Design of a Precast Concrete Stay-in-Place Forming System for Lock Wall Rehabilitation

Report describing the design of forming a system to use pre-cast concrete for rehabilitating damaged walls in locks, as a way to prevent problems with cracking in replacement air-entrained concrete used in standard methods.

Isabella Dam Spillway, Kern River, California: Hydraulic Model Investigation (open access)

Isabella Dam Spillway, Kern River, California: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Abstract: "Tests were conducted on a 1:50-scale model of Isabella Dam Spillway to determine the adequacy of proposed spillway, dam, and channel improvements. The model reproduced an area of the reservoir 800 ft wide by 1,100 ft long, the spillway, and the entire length of the exit channel. Unsatisfactory flow conditions were observed in the vicinity of the spillway crest due to approach conditions to the spillway. Large cross waves, present in the exit channel just downstream of the spillway, resulted in occasional overtopping of the right wall. A grouted rock dike that provided satisfactory flow conditions at the spillway and downstream throughout the exit channel was placed adjacent to the existing spillway approach wall."

State-of-the-Art for Assessing Earthquake Hazards in the United States, Report 25: Parameters for Specifying Intensity-Related Earthquake Ground Motions (open access)

State-of-the-Art for Assessing Earthquake Hazards in the United States, Report 25: Parameters for Specifying Intensity-Related Earthquake Ground Motions

Abstract: "A set of 12 charts are presented that relate Modified Mercalli intensity units to peak horizontal acceleration, velocity and duration for near field and far field locations, hard and soft sites, and sizes of earthquakes. Also shown is the mean, mean plus one standard deviation, mean plus two standard deviations, and the highest observed values. Ratios are provided of vertical to horizontal motions and predominant periods. These charts are for use with known fault sources and for floating earthquakes in zones where there are no identifiable causative faults. The procedure provides parameters for shaping time histories to be used for dynamic analyses."

Development of Nondestructive Testing Systems for in situ Evaluation of Concrete Structures (open access)

Development of Nondestructive Testing Systems for in situ Evaluation of Concrete Structures

Final report regarding the testing of concrete structures. Partial abstract: "The need for additional capability to nondestructively evaluate concrete in large structures is similar for both the US Army Corps of Engineers (CE) and the US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR). In view of this mutual need, the CE and the USBR entered into a cooperative program of research and development designed to increase the nondestructive testing evaluation capabilities of these two organizations, with each agency sharing the program planning and financial support."
