The Relationship of Depressive Attributional Style with Depression Following Failure of Natural Childbirth

Using the framework of the reformulated learned helplessness (RLH) model of depression, this study examined the nonachievement of self-expectations of primigravidas desiring natural childbirth in terms of their attributional style and the possible resulting depression. The RLH model predicts that individuals who have a depressive attributional style experience a sense of helplessness when faced with situations which seem difficult or out of their control and are more apt to fail and become depressed. Natural childbirth is an experience which has the potential of appearing out of control to women involved in the birth process. Using a before and after design, the study was based on a sample of forty-one married primiparas who had an uncomplicated pregnancy, attended Lamaze childbirth classes, and anticipated an uncomplicated, unmedicated vaginal delivery. Sixteen subjects stated they did not meet their self-expectations during childbirth and twenty-five stated they did meet their self-expectations. The hypothesis were tested using two matched groups of sixteen each. Data from all subjects were used for post hoc analysis of the hospital data.

Separation-Individuation in Female Adult Development

This study examined separation—individuation developmental issues for young adult women, from the perspective of object-relations theory. Its purpose was to explore a woman's perception of her relationship with mother as it is affected by age and request for psychotherapy as well as the relationship between the mother-daughter bond and selfreported personality characteristics. Ninety-six women from 17 to 40 years of age volunteered to participate, and they were grouped into two age ranges. Life Stage 1 women were 17-22 years of age, while Life Stage 2 women ranged from 23-40. Within each Life Stage, the women were further categorized into clinical and non-clinical groups. All of the participants were college students and/or working women from clerical, managerial, and professional occupations who were recruited from their respective schools, jobs and outpatient clinics. Each woman completed the test packet which included a demographic data questionnare; the Identity vis-a-vis Mother Questionnaie (IVM-20) developed by Crastnopol (1980); the Clinical Analysis Questionnaire (CAQ) and Rotter1s Locus of Control Scale. The IVM-20 contains four scales, each designed to measure a unique mother-daughter relationship: Individuated (Ind), Symbiosis (Syra), Practicing (Prac) and Distancing (Dist). The research problem was to develop a comprehensive, descriptive profile on full-time sociology faculty employed by public community colleges in the State of Texas in terms of demographic characteristics, academic and professional preparation, and teaching and other professional practices. A forty-three item questionnaire was sent to the population under investigation. By November of 1982, eightytwo (80.4 percent) of the 102 instructors contacted had responded.

The problem of this study was to determine the academic, personal, social, and financial level of satisfaction of the international students at North Texas State University. The subjects were 351 international students representing fifty-four different countries. These students were enrolled full time during the fall semester of 1981. The instrument used to gather the data was a questionnaire. The questionnaire was validated by a panel of experts and pretested on a small sample of international students.

A Study of the Relationships Between Leader Behavior of Private Secondary School Principals and Teacher Morale in Bangkok, Thailand

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between principals' leader behavior and teacher morale in the private secondary schools of Bangkok, Thailand. This study also determined whether significant relationships based upon the factors of age, sex, educational level, years of teaching experience, salary, and size of school existed between the morale of teachers and their perceptions of the principals' leader behavior. The sample of the study was comprised of 400 teachers in private"secondary schools in Bangkok, Thailand. Each teacher was asked to complete the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire (PTO), an instrument designed an instrument designed to identify a principal's leader behavior which consists of two dimensions: initiating structure and consideration. Of the 400 returned questionnaires, 399 were usable. The statistical treatments applied to the data thus obtained included the Pearson product moment, Multiple regression, and Canonical correlation. A .05 level of significance was the criterion for accepting or rejecting each hypothesis.

Vaginal Pulse Amplitude in Low- and High-Arousability Females During Erotic Stimuli Conditions and Sleep

Vaginal photoplethysmography was utilized in combination with standardized sleep-recording procedures to investigate changes in vaginal pulse amplitude (VPA) during both waking and sleeping conditions in low- and high-arousability females (n = 10 per group), as classified by the Sexual Arousability Inventory. Based upon previous research, it was predicted that both groups would exhibit similar mean levels of VPA during waking exposure to erotic stimuli and during various stages of sleep. Despite hypothesized physiological similarities between groups, the low-arousability group was expected to subjectively report less arousal during the waking erotic conditions.

This study investigated the predictive value of time on-task and error scores on tests administered through Control Data Corporation PLATO interactive computer graphics simulation as predictors of errors and time on-task for inertial navigation system equipment operation. In addition, the correlation between simulated pass/fail error and time on-task scores, and subsequent pass/fail criteria using actual equipment was investigated.
