6 GeV synchrotron x-ray source: Conceptual design report. Supplement A - characteristics of the insertion devices for the 6 GeV synchrotron source

Historically, synchrotron radiation (SR) has been obtained primarily from bending-magnet (BM) sources. These continuous sources of electromagnetic radiation have contributed in a major way to our understanding of the structure and dynamics of biological, chemical and material systems. During the past few years, newer sources of SR based on sophisticated periodic magnetic structures, called insertion devices (IDs), have been developed. The electromagnetic radiation from these IDs can be used as a very versatile probe in scientific and technological research which is far superior to that based on a BM source.

1985 annual site environmental report for Argonne National Laboratory

This is one in a series of annual reports prepared to provide DOE, environmental agencies, and the public with information on the level of radioactive and chemical pollutants in the environment and on the amounts of such substances, if any, added to the environment as a result of Argonne operations. Included in this report are the results of measurements obtained in 1985 for a number of radionuclides in air, surface water, ground water, soil, grass, bottom sediment, and milk; for a variety of chemical constituents in surface and subsurface water; and for the external penetrating radiation dose.

Amplitude dependence of the tune shift (open access)

Amplitude dependence of the tune shift

Recent studies in the Tevatron have measured the tune shift as a function of the displacement from a closed orbit. The measured values of tune shift were found to be much smaller than one would expect from the measured distribution of the normal octupole moments in the Tevatron. Tracking studies performed to see if, and under what conditions, the observed results could be obtained are reported. The effect of linear coupling is taken into consideration, and is found to significantly reduce the coefficient of the tune shift. The dependence of the tune shift on the initial coordinate of a particle in the presence of a distribution of octupole moments is calculated. The ''smear'' is calculated as a function of linear coupling. (LEW)

Analysis and testing of the HP-R-214 dome monitor cable from Three Mile Island Unit 2 (open access)

Analysis and testing of the HP-R-214 dome monitor cable from Three Mile Island Unit 2

After the accident at Three Mile Island, Unit 2, two sections of a cable connected to the HP-R-214 dome monitor were removed for testing. One section had been directly exposed to the accident environment: the other had been installed in conduit. In addition, an unused section of cable, which was from the same reel as the dome monitor cable, was available as a control sample. These three sections were subjected to material tests, including density profiling, tensile-strength and elongation tests, and chemical analyses, to assess the effect of the accident on the cable and to identify whether any differences existed between the in-conduit and out-of-conduit sections.

Anisotropy of transverse sound in the heavy Fermian supersonductor UPt/sub 3/ (open access)

Anisotropy of transverse sound in the heavy Fermian supersonductor UPt/sub 3/

We report the first measurements of the attenuation of ultrasound in the basal plane of superconducting UPt/sub 3/. Transverse sound propagating along the b-axis shows a marked anisotropy in its temperature dependence when the polarization is rotated in and out of the basal plane. For polarization in the basal plane the attenuation varies linearly with temperature down to 35 mK and the slope scales as the square of the frequency. Our results appear to indicate the presence of an additional attenuation mechanism when compared with recent theories of anisotropic superconductors in the dirty limit. 18 refs., 3 figs.

Application of software quality assurance to a specific scientific code development task

This paper describes an application of software quality assurance to a specific scientific code development program. The software quality assurance program consists of three major components: administrative control, configuration management, and user documentation. The program attempts to be consistent with existing local traditions of scientific code development while at the same time providing a controlled process of development.

Automated Measurement of Frequency Response of Frequency-Modulated Generators Using the Bessel Null Method

From abstract: This paper describes a Bessel null technique to measure the frequency response of a frequency-modulated rf carrier and a program to automate frequency response measurements of signal generators with output frequencies from 0.450 to 2000 MHz. The measurements obtained using this technique are more precise than those obtained by a highly trained technician using a manual system.
