Los Alamos Controlled Air Incinerator for hazardous chemical and mixed radioactive wastes (open access)

Los Alamos Controlled Air Incinerator for hazardous chemical and mixed radioactive wastes

The Los Alamos Controlled Air Incinerator (CAI) is currently the only radioactive waste incineration facility in the US permitted to treat polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The CAI was developed in the mid-1970's as a demonstration system for volume reduction of transuranic (TRU) contaminated combustible solid wastes. It has since undergone additions and modifications to accommodate hazardous chemical wastes in response to a need within the Department of Energy (DOE) to treat mixed radioactive/chemical wastes. An overview of these additions which include a liquid feed system, a high intensity liquid injection burner, and an activated carbon adsorption unit is presented here. Also included is a discussion of the procedures required for Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) permitting of the CAI.

Los Alamos Experiment on the Beta Decay of Free Molecular Tritium (open access)

Los Alamos Experiment on the Beta Decay of Free Molecular Tritium

The beta spectrum of the decay of free molecular tritium has been accurately measured in order to search for a finite anti nu/sub e/ mass. The betas originating from the decay of free tritium molecules in a differentially pumped source region were momentum analyzed in a toroidal beta spectrometer with 36-eV resolution. The final state effects in molecular tritium are accurately known and the data thus allow us to set an upper limit of 29.3 eV on the anti nu/sub e/ mass at the 95% confidence level.

Los Alamos experiments on the few nucleon systems (open access)

Los Alamos experiments on the few nucleon systems

A summary of recently studied proton-, pion-, and neutron-induced reactions on nuclei up to /sup 4/He at LAMPF is given. Upgrades to the LAMPF experimental facilities for these studies are described. Some new proton-proton total cross sections in pure helicity states (..delta..sigma/sub L/(pp)) from the ZGS near 3 GeV/c are also presented. 46 refs., 4 figs.

Los Alamos free molecular and atomic tritium beta decay experiment (open access)

Los Alamos free molecular and atomic tritium beta decay experiment

An initial measurement of the tritium beta spectrum spanning an energy range of 16.4 - 18.9 keV has been performed using a free molecular tritium gas source. With the data from this preliminary low statistics measurement (approx.72 hours of data), we are able to set an upper limit on the electron-antineutrino mass of 36 eV at the 95% confidence level. Measurements with a gaseous source eliminate many of the ambiguities arising from uncertainties associated with solid-source-based measurements. The ultimate neutrino mass sensitivity of our system should be about 10 eV or less. 13 refs., 9 figs.

Los Alamos Installation for the Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometric Analysis of Radioactive Solutions

This report discusses the selection and installation of an inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer for the analysis of radioactive solutions. An Applied Research Laboratories 3580 inductively coupled plasma atomic emission combination polychromator and sequential scanning monochromator was selected. Instrument performance, drybox design, interfaces, proposed separation schemes, and laboratory layout are discussed. 6 refs., 6 figs., 3 tabs.

Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center

The Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center (LANSCE) is a new pulsed spallation neutron source at the Los Alamos National Laboratory for neutron scattering research in the structure and dynamics of materials. LANSCE is expected to achieve the world's highest peak thermal neutron flux of 1.7 x 10/sup 16/ n/cm/sup 2/-sec at 12 Hz by 1988. The scientific potential and development plans for the facility are described.

Alfred & Joyce Wind Home

Photograph of a single-story brick home in Danevang, Texas, belonging to Alfred and Joyce Wind. The house has an intersecting gable roof with dark-colored shingles. The pediments created by the roofs have been covered with wooden siding; the rest of the walls are covered in alternating dark brick. Two small trees are on the front lawn, and a third much larger tree can be seen behind the house.

Alternate method of decay-heat removal in a C-E plant following a SBLOCA (open access)

Alternate method of decay-heat removal in a C-E plant following a SBLOCA

The use of an atmospheric steam-dump procedure to cool and depressurize a Combustion-Engineering plant, Calvert Cliffs-1, following small-break loss-of-coolant accidents with failure of the high-pressure injection system to operate has been investigated. The procedure was effective in depressuizing the primary to the low-pressure injection system operating pressure and design temperature using water supplies from the safety-grade condensate water storage tank only. The procedure was found to be effective even if additional failures occurred. Specifically, low-pressure injection conditions were attained if only a single atmospheric dump valve was available or if the safety-injection tanks (accumulators) were not available.

Amalgam

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
This composition is music for a ballet, made for the The National Ballet of Iceland and was first performed in November 1986 in Reykjavík. Amalgam is an alloy of mercury. Practically all metals will form alloys of amalgams with mercury, with the notable exception of iron. Amalgams are used as dental materials and as electrodes in various industrial and laboratory electrolytic processes. The ballet was made for six dancers, dressed in gray tight clothes with a golden stripe on the back walking, standing, and dancing on a narrow, strong light beams
