The purpose of this paper is to examine certain questions concerning infinite series. The first chapter introduces several basic definitions and theorems from calculus. In particular, this chapter contains the proofs for various convergence tests for series of real numbers. The second chapter deals primarily with the equivalence of absolute convergence, unconditional convergence, bounded multiplier convergence, and c0 multiplier convergence for series of real numbers. Also included in this chapter is a proof that an unconditionally convergent series may be rearranged so that it converges to any real number desired. The third chapter contains a proof of the Silverman-Toeplitz Theorem together with several applications.

The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of determining the nature of the differences and relationships between self-reported levels of stress and job satisfaction of elementary and secondary school principals in a selected school support region. This research effort employed a co-relational design. A random sample of 100 elementary and 100 secondary school principals were selected to participate in the study, for which the response rate was 93 per cent. The principals were mailed the Morse Index of Employee Satisfaction and the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Part A, and asked to assess their own job satisfaction and stress levels.

The problem with which this study is concerned is that of determining the specific stated factors that influenced Nigerian adults to participate in adult basic educational programs of the Nigerian Baptist Convention which lead to the first-school-leaving-certificate. The purpose of the study was to identify and examine the factors that influence Nigerian adults to participate in the adult basic and certificate educational programs of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, and to make recommendations for program improvements based on these findings. The data for this study were collected from questionnaires which included demographic information about the participants and a list of reasons for educational participation and needs-met statements. Questionnaire items were rated on a five-point scale. The researcher mailed 600 questionnaires to both adult basic and certificate education students in the adult education programs of the Nigerian Baptist Convention in Ibadan, Nigeria. The basic education group responded to 126 questionnaires, while the certificate groups responded to 122 questionnaires.

This study deals with the (4+2)-cycloaddition reactions of 4-π electron compounds with ketenes. Chloroketenes were generated in situ from the corresponding chlorinated acid chlorides in the presence of the ketenophiles. Chloro-, dichloro- and diphenylketenes reacted with 1-methoxy-3-trimethylsiloxy-l,3-butadiene, and 2,4-bis(trimethylsiloxy)-1,3-pentadiene to yield the corresponding dihydropyrans. The dihydropyrans yielded substituted 4-pyranones on hydrolysis.

Separation of the pigment-lipid esters of Xanthomonas juglandis (campestris) in a silica gel G:celite 545 column yielded 4 bands. Two of these bands, ester #1 and #2, make up over 95% of the mixture. Analysis of the four pigments indicate that three are phospholipids and that the phosphate accounts for about 3-4% of the weight of each of the two major esters.

James Hook was employed as organist, composer and music director at Vauxhall Gardens in London for forty-six years, from 1774-1820. He was preceded in that position by Thomas Arne, a composer better known to musicians of the twentieth century. Hook had an enormous output including over 2000 songs, most of which were intended for performance at the gardens. Many of these songs were popular enough to be published in New York, Baltimore, and Philadelphia, as well as London. These songs are generally in the lightly textured gallant style popularized in England most notably by J.C. Bach.

The general purpose of the study was to determine, analyze, and evaluate the basic nature of the distribution processes involved in the marketing of antique furniture in Dallas, Texas. The study utilizes the marketing mix components as a framework for understanding the nature of the industry. Various aspects of the channels of distribution and physical distribution, the products themselves, pricing mechanisms, and the promotion methods, as well as the market itself and distribution problems, were examined. The primary data were gathered from 29 retail antiques dealers in the Dallas metropolitan area.

This study analyzed The Children's Hour, The Little Foxes, Watch on the Rhine, Toys in the Attic in terms of the forms of human love delineated by Erich Fromm in The Art of Loving. The motives and actions of one or more principal characters and their dramatic situations were studied. It was discovered that, in the plays that were examined, each character responded to his or her situation in a loving or a hateful manner and that these choices with regard to love provided the dramatic matrix of the play.

The purpose of this thesis has been to prepare a group interpretation script based on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and its major manned programs. The script is designed to inform high school students and the general public of the space program. Available literature on oral interpretation and readers theatre have been investigated with particular attention given to the value of readers theatre as a means of instruction. Questionnaires were circulated among aerospace professors throughout the country and companies involved in the space industry. In their responses, aerospace company officials indicate strong support of this thesis and indicate a pressing need for such an informative script.

