Entry Level Competencies for Recreational Sports Personnel as Identified by Chairs of Preparatory Institutions

The problem of this study was to determine if the competencies identified by recreational sports practitioners as most needed for entry into the profession were the same as those identified by chairpersons of preparatory departments. Furthermore, this study determined if chairpersons of physical education and recreation curricula identified significantly different competency areas for entry level personnel. The two populations of respondents were from sixty seven institutions listed in the 1982 SPRE-NRPA Curriculum Catalog. Each subject was asked to complete a copy of the Jamieson Recreational Sports Competency Analysis. The criterion scores for each of the statements were divided into twelve competency areas for analysis.

Perceptions of Student Participants Toward Small Business Institute Programs at Selected Institutions of Higher Education in Texas

This investigation examines the perceptions of students enrolled in Small Business Institute (SBI) courses at six collegiate schools of business toward various aspects of the SBI experience. A questionnaire, adapted from an earlier study, was assessed for content validity by appropriate authorities in the areas of the SBI, entrepreneurship, and business communications. Two administrations of the questionnaire were given at an approximate three-month interval. The initial administration preceded all contacts between student consultants and clients. The second administration was given some three months later to essentially the same body of students following extensive contacts with clients. More than 75 per cent of the pre-test respondents also took the post test, thereby augmenting the validity of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Chi-square statistics employed in the study. Results of the study indicate the existence of significant inter-school differences among student perceptions toward the SBI experience, both prior and subsequent to the initiation of contacts with clients. On the other hand, there were no significant differences in pre- and post-administration response patterns within the schools.

A Study of the Perceptions of Administrators in Higher Education Concerning the Power and Influence of External Forces on the Actions of the Texas Legislature in Financing Public Higher Education from 1965 Through 1983

The problem with which this study is concerned is that of the influence of local- and state-level external forces on the actions of the Texas legislature with respect to financing public higher education at senior institutions in Texas during the period from 1965 through 1983 as perceived by high ranking academic administrators. The specially designed survey instrument elicited respondents' perceptions of the degree of influence of specified local— and state-level external forces on institutional funding and the amount and usefulness of contacts made by respondents with such forces in an effort to exert influence for the purpose of increasing state funding for their institutions.

A Study of Motivation to Work and Job Satisfaction of Student Activities Advisors at Srinakharinwirot University in Thailand

The problem with which this study is concerned is the motivation to work and the job satisfaction of faculty members who work both as full-time instructors and student activities advisors at eight campuses of Srinakharinwirot University in Thailand. In relationship to the respondent student activities advisors, the purposes of this study were (a) to study the perceived relationship between motivation to work and job satisfaction, (b) to compare perceptions of motivation to work and job satisfaction according to selected demographic variables, and (c) to determine whether or not these variables significantly contribute to the prediction of motivation to work and job satisfaction for the sample population. Two published survey instruments were used to collect the data. Both instruments were administered to 206 student activities advisors of Srinakharinwirot University; usable, completed questionnaires were returned by 191 (92,7%) respondents. The statistical treatments applied to the collected data for seven research hypotheses include the Kentall Tau correlation coefficient, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple regression analysis. The numerous data findings from this study appear to support several conclusions. A Survey of Wellness Programs in Junior and Community Colleges in the United States

This study is concerned with the problem of determining the types and characteristics of wellness programs presently offered by selected junior and community colleges throughout the United States. The purposes include (1) the investigation of the extent to which the six dimensional scheme of wellness, as developed by William Hettler, M. D. [Family and Community Health, May, 1980], has been implemented on the campuses of junior and community colleges and (2) an exploration of the validity of Hettler's model of wellness for these institutions. The study population sample is the membership list of the junior and community college section of the American College Health Association, which is a multidisciplinary professional organization for university and college health administrators. The specially designed survey instrument produced a 73 per cent response return. Response frequencies and percentages were gathered to show the current and anticipated prevalence of different types of wellness programs and the current and anticipated management related characteristics of wellness offerings in these college settings. Several open-ended questions also produced narrative respondent opinions.

A Comparative Study of Opinions Concerning Faculty Teaching Behaviors Among Faculty Members and Senior Teacher Training Students in Six Teachers Colleges in Bangkok Thailand

The purpose of this study is to compare the opinions concerning faculty teaching behaviors among groups of faculty members and senior teacher training students in six teachers colleges in Bangkok, Thailand. Five research hypotheses guided the data analysis for this study; the variables used were sex, age, teaching experience, and college of employment. A published, validated survey instrument, which lists sixty-one behavioral items and incorporates a Likert-type response scale, was used to collect the data. Random sampling of the population corresponded to existing male-female ratios for each group at each schools, with the exception of one school that has only female students. From the sample of 480, the total response was 85.6 percent. In order to test for significant differences of opinion among the variables and between the groups at the .05 level, t and F tests were applied. The data indicate that 70.5 percent of the 190 responding faculty are females who have taught for more than ten years; females also constitute 72.4 percent of the 221 senior teacher training students. A Comparison of Academic Performance and Progress Toward Graduation Between Presumptive-Deny and Regularly Admitted Students in a Large Public University

This study is concerned with the problem of measuring, describing, and analyzing the academic performance and progress toward graduation over a five-year period (1977- 1983) of students who entered a large public university through an admissions review committee process for presumptive-deny students. The purpose of this study is to compare the academic performance of these students (N = 310) with that of randomly selected students who entered through the regular admissions process (N = 350) to determine if the review committee's decisions were as effective in selecting students for admission as were the objective data (college entrance examination scores and rank in high school class) used in the regular admissions process. Neither transfer nor non-United States citizens were included in either group.

An Analysis of Current Faculty Evaluation Practices in Two Selected Universities in Thailand

The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare the current faculty evaluation practices in two universities in Thailand as perceived by faculty and administrators. Although both institutions are universities, one is notably larger and more diversified. From a sample population of 450 (250 each), the response rate was 71.8 per cent. A survey instrument was used to collect the data early in 1984. Statistical procedures used in the analyses of data include frequency and percentage of responses, analysis of variance for split-plot repeated measures design, t tests, and binomial distribution as required to answer the twelve research questions designed to guide the study.

A Comparison of Present and Preferred Institutional Goals Among Board Members, Administrators, and Faculty of Teacher Colleges in Bangkok, Thailand

The problem with which this study is concerned is to compare the perceptions of board members, administrators, and faculty of six teacher colleges in Bangkok, Thailand, in regard to the present and preferred educational goals of Thai teacher colleges. From a total population sample of 345, usable returns totaled 284 (82.3 per cent); respondents include 22 board members, 43 administrators, and 219 faculty. A published goal inventory questionnaire was modified, translated into Thai, and used to collect the data; modifications include the addition of goal statements that are relevant to Thai teacher colleges. The modified survey instrument included 72 goal statements, categorized into 18 goal areas, plus 12 relevant goal statements. Statistical procedures used include mean scores and standard deviations, analysis of variance (with Scheffe post hoc comparisons for significant differences), and the t test.

The purpose is to identify, describe, and analyze existing relationships between satisfaction with college, academic achievement, and goal commitment for nursing majors in a baccalaureate nursing program that has high retention. Data were collected using two survey instruments and student grade-point averages.
