Production of antihyperons in the central region at the ISR. The axial field spectrometer collaboration

We present measurements of the relative production cross-sections of anti p, anti ..lambda.., anti ..xi.., and anti ..cap omega.. at y approx. 0 for 1 less than or equal to p/sub T/ less than or equal to 2 GeV/c in pp collisions at ..sqrt..s = 63 GeV. The results are compared with previous measurements of antibaryon production in hadronic and e/sup +/e/sup -/ collisions.

Properties of jets in high-E/sub T/ events produced in pp collisions at. sqrt. s = 63 GeV

The properties of jets in high-E/sub tau/ events produced in pp collisions at ..sqrt..s = 63 GeV have been studied at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The fragmentation of the jets is found to be similar to that of jets produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation. The jets are wider than calculated from a constituent scattering model with no hard bremsstrahlung component. The charge correlations of positive and negative particles show differences consistent with expectation from valence-quark scattering. 11 references.

The objective of the Energy Economic Data Base (EEDB) Program is to provide periodic updates of technical and cost (capital, fuel and operating and maintenance) information for nuclear and comparison electric power generating stations that is of significance to the US Department of Energy (USDOE). The purpose of this Reference Book is to provide the historical content of the EEDB through the Fourth Update (1981). It contains important descriptive and tutorial information concerning the structure and use of the EEDB. It also contains reports of work done to support various aspects of the first four updates, together with significant reference data developed during those updates. As a convenience to the user, it is intended that the Reference Book be sufficiently stable that revisions are required no more frequently than once every five years.

Evaluation of the Malvern optical particle monitor. [Volumetric size distribution]

The Malvern 2200/3300 Particle Sizer is a laser-based optical particle sizing device which utilizes the principle of Fraunhofer Diffraction as the means of particle size measurement. The instrument is designed to analyze particle sizes in the range of 1 to 1800 microns diameter through a selection of lenses for the receiving optics. It is not a single-particle counter but rather an ensemble averager over the distribution of particles present in the measuring volume. Through appropriate measurement techniques, the instrument can measure the volumetric size distribution of: solids in gas or liquid suspension; liquid droplets in gas or other immiscible liquids; and, gas bubbles in liquid. (Malvern Handbook, Version 1.5). This report details a limited laboratory evaluation of the Malvern system to determine its operational characteristics, limitations, and accuracy. This investigation focused on relatively small particles in the range of 5 to 150 microns. Primarily, well characterized particles of coal in a coal and water mixture were utilized, but a selection of naturally occurring, industrially generated, and standard samples (i.e., glass beads) wer also tested. Tunneling beyond the Fermilab site

An accelerator that crosses the Fermilab site boundary must have a minimum effect on the surrounding environment and the people residing in the area. Unobstructed public access should be allowed above the ring except in relatively few areas such as the injection, dump, and experimental regions. The accelerator should be a benign and unobtrusive neighbor not only when it is completed but also in the construction period. For these reasons underground tunneling for all or most of the ring seems attractive. In this note we look into some questions raised by tunneling beyond the Fermilab site. Most of our discussion is of general applicability. However, we will use as examples two specific ring configurations. The examples have not been optimized from the point of view of physics output or accelerator technology but are just specific examples which allow us to study questions of tunneling. One is a ring of 5 km radius (5 TeV) tangent to the Tevatron and entirely east of the Fox River and fed by a beam from the Tevatron which crosses under the river. Wake force computation in the time domain for long structures

One is often interested in calculating the wake potentials for short bunches in long structures using TBCI. For ultra-relativistic particles it is sufficient to solve for the fields only over a window containing the bunch and moving along with it. This technique reduces both the memory and the running time required by a factor that equals the ratio of the structure length to the window length. For example, for a bunch with sigma/sub z/ of one picosecond traversing a single SLAC cell this improvement factor is 15. It is thus possible to solve for the wakefields in very long structures: for a given problem, increasing the structure length will not change the memory required while only adding linearly to the CPU time needed.

Planar Channeling Radiation From Relativistic Positrons and Electrons in LiF

Channeling radiation has been measured for planar-channeled 54- and 83-MeV positrons and 17-, 31-, and 54-MeV electrons in the ionic crystal LiF. The results are shown to be in reasonable, but not perfect, agreement with the results of many-beam calculations based upon a model of the crystal as an array of isolated Li/sup +/ and F/sup -/ ions.

Dielectronic satellite spectra of hydrogen-like titanium (Ti XXII) (open access)

Dielectronic satellite spectra of hydrogen-like titanium (Ti XXII)

High resolution spectra of the Ly ..cap alpha../sub 1/ and Ly ..cap alpha../sub 2/ lines of hydrogenlike titanium, TiXXII, and the associated dielectronic satellites which are due to transitions 1snl-2pnl with n greater than or equal to 2, have been observed from tokamak discharges with auxiliary ion cyclotron heating (ICRH) with central electron temperatures of 2 keV and central electron densities of 8 x 10/sup 13/ cm/sup -3/ on the Princeton Large Torus (PLT). The data have been used for a detailed comparison with theoretical predictions based on the Z - expansion method and Hartree - Fock calculations. The results obtained with the Z - expansion method are in excellent agreement with the observed spectral data except for minor discrepancies between the theoretical and experimental wavelengths of 0.0003 A for the n = 2 satellites and of 0.0001 A for the separation of the Ly ..cap alpha../sub 1/ and Ly ..cap alpha../sub 2/ lines. Very good agreement with the experimental data is also obtained for the results from the Hartree - Fock calculations though somewhat larger discrepancies (approx. = 0.0009 A) exist between experimental and theoretical wavelengths which are systematically too small.
