Geothermal-resource assessment of Ranger Warm Spring, Colorado. (open access)

Geothermal-resource assessment of Ranger Warm Spring, Colorado.

In 1977 a program was initiated to delineate the geological features controlling the occurrence of geothermal resources in Colorado. This program consisted of literature search, reconnaissance geologic and hydrogeologic mapping and geophysical and geochemical surveys. During 1980 and 1981 geothermal resource assessment efforts were conducted in the Cement Creek Valley south of Crested Butte. In this valley are two warm springs, Cement Creek and Ranger, about 4 mi (6.4 km) apart. The temperature of both springs is 77 to 79/sup 0/F (25 to 26/sup 0/C) and the discharge ranges from 60 to 195 gallons per minute. Due to access problems no work was conducted in the Cement Creek Warm Springs area. At Ranger Warm Springs electrical resistivity and soil mercury surveys were conducted. The warm springs are located in the Elk Mountains of west central Colorado. The bedrock of the area consists of sedimentary rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to Recent. Several faults with displacements of up to 3000 ft (194 m) are found in the area. One of these faults passes close to the Ranger Warm Springs. The electrical resistivity survey indicated that the waters of Ranger Warm Springs are moving up along a buried fault which parallels …

Colorado: basic data for thermal springs and wells as recorded in GEOTHERM (open access)

Colorado: basic data for thermal springs and wells as recorded in GEOTHERM

GEOTHERM sample file contains 225 records for Colorado. Three computer-generated indexes are found in appendices A, B, and C of this report. The indexes give one line summaries of each GEOTHERM record describing the chemistry of geothermal springs and wells in the sample file for Colorado. Each index is sorted by different variables to assist the user in locating geothermal records describing specific sites. Appendix A is sorted by the county name and the name of the source. Also given are latitude, longitude (both use decimal minutes), township, range, section, GEOTHERM record identifier, and temperature (/sup 0/C). Appendix B is sorted by county, township, range, and section. Also given are name of source, GEOTHERM record identifier, and temperature (/sup 0/C). Appendix C is first sorted into one-degree blocks by latitude, and longitude, and then by name of source. Adjacent one-degree blocks which are published as a 1:250,000 map are combined under the appropriate map name. Also given are GEOTHERM record identifier, and temperature (/sup 0/C). A bibliography is given in Appendix D.

Investigation of the Pathway of Contaminated Soil Transported to Plant Surfaces by Raindrop Splash (open access)

Investigation of the Pathway of Contaminated Soil Transported to Plant Surfaces by Raindrop Splash

The environmental transport pathway of soil-borne radioisotopes to vegetation surfaces via raindrop splash was studied. The data show that soil can significantly contribute to the contamination found on plants. Further detailed study is needed to calculate the rate constant for the raindrop splash and retention pathways. 8 references, 1 figure. (ACR)

Reservoir Evaporation in Central Colorado

Purpose of study and report: This study is the result of an agreement between the Denver Water Department and the U.S. Geological Survey to investigate the evaporative losses from reservoirs which are a part of the Denver water-supply system. Interim results of the study were presented by Ficke and others (1977). The subject report is a continuation of results given by Ficke and others (1977).

Simulated Effects of Anticipated Coal Mining on Dissolved Solids in Selected Tributaries of the Yampa River, Northwestern Colorado (open access)

Simulated Effects of Anticipated Coal Mining on Dissolved Solids in Selected Tributaries of the Yampa River, Northwestern Colorado

From introduction: The overall objective of this report is to determine the cumulative effects of mining on dissolved solids in the Yampa River basin. more specifically the approach is (1) to develop a model of streamflow and dissolved solids focused on the Trout Creek drainage and a reach of the Yampa River main stem; (2) to calibrate this model with existing data; (3) to insert into the model future mine plans as given by the Mined Land Reclamation Division to determine cumulative effects of mining on dissolved solids in the streamflow.

Ground-Water Potential of the Leadville Limestone on the White River Uplift in Garfield and Rio Blanco Counties, Colorado (open access)

Ground-Water Potential of the Leadville Limestone on the White River Uplift in Garfield and Rio Blanco Counties, Colorado

Purpose and scope: This report describes a preliminary reconnaissance of the water-bearing properties of the Mississippian Leadville Limestone in the western part of the White River Uplift (synonymous with the White River Plateau). The purpose of this preliminary investigation is to determine areas of the Leadville Limestone suitable for exploratory drilling and testing at relatively shallow depths to confirm the quality of water in storage.

A Reconnaissance of Ground-Water Contamination at Selected Landfills in Colorado (open access)

A Reconnaissance of Ground-Water Contamination at Selected Landfills in Colorado

Abstract: A reconnaissance study of eight landfills in Colorado shows that they have contaminated the shallow ground-water system. Contamination is indicated by values of specific conductance and concentrations of major ions and trace elements. Because only shallow ground water was sampled, it was not possible to determine whether deeper ground-water systems also are contaminated. The major effects on water quality caused by contaminants in the land-fills were increased salinity, nitrogen, iron, manganese, and phenols in the shallow ground-water system.

Reservoir Development Impacts on Surface-Water Quantity and Quality in the Yampa River Basin, Colorado and Wyoming (open access)

Reservoir Development Impacts on Surface-Water Quantity and Quality in the Yampa River Basin, Colorado and Wyoming

From introduction: This report describes the results of an investigation in which three computer models were used to evaluate different levels of the proposed reservoir development. One model simulated streamflow conditions with alternative multireservoir configurations; a second model simulated the dissolved-solids concentrations at various locations in the basin; and a third model used streamflows and dissolved solids concentrations to simulate the water-quality conditions within certain proposed reservoirs. This study was designed to demonstrate the application of computer-modeling techniques in evaluating impacts of proposed reservoirs.

Quality-Assurance Data for Routine Water Analysis in the Laboratories of the U.S. Geological Survey: 1981 Annual Report (open access)

Quality-Assurance Data for Routine Water Analysis in the Laboratories of the U.S. Geological Survey: 1981 Annual Report

Abstract: The U.S. Geological Survey maintains a quality-assurance program based on the analysis of reference samples for its two water-analysis laboratories located in Atlanta, Georgia, and Denver, Colorado. Reference samples containing inorganic constituents are prepared at the U.S. Geological Survey's Ocala, Florida office and disguised as routine samples, and sent daily to each laboratory through other U.S. Geological Survey offices. The results are permanently stored in the National Water Data Storage and Retrieval System (WATSTORE), the U.S. Geological Survey's data base for all water data. These data are analyzed statistically for precision and bias. The results of these statistical analyses are presented for data collected during the 1981 calendar year. In addition, one sample containing known concentrations chlorophyll a were analyzed in both laboratories, and these results also are presented.