I developed twenty-three stains to use in low-temperature salt firing for my work. The stains that i made were compared to the commercially made stains to determine the similarities and differences. I felt that after much experimentation using a variety of different oxides in different amounts and calcining these amounts together in an electric kiln (heating the oxides up to about 1733 degrees Fahrenheit) that I was able to produce stable and consistent stains.

Variations Concerto is a work for large orchestra and solo trumpet of approximately sixteen minutes duration. The work is scored for piccolo, flute, two oboes (one doubling English horn), two clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat, two bassoons, four horns in F, three trumpets in B-flat, two trombones, bass trombone, tuba, timpani, percussion, piano, the solo trumpet in C, and strings. The large percussion battery includes glockenspiel, xylophone, chimes, vibraphone, four graduated wood blocks, four graduated triangles, temple blocks, four high toms, finger cymbals, four wood drums, four automobile brake drums, five medium toms, four low toms, four graduated suspended cymbals, snare drum, and four graduated metal pipes.

The problem of this study was an analysis of an individual study instructional approach of teaching mathematical concepts as they relate to business needs. The purposes were as follow: (1) to identify mathematical competencies required by business firms; (2) to further validate CVAE materials; (3) to evaluate the achievement of vocational office education students using programmed materials to review business mathematics; and (4) to develop, present, and describe a teaching model for these applications.

One purpose of the dissertation was to determine what theoretical justification exists to support the description of problem recognition. Homeostatsis was found to be a well documented and accepted theory of tension reduction in both physiology and psychology. It was proposed as a proper theoretical foundation for problem recognition. It also implied that people develop styles as they repeatedly deal with similar problems. Another purpose of the dissertation was to develop a method for typifying consumers in the way they recognize problems. Scales were constructed to measure consumers' tendencies to recognize problems due to a change in one of their states. Three scales were developed: one to measure types sensitive to changes in the desired state, one to measure types sensitive to changes in the actual state, and a combined scale to measure tendencies to recognize problems due to changes in either state. The product category chosen to test the scales was clothing. The results indicated that all scales were extremely reliable and moderately valid.

Kami is a two-movement composition for chamber orchestra. It is scored for two flutes; two Bb clarinets; bassoon; two F horns; Bb trumpet; bass trombone; a percussion section consisting of two performers alternating on triangle, suspended cymbal, three toms (low, medium, high), two timpani, and xylophone; piano; harp; and strings. The movements are approximately five and six minutes in duration, respectively, with a total duration of approximately eleven minutes. The title, Kami, is taken from the Japanese word for "god," and is meant to convey a sense of otherworldliness. This piece is intended as a fantasy for chamber orchestra, merging eastern and western musical influences.

Among the early applications of computers, one can find frequent mention of intelligent instructional systems. Such intelligent instructional systems represent a new generation of learner-based computer aided instruction, preceded in time by the original frame-based systems and an intervening generation of expert-based CAI. The history of CAI is characterized by three generations: Frame-based CAI, Expert-based CAI and Learner-based CAI.

Short-to-medium projections were made of student semester credit hour enrollments for North Texas State University and the Texas Public and Senior Colleges and Universities (as defined by the Coordinating Board, Texas College and University System). Undergraduate, Graduate, Doctorate, Total, Education, Liberal Arts, and Business enrollments were projected. Fall + Spring, Fall, Summer I + Summer II, Summer I were time periods for which projections were made. A new regression analysis called "cycle regression" which employs nonlinear regression techniques to extract multifrequential phenomena from time-series data was employed for the analysis of the enrollment data. The heuristic steps employed in cycle regression analysis are similar to those used in fitting polynomial models. A trend line and one or more sin waves (cycles) are simultaneously estimated using a partial F test. The process of adding cycle(s) to the model continues until no more significant terms can be estimated.

The problem of this study was to determine the cognitive development sequence of music skills. This sequence was determined by finding the music skills level, the Piagetian developmental level, and the developmental art level for twelve students differing in reading ability and in the first through fourth grades.The students were individually tested, using Piaget's semi-clinical interview technique. The students were tested on seven Piagetian tasks, ten music tasks, and one art task. The validity was determined through the interview process. The examiner redirected questions until he was certain the subjects were responding from conviction. The reliability of the study was achieved through a test-retest procedure and impartial expert evaluation of the test sessions.

