symplectic matrices is of recognized utility in beam optical computations. The traditional ''beta functions'' beta, alpha, gamma,(=(1+alpha{sup 2})/beta) and psi (the betratron phase advance) provide an emittance-independent representation of the properties of a beam transport system. They thereby decouple the problem of ''matching'' injected beam envelope properties to the acceptance of a particular transport system from the details of producing a beam of a specific emittance. The definition and interpretation of these parameters becomes, however, more subtle when acceleration effects, especially adiabatic damping (with associated nonsymplecticity of the transfer matrix), are included. We present algorithms relating symplectic representations of beam optics to the more commonly encountered nonsymplectic (x, x', y, y') representation which exhibits adiabatic damping. Betatron function parameterizations are made in both representations. Self-consistent physical interpretations of the betatron functions are given and applications to a standard beam transport program are made.

A CDU-based data acquisition system for the energy spectrometer at the Stanford Linear Collider

We describe a system using the Calorimetry Data Unit (a 32-channel multisample analog integrated circuit) to read out the charge ejected by secondary emission of a synchrotron beam from wires lying in its path. The wires comprise the Wire-Imaging Synchrotron Radiation Detector (WISRD) in the SLC Extraction-Line Spectrometer. The primary module in the system is a board containing 24 channels of charge sensitive amplification, shaping, sampling, multiplexing and digitization. This board also provides a fast analog measure of the charge distribution across the wires. We discuss the design and performance of this system. 4 refs., 5 figs.

These detectors will be used for particle identification using the Ring Imaging technique in the SLD experiment at SLAC. Chaotic spectra: How to extract dynamic information

Nonlinear dynamics is applied to chaotic unassignable atomic and molecular spectra with the aim of extracting detailed information about regular dynamic motions that exist over short intervals of time. It is shown how this motion can be extracted from high resolution spectra by doing low resolution studies or by Fourier transforming limited regions of the spectrum. These motions mimic those of periodic orbits (PO) and are inserts into the dominant chaotic motion. Considering these inserts and the PO as a dynamically decoupled region of space, resonant scattering theory and stabilization methods enable us to compute ladders of resonant states which interact with the chaotic quasi-continuum computed in principle from basis sets placed off the PO. The interaction of the resonances with the quasicontinuum explains the low resolution spectra seen in such experiments. It also allows one to associate low resolution features with a particular PO. The motion on the PO thereby supplies the molecular movements whose quantization causes the low resolution spectra. Characteristic properties of the periodic orbit based resonances are discussed. The method is illustrated on the photoabsorption spectrum of the hydrogen atom in a strong magnetic field and on the photodissociation spectrum of H/sub 3//sup +/. Other molecular …

Characterization of spent fuel approved testing material: ATM-106

The characterization data obtained to date are described for Approved Testing Material (ATM)-106 spent fuel from Assembly BT03 of pressurized-water reactor Calvert Cliffs No. 1. This report is one in a series being prepared by the Materials Characterization Center at Pacific Northwest Laboratory on spent fuel ATMs. The ATMs are receiving extensive examinations to provide a source of well- characterized spent fuel for testing in the US Department of Energy Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (OCWRM) program. ATM-106 consists of 20 full-length irradiated fuel rods with rod-average burnups of about 3700 GJ/kgM (43 MWd/kgM) and expected fission gas release of /approximately/10%. Characterization data include (1) as-fabricated fuel design, irradiation history, and subsequent storage and handling; (2) isotopic gamma scans; (3) fission gas analyses; (4) ceramography of the fuel and metallography of the cladding; (5) calculated nuclide inventories and radioactivities in the fuel and cladding; and (6) radiochemical analyses of the fuel and cladding. Additional analyses of the fuel rod are being conducted and will be included in planned revisions of this report. 12 refs., 110 figs., 81 tabs.
