Status of the silicon strip vertex detector for the Mark II experiment at the SLC (open access)

Status of the silicon strip vertex detector for the Mark II experiment at the SLC

We are constructing a silicon strip vertex detector to be used in the Mark II detector in the study of Z/sup 0/ decays at the SLAC Linear Collider. The status of the project, including the performance of the individual silicon detector modules, is presented. 6 refs., 8 figs., 2 tabs.

SVI: Super-VIOR interface routines (open access)

SVI: Super-VIOR interface routines

This document describes a set of routines for a VME DMA module called the Super-VIOR. The Super-VIOR interface routines, also called the SVI routines, are written in PILS and run under a Valet-plus system. These routines enable a program to set up, execute, and monitor DMA operations. The Super-VIOR Interface Routines are written in PILS, a high level language similar to BASIC and Pascal which is powerful and fast enough for most applications. One of the most powerful features of the Valet/PILS system is the ability to set up exception vectors and exception handlers directly in a program. This feature is used to handle interrupts from the MC68450 (a 4 channel, 16 bit DMA controller) and the interface's front panel. This document is divided into ten sections, the first being the introduction. The remaining sections detail the interface registers, channel initiation, polling and interrupts, status reporting, front panel interrupts, the configuration routines, the operation control routines, the status reporting routines, and special comments on the MC68450.

Relationship between large-hole drilling rates and compressive strength of NTS (Nevada Test Site) rock types (open access)

Relationship between large-hole drilling rates and compressive strength of NTS (Nevada Test Site) rock types

Calculations to simulate and evaluate nuclear test containment require data on the strength of the geologic media at the work point and in the surrounding region. Studies cited in the literature reveal correlations between mechanical properties of rocks and various drilling parameters of large horizontal boring machines that share similarities with drilling assemblies used at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). An extensive selection of downhole core samples spanning the strength range of NTS rocks has been collected, stratigraphically and petrologically identified, and tested for strength as a function of confining pressure. Detailed data on the drilling rates are available for similar geologic units identified in the compilation and also for the specific rocks from these vertical holes that were tested. These data are used to discuss a preliminary empirical correlation between reported laboratory-measured compressive strength and drilling rates for various NTS rock types.

Predictions for nuclear properties along the r-process path (open access)

Predictions for nuclear properties along the r-process path

The uniformity of different nuclear regions as a function of the number of valence protons and neutrons (counted from the nearest closed shell) has been exploited for the parameterization of calculations for nuclei far from stability within the IBA model. Predictions are given for low lying levels, E2 transition rates, and binding energies for nuclei in the r-process path in the A = 150 and A = 190 mass regions. 6 refs., 6 figs.