This study investigated older persons' perception of the negative impact of ill health, retirement, and widowhood in relation to the mobilization of relevant coping mechanisms. In addition, the relationship of coping mechanisms and dissatisfaction with current gender-role identity to seeking counseling was studied. A distributed questionnaire package provided demographic data as well as information pertaining to satisfaction in various areas of life, impact of live events, and coping style. Subjects were 54 males and 67 females aged 50 to 92. Safeguards were taken to ensure complete confidentiality and anonymity of response. Stepwise multiple regression (listwise deletion of data), multivariate and univariate analysis of variance and bivariate correlational analyses of the data were performed, suggesting that perception of negative impact of the events measured (ill health, widowhood, retirement) was related a) to employing numerous useful coping strategies, b) to low dyadic satisfaction, and c) to low life satisfaction. Analyses also suggested that variables which distinguished those in the sample who sought counseling were a) identity discrepancy (wherein Ideal exceeded Real) on the Masculine and Androgynous dimensions, b) employing fewer Coping with Health strategies, and c) employing more Coping with Retirement strategies. The dissertation consists of four recitals: three solo recitals and one lecture recital. The repertoire of all the programs contained both music written specifically for the trombone and transcriptions from various other instruments. The lecture recital, "J. s. Bach's Six Suites for Solo Violoncello, BWV 1007-1012? Their History and Problems of Transcription and Performance for the Trombone," was presented on June 20, 1983. The lecture was an attempt to illuminate the rationale and performance problems of transcribing the Bach 'cello suites to the modern tenor trombone with an F attachment and also to provide background information on the suites and the early solo emergence of the violoncello. The program included the performance of the Suite No. 2_ in d minor, BWV 1008, with the movements: Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Minuets I and II, and Gigue.

The basis of this investigation is to characterize growth property differences in normal versus virally transformed cells. Using a temperature-sensitive mutant of Rous sarcoma virus, the cells' transformation state is regulated by the growth temperature; at 33°C the cells are transformed, while at 39°C the cells have normal characteristics. The morphology of NRK cells is elongated and fibroblastic; when transformed the cells are rounded. Normal cells grow to a monolayer and stop, while transformed cells grow to saturation densities greater than just a monolayer amount. Transformed cells can form foci when grown in mixture with normal cells. Normal cells must be in contact with the culture vessel in order to grow, but transformed cells lack anchorage dependence for growth.

The overt teaching of the Monitor, or conscious rule awareness, to native Spanish-speaking ESL students was examined to note possible benefits to the students' oral English production. Native Spanish-speaking students of English (the experimental group) were taught an awareness of their ability to self-correct their spoken English. They were then compared to another group of native Spanish-speaking ESL students (the control group) in four areas: Ilyin Oral Interview score, total words produced, errors produced, and interference errors produced. The results of the study lend support to the theory that overt Monitor teaching could be beneficial to native Spanish-speaking students of English. The experimental group showed a significant gain in Ilyin scores and a significant reduction in the number of errors produced.

The influence of Martin Luther on the Idealist philosophy and historical writing of Johann Gottfried Herder and Leopold Ranke Is part of a broader inquiry into the significant impact of the Protestant Reformation on the modern Western world. Herder and Ranke, whose work In historical research and writing spanned a period from the later eighteenth century to the close of the nineteenth century, represented an Idealist generation which sought a new meaning in human history to replace the view of the Enlightenment.

This study investigated the relationship between the degree of involvement with video games of 72 male university students with performance on pilot screening tests of psychomotor abilities, perceptual abilities, and cognitive style, and also with several personological variables, school performance, locus of control, sociability, and social presence. Additionally, the effects of experience with a video game on the learning of perceptual and psychomotor skills was examined for different levels of previous computer game involvement. It was found that those students who began playing at earlier ages and who more recently played the most demonstrated increased psychomotor abilities, and those abilities appeared to be enhanced by video game play. Greater amounts of time per week spent with computer games were found to correlate with increased facility in learning perceptual skills on computerized instrumentation, and with relative underachievement in school. No systematic relationship was found between degree of video game involvement and measures of sociability, social presence, and field dependence-independence. The study concluded that computer games may have effects upon those individuals who play them, but the effects may not be as negative as many people believe.
