Accelerating the Loop Expansion (open access)

Accelerating the Loop Expansion

This thesis introduces a new non-perturbative technique into quantum field theory. To illustrate the method, I analyze the much-studied phi/sup 4/ theory in two dimensions. As a prelude, I first show that the Hartree approximation is easy to obtain from the calculation of the one-loop effective potential by a simple modification of the propagator that does not affect the perturbative renormalization procedure. A further modification then susggests itself, which has the same nice property, and which automatically yields a convex effective potential. I then show that both of these modifications extend naturally to higher orders in the derivative expansion of the effective action and to higher orders in the loop-expansion. The net effect is to re-sum the perturbation series for the effective action as a systematic ''accelerated'' non-perturbative expansion. Each term in the accelerated expansion corresponds to an infinite number of terms in the original series. Each term can be computed explicitly, albeit numerically. Many numerical graphs of the various approximations to the first two terms in the derivative expansion are given. I discuss the reliability of the results and the problem of spontaneous symmetry-breaking, as well as some potential applications to more interesting field theories. 40 refs.

Investigation of a fossil geothermal system, Hamblin-Cleopatra Volcano, Clark County, Nevada. Final technical report (open access)

Investigation of a fossil geothermal system, Hamblin-Cleopatra Volcano, Clark County, Nevada. Final technical report

The Hamblin-Cleopatra volcano, selected for study because erosion and fault displacement have exposed the entire volcanic succession, the intrusive core, a radial dike systems, and sedimentary and volcanic rocks that predate and postdate the volcano, was investigated to estimate the proportions of igneous materials forming lava flows, pyroclastic deposits, intrusive bodies, and reworked debris. Chemical changes in the magma throughout the active period of the volcano were documented. The geothermal system active within the pile after activity ceased was reconstructed. (ACR)

Dispersive effects of transverse displacements of SLC Arc magnets (open access)

Dispersive effects of transverse displacements of SLC Arc magnets

The SLC Arc magnets are subject to random displacements and field errors resulting in unpredictable transverse displacement of the central trajectory from that of the design. The chosen method of correcting this perturbed trajectory in the SLC Arcs utilizes mechanical movement of the combined function magnets which compose the Arc transport lines. Here we present the results of a recent investigation substantiating the earlier results which led to the adoption of this method.

Proposed tandem mirror research program for FY87 presented to the MFAC subcommittee on mirror research, July 8-9, 1986

We have reexamined the goal of approx.10/sup 13/ cm/sup -3/ central-cell density with end-plugging and reconfirmed its importance as a test of thermal barrier end-plugging performance in either Tara or TMX-U. We conclude that, when all factors are considered including the impact on other programs interlinked with LLNL in the present OFE budget, the lowest cost approach to have a fair chance to meet this goal is to extend Tara operation for the full FY87. Continuation of TMX-U operation in FY87, in addition to the full year of Tara operation, would greatly improve the chance of success. Continuation of the mirror program into FY88 and beyond would be based on an experimental program in TMX-U and Tara at a minimum budget level of $25M/y, with restart of MFTF-B requiring an increase in the national fusion budget. The experimental program to be investigated by TMX-U and Tara would include improvement in the mgnetic geometry (stability, beta limits, and transport), continued plug studies (longer pulse length, impurities, drift pumping, and ECH efficiency), and transport studies (chi/sub e/, fueling, and halo formation).

A design chart for long vacuum pipes and shells (open access)

A design chart for long vacuum pipes and shells

This paper presents a design chart to aid designers in the selection of a wall thickness for long cylindrical shells having atmospheric pressure outside the shell and a pressure less than atmospheric inside the shell. The chart indicates a conservative value for the minimum wall thickness for a given shell diameter and material when the shell is completely evacuated.

Perturbations to the horizontal off-energy functions in the arcs (open access)

Perturbations to the horizontal off-energy functions in the arcs

The perturbation of off-energy functions in the arcs affects the SLC performance in two ways. First of all, it introduces additional emittance blow-up in the arcs through synchrotron radiation loss. Secondly, if the perturbation is too large, the chromatic correction in the final focus cannot completely suppress the eta at IP resulting in a larger beam size. Both effects reduce the luminosity. In this report an analysis is made of the disturbances to the horizontal eta-function generated by imperfections in the arcs ad their effects are estimated.

Coupling impedance of laminated magnets in the booster (open access)

Coupling impedance of laminated magnets in the booster

The magnets in the Fermilab Booster Synchrotron are laminated in order to minimize the eddy current losses and associated field distortions expected at a 15 Hz operating frequency. To further reduce the eddy current losses, the vacuum chamber is outside the magnet, hence allowing the beam induced wall currents to see the laminations directly. This note estimates the coupling impedances and beam energy loss per turn caused by the exposed laminations.

Background radiation in the SLC ir from collimators and tune-up dumps in the ARCS (open access)

Background radiation in the SLC ir from collimators and tune-up dumps in the ARCS

There are various beam intercepting devices between the interaction point and the beam dumps of the SLC. Of these, the adjustable collimators, a fixed collimator, and the tune-up dumps are expected to intercept enough of the beam to warrant calculating the fluxes inside the interaction hall from them. The fluences of neutrons and photons in the interaction hall from these sources. Whether the beam has passed the interaction point or not is considered important in choosing a source term, primarily for photons. Neutron calculations are done only for giant resonance neutrons.
