The Mark III Vertex Chamber (open access)

The Mark III Vertex Chamber

The design and construction of the new Mark III vertex chamber is described. Initial tests with cosmic rays prove the ability of track reconstruction and yield triplet resolutions below 50 ..mu..m at 3 atm using argon/ethane (50:50). Also performed are studies using a prototype of a pressurized wire vertex chamber with 8 mm diameter straw geometry. Spatial resolution of 35mm was obtained using dimethyl ether (DME) at 1 atm and 30 ..mu..m using argon/ethane (50/50 mixture) at 4 atm. Preliminary studies indicate the DME to adversely affect such materials as aluminized Mylar and Delrin.

CSDP: The seismology of continental thermal regimes: Final report for period April 1, 1986-April 1, 1987 (open access)

CSDP: The seismology of continental thermal regimes: Final report for period April 1, 1986-April 1, 1987

This report describes progress in the study of both wave propagation in complex structures and source mechanism of geothermal seismic events. The following work was accomplished in the past one-year period: (1) interpretation of long-period events observed at Mt. St. Helens and at the Fenton Hill hot-dry-rock experimental site in terms of seismic radiation from a fluid-filled crack; (2) interpretation of teleseismic data collected in and near the Valles caldera in terms of a model with irregular topography, caldera fill, and magma chamber; (3) interpretation of VSP (Vertical Seismic Profiling) data from the Oroville fault zone by ray tracing and polarization calculation for P, SV, and SH waves in heterogeneous and anisotropic media containing aligned fluid-filled and/or dry cracks; and (4) development of a new powerful method for calculating seismic motions in media with irregular topography and interfaces by the superposition of Gaussian Beams.

Tactical Vulnerability Assessment Training Program (open access)

Tactical Vulnerability Assessment Training Program

The Department of Energy sponsors a 9-day training program for individual who are responsible for evaluating and planning safeguards systems and for preparing DOE Master and Security Agreements (MSSAs). These agreements between DOE headquarters and operations offices establish required levels of protection. The curriculum includes: (1) the nature of potential insider and outsider threats involving theft or diversion of special nuclear material, (2) use of computerized tools for evaluating the effectiveness of physical protection and material control and acoountability systems, and (3) methods for analyzing the benefits and costs of safeguards improvements and for setting priorities among proposed upgrades. The training program is varied and highly interactive. Presentations are intermixed with class discussions and ''hands-on'' analysis using computer tools. At the end of the program, participants demonstrate what they have learned in a two-and-one-half day ''field excercise,'' which is conducted on a facility scale-model. The training programs has been conducted six times and has been attended by representatives of all DOE facilities. Additional sessions are planned at four-month intervals. This paper describes the training program, use of the tools in preparing MSSAs for various DOE sites, and recent extensions and refinements of the evaluation tools.

Conventional power sources for colliders (open access)

Conventional power sources for colliders

At SLAC we are developing high peak-power klystrons to explore the limits of use of conventional power sources in future linear colliders. In an experimental tube we have achieved 150 MW at 1 ..mu..sec pulse width at 2856 MHz. In production tubes for SLAC Linear Collider (SLC) we routinely achieve 67 MW at 3.5 ..mu..sec pulse width and 180 pps. Over 200 of the klystrons are in routine operation in SLC. An experimental klystron at 8.568 GHz is presently under construction with a design objective of 30 MW at 1 ..mu..sec. A program is starting on the relativistic klystron whose performance will be analyzed in the exploration of the limits of klystrons at very short pulse widths.

New apparatus for direct counting of. beta. particles from two-dimensional gels and an application to changes in protein synthesis due to cell density (open access)

New apparatus for direct counting of. beta. particles from two-dimensional gels and an application to changes in protein synthesis due to cell density

A new method is described for scanning two-dimensional gels by the direct counting of ..beta.. particles instead of autoradiography. The methodology is described; results are compared with autoradiographic results; and data are presented demonstrating changed patterns of protein synthesis accompanying changes in cell density. The method is rapid and permits identification of differences in protein abundance of approximately 10% for a substantial fraction of the more prominent proteins. A modulation effect of more than 5 standard deviations, accompanying contact inhibition of cell growth, is shown to occur for an appreciable number of these proteins. The method promises to be applicable to a variety of biochemical and genetic experiments designed to delineate changes in protein synthesis accompanying changes in genome, molecular environment, history, and state of differentiation of the cell populations studied. 13 refs., 8 figs., 4 tabs.

Core refueling subsystem design description. Revision 1 (open access)

Core refueling subsystem design description. Revision 1

The Core Refueling Subsystem of the Fuel Handling and Storage System provides the mechanisms and tools necessary for the removal and replacement of the hexagonal elements which comprise the reactor core. The Core Refueling Subsystem is not "safety-related." The Core Refueling Subsystem equipment is used to prepare the plant for element removal and replacement, install the machines which handle the elements, maintain control of air inleakage and radiation release, transport the elements between the core and storage, and control the automatic and manual operations of the machines. Much of the element handling is performed inside the vessel, and the entire exchange of elements between storage and core is performed with the elements in a helium atmosphere. The core refueling operations are conducted with the reactor module shutdown and the primary coolant pressure slightly subatmospheric. The subsystem is capable of accomplishing the refueling in a reliable manner commensurate with the plant availability requirements.

Development of fiber optics sensors for temperature measurement and chemical analysis in geothermal wells (open access)

Development of fiber optics sensors for temperature measurement and chemical analysis in geothermal wells

In this paper the results of research on high temperature optical fiber sensors will be presented. We have shown that these sensors (optrodes) can be made to work in very high temperature water for long periods and that it is possible to measure pH using fluorescent inorganic ions doped into solid matrices. A high temperature pH optrode can be made using these techniques, however, more research is needed into the chemistry of the carrier matrices and fluorescent dopants.

EXELFS (Extended Electron Energy Loss Fine Structure) of amorphous and crystalline SiC. [Extended Electron Energy Loss Fine Structure] (open access)

EXELFS (Extended Electron Energy Loss Fine Structure) of amorphous and crystalline SiC. [Extended Electron Energy Loss Fine Structure]

Extended Electron Energy Loss Fine Structure (EXELFS) is a technique which is sensitive to the local atomic environment surrounding atoms. The ability to perform EXELFS measurements with the use of an electron microscope enables one to study materials properties at high spatial resolution. Its use as a method to evaluate amorphous materials is especially noteworthy since EXELFS is sensitive to the structure and composition within near neighbor distances of specific types of atoms. The materials used in this study included single crystal SiC, single crystal SiC made amorphous by ion implantation with chromium, and single crystal SiC made amorphous under a converged 300 kV electron beam. EXELFS results, based upon the Si K edge, exhibit significant differences for crystalline SiC versus the SiC made amorphous by ion implantation. The position of peaks in the radial distribution function (RDF), representing the Si-C and the Si-Si interatomic bonds, indicate an expansion in the nearest neighbor distances for the ion implanted amorphous SiC. Also the Si-Si/Si-C peak intensity ratio for the amorphous material was significantly lower than that for crystalline SiC. These results imply that the tetrahedral (Si-C) bonds are retained to a greater degree than the longer Si-Si bonds. A loss in …
