Basic data for thermal springs and wells as recorded in GEOTHERM: Wyoming (open access)

Basic data for thermal springs and wells as recorded in GEOTHERM: Wyoming

GEOTHERM sample file contains 356 records for Wyoming. Three computer-generated indexes are found in appendices A, B, and C of this report. The indexes give one line summaries of each GEOTHERM record describing the chemistry of geothermal springs and wells in the sample file for Wyoming. Each index is sorted by different variables to assist the user in locating geothermal records describing specific sites. Appendix A is sorted by the county name and the name of the source. Also given are latitude, longitude (both use decimal minutes), township, range, section, GEOTHERM record identifier, and temperature (/sup 0/C). Appendix B is sorted by county, township, range, and section. Also given are name of source, GEOTHERM record identifier, and temperature (/sup 0/C). Appendix C is first sorted into one-degree blocks by latitude, and longitude, and then by name of source. Adjacent one-degree blocks which are published as a 1:250,000 map are combined under the appropriate map name. Also given are GEOTHERM record identifier, and temperature (/sup 0/C). A bibliography is given in Appendix D.

Mathematical simulation of contaminant distribution in and around the uranium mill tailing piles, Riverton, Wyoming (open access)

Mathematical simulation of contaminant distribution in and around the uranium mill tailing piles, Riverton, Wyoming

As part of the Research and Development phase of the Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) program, the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL) has set itself the goal of explaining the physico-chemical evolution of the Riverton site on the basis of the already collected field data at the site (Tokunaga and Narasimhan, 1982, Smith and Moed, 1982; White et al., 1984). The predictive aspects as well as addressing the question of critical quantity of field data have to be considered during the design phase of the project as a joint effort between the LBL team and the construction engineers. At the present time, LBL is in the process of completing the Research and Development phase of the work. As of this writing, the development of an appropriate set of mathematical models has been completed. The computations of the soil-water regime at the upper tailings surface, involving climatological factors is nearing completion. Computations of chemical transport are still in progress. This paper is devoted to a description of the key mathematical issues, the mathematical models that are needed to address these issues and a discussion of the model results pertaining to the soil water regime at the tailings-atmosphere interface. 11 references, 3 …

An Assessment of the Collection and Analysis of Hydrologic Data by Private Contractors for the U.S. Geological Survey (open access)

An Assessment of the Collection and Analysis of Hydrologic Data by Private Contractors for the U.S. Geological Survey

From abstract: During fiscal years 1978 through 1981, the U.S. Geological Survey contracted for the acquisition and analysis of hydrologic data from 104 surface water stations, 26 ground water stations, and 15 precipitation gages as well as for several hundred miscellaneous surface water measurements of flow and water quality. The work was performed in Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, terminating at the end of the fiscal year 1981. This report is an assessment of this contracting effort from the standpoint of cost and of quality control measures employed to ensure an acceptable product.

Reservoir Development Impacts on Surface-Water Quantity and Quality in the Yampa River Basin, Colorado and Wyoming (open access)

Reservoir Development Impacts on Surface-Water Quantity and Quality in the Yampa River Basin, Colorado and Wyoming

From introduction: This report describes the results of an investigation in which three computer models were used to evaluate different levels of the proposed reservoir development. One model simulated streamflow conditions with alternative multireservoir configurations; a second model simulated the dissolved-solids concentrations at various locations in the basin; and a third model used streamflows and dissolved solids concentrations to simulate the water-quality conditions within certain proposed reservoirs. This study was designed to demonstrate the application of computer-modeling techniques in evaluating impacts of proposed reservoirs.

Major Geochemical Processes Related to the Hydrology of the Madison Aquifer System and Associated Rocks in Parts of Montana, South Dakota, and Wyoming

From introduction: The overall purpose of this study were twofold: (1) To determine where greatest yielding wells at shallowest depths would produce water of suitable quality for municipal and industrial supplies; and (2) to determine regional effects of additional water development on the hydrologic system.

Digital Model of the Bates Creek Alluvial Aquifer Near Casper, Wyoming (open access)

Digital Model of the Bates Creek Alluvial Aquifer Near Casper, Wyoming

From abstract: "A digital model was used to simulate ground-water flow within the Bates Creek alluvial aquifer, southwest of Casper, Wyoming. Hydrologic data was collected during 1977 and 1978 were used to develop the flow model under steady-state and transient. Three scenarios for operating the stream-aquifer system were evaluated with the digital model." It contains maps, graphs, and tables.

Hydrologic Conditions in the Wheatland Flats Area, Platte County, Wyoming (open access)

Hydrologic Conditions in the Wheatland Flats Area, Platte County, Wyoming

Purpose and scope: The purpose of this investigation was to: (1) Determine the extent of present ground-water development for irrigation, industrial, and municipal use and describe the effect of this development on water levels in the separate aquifers; and (2) determine the net result of imported surface water and pumpage on water levels and stream discharge in the area.

Hydrologic Evaluation of Proposed Ground-Water Withdrawals in Muleshoe Flat Near Wheatland, Southeastern Wyoming (open access)

Hydrologic Evaluation of Proposed Ground-Water Withdrawals in Muleshoe Flat Near Wheatland, Southeastern Wyoming

From purpose and scope: This study estimates the time and spatial distribution of ground-water-level declines and streamflow depletions that may have been expected to occur within the vicinity of Muleshoe Flat as a result of the proposed irrigation development. A hydrogeologic reconnaissance of the study area was undertaken to define the ground-water-flow system and to collect pertinent hydrologic and geologic data.

Plan of Study for the Regional Aquifer Systems Analysis of the Upper Colorado River Basin in Colorado, Utah, Wyomingm and Arizona (open access)

Plan of Study for the Regional Aquifer Systems Analysis of the Upper Colorado River Basin in Colorado, Utah, Wyomingm and Arizona

Abstract: Water shortages are expected in the Upper Colorado River Basin because of increasing water demands for various uses. Ground-water supplies can help to reduce water shortages but ground-water reservoirs have not been studied in detail. The regional aquifer systems analysis of the Upper Colorado River Basin is a study of the major ground-water resources of the region. Aquifers occur in the sedimentary rock sequences in basins and uplifted regions, in volcanic-rock regions, and in stream-valley alluvium. The project work will include collection and compilation of existing geologic, geophysical, hydrologic, and geochemical data. These data will be used to assess the hydrologic characteristics of the aquifer systems and to estimate the hydrologic effects of discharge from, or recharge to, selected aquifers.
