An Investigation of the Use of a Torch with Ceramic Materials (open access)

An Investigation of the Use of a Torch with Ceramic Materials

This report documents the changes in my work as a ceramic artist over a two-year period, imposed upon, and inspired by, the use of a propane torch on the surface of the clay vessel. The purpose of this study is two-fold: (1) to provide information about this particular tool for methods of survace decoration; (2) to provide information about a subjective thought process directed by properties in this particular tool.

Exploring the Distinction Between a Two-Dimensional and a Three-Dimensional Reality (open access)

Exploring the Distinction Between a Two-Dimensional and a Three-Dimensional Reality

Two ways of apprehending reality were intimated; reality as a function of purely visual stimuli and reality as a substantial object. The problem was, therefore, an exploration of reality as a purely visual sense and reality as concrete form. In pursuing the project, I explored how each reality distinguished itself by separating each in the prior conception of the work and in the subsequent discussion.

Textile Constructions and their Affect on Personal Imagery (open access)

Textile Constructions and their Affect on Personal Imagery

The problem was to combine yarns and fabrics, through various textile processes, (off-loom and on-loom techniques may be incorporated), that involve a personal dimension and an aesthetic value. The specific questions to be examined were the following: 1. How are successful textural surfaces achieved? 2. What kinds of interdependence among color, surface texture, and imagery exist? 3. How foes scale affect the works? 4. In what ways are autobiographical images compatible with the processes?

A Musical/Visual Performance: "A Cat on the Piano" (open access)

A Musical/Visual Performance: "A Cat on the Piano"

In the visual arts, I was interested in creating patterns with clay, glass, and metal, utilizing the visual elements (line, color, shape and texture). I arranged, rearranged, and distorted the elements until I obtained a fragmented, yet, unified pattern. My visual ideas were rhythmical (gestural) in nature with or without the direct stimulus of music. Concepts originated in my mind with symbols and sounds simultaneously.

Formulating Stains for use in 08 Temperature Salt Firing (open access)

Formulating Stains for use in 08 Temperature Salt Firing

I developed twenty-three stains to use in low-temperature salt firing for my work. The stains that i made were compared to the commercially made stains to determine the similarities and differences. I felt that after much experimentation using a variety of different oxides in different amounts and calcining these amounts together in an electric kiln (heating the oxides up to about 1733 degrees Fahrenheit) that I was able to produce stable and consistent stains.

The Synthesis of a Image Vocabulary Using Found Objects as a Primary Source for Abstraction (open access)

The Synthesis of a Image Vocabulary Using Found Objects as a Primary Source for Abstraction

The synthesis of mechanical/organic abstracted forms with suggestive power and specific purpose are elements i decided to continue to explore. I wished to make a more careful and systematic analysis of how something man-made could be transformed into a quasi-mechanical abstraction, perhaps a process similar to that in the Mayan art. The purpose of this project was: (1) to analyze how the shapes and forms arise in my abstract images and (2) to devise specific functions for them within the context of the final form.

Images as Metaphors for Desire (open access)

Images as Metaphors for Desire

To determine the effectiveness of the combinations of images as metaphors for desire I asked the following questions during the course of my exploration: 1. On what basis were the objects chosen? 2. What are the relationships between and among the images in the paintings? 3. How do these relationships constitute a metaphor for desire? 4. What visual devices influence the relationships between the images?

Order and Disorder in my Sculpture and Painting (open access)

Order and Disorder in my Sculpture and Painting

For this project, I explored the relationship of order and disorder within ten pieces of mixed media works. For the purpose of this paper, "order" is defined as the unity of all parts and details of a whole, standing in their proper relationship, each playing its own role without interfering with the functions of any other part. "Disorder is a force or combination of forces that unsettles or disarranges.

The Status and Content of Middle/Junior High School Art Programs in Texas

The purpose of this study was to examine the status and the content of the middle/junior high school art- programs in Texas. A questionnaire designed to elicit information concerning the art program was sent to middle/junior high school art teachers in Texas. The responses were analyzed according to the school district size, the grades comprising the school, and the school enrollment using simple descriptive statistics. This study revealed the following areas concerning the typical middle/junior high school art program in Texas: school district size, school enrollment, art enrollment, grades in school, types of art courses, teaching objectives and approaches, art budget, resource materials, and art equipment.

Clothing Derived From Lepidoptera Forms (open access)

Clothing Derived From Lepidoptera Forms

Each design attempted to fulfill three requirements. The design should be effective as displayed in an exhibition; it should retain its sculptural effect when worn; and it should convey a feeling of envelopment for the wearer. In addition to these requirements, the seven pieces were designed and constructed with four problems in mind. First, how did changes in media or technique effect each garment in terms of surface embellishment, drapability, et cetera? Second, how did the scale of a garment alter the medium or technique used and the pattern shape used? Third, what were the design limitations of both the folded rectangle construction and the wing-sleeve design with triangular pattern shapes? Fourth, were some designs more successful than others in creating an envelopment for the body?

Handmade Paper as an Artistic Medium (open access)

Handmade Paper as an Artistic Medium

The purpose of this study was to bring a new conceptual quantitative balance to the existing elements in my work thereby establishing a new clarity. It was felt that the above accomplishment would bring about new worth; so that when my work was perceived it would have a greater impact upon the viewer. An expectant visual richness in the imagery would prove that it had been strengthened through simplification of the relationship of form to content. This new visual richness would bring about a new conceptual level to the work, because it had been synthesized into a meaningful statement.

An Analysis of an Environmental Performance with the use of Light and Projected Photographic Imagery (open access)

An Analysis of an Environmental Performance with the use of Light and Projected Photographic Imagery

The primary objective of this creative project was to create an environmental performance through the use of light as the principal medium. Most of the photographic imagery had been completed. The remaining task involved creating an effective and workable system to integrate the projected imagery with the neon light placements. Each system, illustrated in the figures, attempted to create a different approach in using the light mediums.

The creation of Narrative Art Through the Combination of Visual and Verbal Images (open access)

The creation of Narrative Art Through the Combination of Visual and Verbal Images

This project was designed to afford me the opportunity to work with the possibility of combining painting and music through the creation of narrative art. I endeavored to produce a body of work in which the individual paintings and songs would also stand on their own as autonomous works, and still function as components of a work that was larger in scope. The challenge was to develop the visual and verbal elements into a unified whole.

The Transference of the Image (open access)

The Transference of the Image

I decided to simplify the composition of my work in subject matter, color, size and style without destroying its visual impact. Experimentation in surface quality gave variety to the simplified content. My main commitment to the accomplishment of this problem was to avoid complexity in any form. I wanted to give as much information as possible using minimal means.

The Chinese Tea Trade and Its Influence on the English Garden of the Eighteenth Century (open access)

The Chinese Tea Trade and Its Influence on the English Garden of the Eighteenth Century

The problem discusses the influence that tea trade between England and China may have had on eighteenth-century English garden architecture and aesthetics. Five chapters include an historical overview of non-Oriental influences on the garden, the relationship between Britain and China, the evolution of the tea trade, the motifs and decoration of tea wares, and a summary with conclusions. Conclusions reached were that tea was responsible for importation of porcelains in Britain, architectural structures in the garden were inspired by scenes on tea wares, predilection for Chinese motifs in the minds of the English may have resulted from their drinking tea, and it seems probable that affected garden aesthetics but there is no conclusive evidence.
