Cindy's Feller: an Adaptation of Cinderella (open access)

Cindy's Feller: an Adaptation of Cinderella

The problem with which this thesis is concerned is that of writing and directing an adaptation of the classic fairy tale, Cinderella. This study is a culmination of research on children's theatre, and the writing and producing of children's plays. The research led to the writing of the first draft of Cindy's Feller, an adaptation of Cinderella, beginning with a scenario which utilized a country-western theme. Upon completion of the first draft, the play was produced at North Texas State University during the summer of 1981. Stage directions of the play, a director's log of daily rehearsals, and an evaluation of the final productions were recorded to provide a stimulus for the writing of a final draft of Cindy's Feller and the preparation of this thesis.

A Comparison of Straight-Stained, Q-stained, and Reverse Flourescent-Stained Cell Lines for Detection of Fragile Sites on the Human X Chromosome (open access)

A Comparison of Straight-Stained, Q-stained, and Reverse Flourescent-Stained Cell Lines for Detection of Fragile Sites on the Human X Chromosome

Cell cultures were examined for percentage of fragile sites seen in straight-stained, Q-stained and reverse fluorescent-stained preparations. In all cases, percentage of fragile site expression was decreased when compared to straight-stained preparations. However, fragile sites seen in Q- and RF-stain could be identified as on X chromosomes.

Heinrich Zille's Berlin: Selected Themes from 1900 to 1914 : the Triumph of "Art from the Gutter"

Heinrich Zille (1858-1929), an artist whose creative vision was concentrated on Berlin's working class , portrayed urban life with devastating accuracy and earthy humor. His direct and often crude rendering linked his drawing and prints with other artists who avoided sentimentality and idealization in their works.

Interaction of Legionella Pneumophila and Selected Algae and Response to Disinfectants (open access)

Interaction of Legionella Pneumophila and Selected Algae and Response to Disinfectants

Two species of cyanobacteria (Fischeralla sp. 29161 and Phormidium autumnale) and one species of green algae (Fritschiella tuberosa) were found to promote survival of Legionella pneumophila in mineral salts medium cocultures. During the early stage of incubation Fischerella sp. supported growth of Legionella pneumophila even though the bacteria would not grow in the algae-free basal medium.

The Intracellular Location of Carotenoid Pigments in the Yeast- Phase of Wangiella Dermatitidis (open access)

The Intracellular Location of Carotenoid Pigments in the Yeast- Phase of Wangiella Dermatitidis

Carotenoids in W. dermatitids were found to be associated with membranes of lipid globules and/or proteins dispersed in the lipids in the yeast-phase of the organism. The lipid globules increase in size and the pigment concentrations increase with age of the cell. Electron micrographs show these organelles to be surrounded by a single unit membrane. The free carotenoids are extractable with ethyl ether from pigmented fractions of osmotically ruptured protoplasts only after the sample has been treated with acetone, indicating the pigment is non-covalently bound, presumably to a protein.

Investigation of the Developmental Profile of Chromosomal Proteins in Zea Mays (open access)

Investigation of the Developmental Profile of Chromosomal Proteins in Zea Mays

Histone proteins were examined during development in the meiotic elongate and a genetically close line N6HT. Histones were also extracted from an F1 (el x N6Ht). Comparisonc beteen the histone samples from each line of N6HT and elongate, and the F1 for leaf, root, and stem were inconclusive. A tassel sample form elongate exhibited a markedly slower migrating band that was not present in N6HT. The histone profiles of elongate and N6HT also differed. Each line N6HT and elongate exhibited three protein bands in the H1 region. Maize histone samples have been shown to exhibit four major H1 bands. The possibility exists that an H1 protein altered in its molecular weight and possibly in its interaction with the chromosome is present in elongate.

Missa Salve Regina (open access)

Missa Salve Regina

Missa Salve Regina, a five movement work, is approximately twenty minutes in duration. The work is a setting of the Ordinary of the Mass in Latin with additional text in the vernacular drawn from the writings of Miguel de Unamuno. The composition is scored for four speaking soloists (SATB), mixed chorus (SATB, percussion (player 1: tam tam, three suspended cymbal, bass drum, three tom-toms, glockenspiel, maracas, and marimba), and digital synthesizer optionally on tape. The Missa Salve Regina is concerned with the spiritual implications of the mass and its ritual. The music is composed for both concert presentation and use within the liturgy and deals with the conflict between faith and reason in the human mind, discussed at length, by Unamuno.

Purification and Characterization of Glycogen Synthase from Ascaris Suum (open access)

Purification and Characterization of Glycogen Synthase from Ascaris Suum

Glycogen synthase, the enzyme that catalyzes the rate-limiting reaction of glycogen syntheses has been purified and characterized from Ascaris suum muscle. Glycogen in the crude extract was digested to release the enzyme, eluted from a DE52 cellulose column and then applied to a Sepharose affinity column. The purified Ascaris enzyme was found to be homologous to the mammalian enzyme with regard to subunit and holoenzyme Mr^3 allosteric activation, substrate affinity and covalent modification. However, the association between Ascaris glycogen synthase and endogenous glycogen differed from that in mammalian systems.

The Squirrel Cage (open access)

The Squirrel Cage

The Squirrel Cage is an intermedia composition set in three scenes and two interludes. The composition is based on the short story "The Squirrel Cage" by Thomas M. Disch. Robin Kay Willoughby created the libretto for the composition. The drama for The Squirrel Cage focuses on the actor who is being held captive in a white, padded cell. He does not know how long he has been in the cell or even why he is being held. His only source of stimulation is through the broadcast of National Public Radio that he hears in his cell. The only way he can attempt to communicate with the outside world is through the microphone in his cell, though he never knows if anyone hears his pleas for help. The music is constant expression of his environment and friendly responds directly to the performer's gestures. This volume contains the dissertation text.
