Flood Elevations for the Soleduck River at Sol Duc Hot Springs, Clallam County, Washington

Abstract: Elevations and inundation areas of a 100-year flood of the Soleduck River, Washington, were determined by the U.S. Geological Survey for the area in the vicinity of the Sol Duc Hot Springs resort, a public facility in the Olympic National Park that under Federal law must be located beyond or protected from damage by a 100-year flood. Results show that most flooding could be eliminated by raising parts of an existing dike. In general, little flood damage is expected, except at the southern end of an undeveloped airstrip that could become inundated and hazardous due to flow from s tributary. The airstrip is above the 100-year flood of the Soleduck River.

From introduction: In this report, two programs have been developed for use in managing data derived from an aquifer thermal-energy storage (ATES) project being done by the University of Minnesota. Data are generated from temperature and pressure measuring devices that are read automatically by a datalogger. Up to 100 channels can be scanned every 10 seconds and recorded on magnetic tape or printed as paper output. Time period of up to several years of data may be represented on a single tape.

Front-Tracking Model for Convective Transport in Flowing Ground Water

Abstract: This report describes a finite-difference numerical model that simulates the convective transport of water or tracer particles through porous media. It can be applied to one- or two-dimensional problems involving either steady-state or transient flow. The model tracks representative water or tracer particles, initially located along specified lines, as they move in response to the ground-water velocity field. Aquifer properties may be both anisotropic and nonhomogeneous. Included in the report is a listing of the program along with input formats and test problem results. The front-tracking model provides a useful first approximation for determining the movement of solutes in an aquifer, particularly in cases where dispersion and dilution is of minor consideration.

From introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey, at the request of the U.S. Air Force, began an investigation of geologic and hydrologic conditions at Wurtsmith Air Force Base in September 1979. The investigation was prompted by the discovery that an underground storage tank containing trichloroethylene (TCE) had leaked, contaminating Base water-supply wells. Subsequent information suggested that the trichloroethylene had moved off-Base.
