In the visual arts, I was interested in creating patterns with clay, glass, and metal, utilizing the visual elements (line, color, shape and texture). I arranged, rearranged, and distorted the elements until I obtained a fragmented, yet, unified pattern. My visual ideas were rhythmical (gestural) in nature with or without the direct stimulus of music. Concepts originated in my mind with symbols and sounds simultaneously.

Formulating Stains for use in 08 Temperature Salt Firing

I developed twenty-three stains to use in low-temperature salt firing for my work. The stains that i made were compared to the commercially made stains to determine the similarities and differences. I felt that after much experimentation using a variety of different oxides in different amounts and calcining these amounts together in an electric kiln (heating the oxides up to about 1733 degrees Fahrenheit) that I was able to produce stable and consistent stains.

The synthesis of mechanical/organic abstracted forms with suggestive power and specific purpose are elements i decided to continue to explore. I wished to make a more careful and systematic analysis of how something man-made could be transformed into a quasi-mechanical abstraction, perhaps a process similar to that in the Mayan art. The purpose of this project was: (1) to analyze how the shapes and forms arise in my abstract images and (2) to devise specific functions for them within the context of the final form.

Clothing Derived From Lepidoptera Forms

Each design attempted to fulfill three requirements. The design should be effective as displayed in an exhibition; it should retain its sculptural effect when worn; and it should convey a feeling of envelopment for the wearer. In addition to these requirements, the seven pieces were designed and constructed with four problems in mind. First, how did changes in media or technique effect each garment in terms of surface embellishment, drapability, et cetera? Second, how did the scale of a garment alter the medium or technique used and the pattern shape used? Third, what were the design limitations of both the folded rectangle construction and the wing-sleeve design with triangular pattern shapes? Fourth, were some designs more successful than others in creating an envelopment for the body?

The purpose of this study was to bring a new conceptual quantitative balance to the existing elements in my work thereby establishing a new clarity. It was felt that the above accomplishment would bring about new worth; so that when my work was perceived it would have a greater impact upon the viewer. An expectant visual richness in the imagery would prove that it had been strengthened through simplification of the relationship of form to content. This new visual richness would bring about a new conceptual level to the work, because it had been synthesized into a meaningful statement.

The primary objective of this creative project was to create an environmental performance through the use of light as the principal medium. Most of the photographic imagery had been completed. The remaining task involved creating an effective and workable system to integrate the projected imagery with the neon light placements. Each system, illustrated in the figures, attempted to create a different approach in using the light mediums.

This is a report concerning the project I completed for my 590 (special problem) credit. The subject of this project was a system for interactive practice room scheduling by music students at NTSU. This system was created in the fall semester of 1982 as a class project for software Development (CSCI 553) with Dr. Irby. The system was not completely finished, and I received permission from Dr. Irby to finish it and help implement its use at the Music department. I was able to observe three usages of the system: Spring, Summer I, and Summer II semesters of 1983. This report details the problems encountered during each of these usages, and changes made to the system due to them. Results of a first-use survey, under documentation, and complete final code listings were also included.

Vaporization of synthetic fuels. Final report.

The problem of transient droplet vaporization in a hot convective environment is examined. The main objective of the present study is to develop an algorithm for the droplet vaporization which is simple enough to be feasibly incorporated into a complete spray combustion analysis and yet will also account for the important physics such as liquid-phase internal circulation, unsteady droplet heating and axisymmetric gas-phase convection. A simplified liquid-phase model has been obtained based on the assumption of the existence of a Hill's spherical vortex inside the droplet together with some approximations made in the governing diffusion equation. The use of the simplified model in a spray situation has also been examined. It has been found that droplet heating and vaporization are essentially unsteady and droplet temperature is nonuniform for a significant portion of its lifetime. It has also been found that the droplet vaporization characteristic can be quite sensitive to the particular liquid-phase and gas-phase models. The results of the various models are compared with the existing experimental data. Due to large scattering in the experimental measurements, particularly the droplet diameter, no definite conclusion can be drawn based on the experimental data. War Is Kind (open access)

War Is Kind

This composition is a single-movement work for three choirs and full orchestra, including celesta, piano, and four percussionists. Total duration is fifteen minutes. The music is divided into six sections, with the overall form being substantially influenced by the structure of the poem, War Is Kind, by Stephen Crane (1871-1900). Many devices are utilized to contrast tension and relaxation, as associated with ironic elements of the text, with repetition and development of musical elements and motives providing unity for the entire work.

In Morte Nobilis

In Morte Nobilis is a cantata for chamber orchestra and three vocal soloists, and is approximately seventeen minutes in duration. Each of the three movements features a different vocal soloists (soprano, baritone, or tenor) and each movement concerns a specific Christian martyr. Texts for In Morte Nobilis are extracted from the writings and biographies of the martyrs. Each text gives the listener some insight as to how each martyr faced their death with courage and unwavering faith. The music of In Morte Nobilis gives additional insight as to what these martyrs faced. This is accomplished through a building and release of tension and dissonance, as well as some use of non-standard vocal technique.

Polysonisisms is a one-movement work for symphonic wind ensemble and electronic tape of approximately eleven minutes' duration. The title conveys two ideas: many sounds and processes. Pitch use is based on a system for calculating the potential dissonance of four-note sets. From this system all linear and vertical pitch materials are derived.

Variations Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra

Variations Concerto is a work for large orchestra and solo trumpet of approximately sixteen minutes duration. The work is scored for piccolo, flute, two oboes (one doubling English horn), two clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat, two bassoons, four horns in F, three trumpets in B-flat, two trombones, bass trombone, tuba, timpani, percussion, piano, the solo trumpet in C, and strings. The large percussion battery includes glockenspiel, xylophone, chimes, vibraphone, four graduated wood blocks, four graduated triangles, temple blocks, four high toms, finger cymbals, four wood drums, four automobile brake drums, five medium toms, four low toms, four graduated suspended cymbals, snare drum, and four graduated metal pipes.

Music for Katurah

Music for Katurah is scored for string quartet, flute, alto flute, soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, piano, and two percussion with total duration of approximately nineteen minutes. The work has three movements and uses spatial as well as standard notation. Each movement begins softly, builds gradually to a highpoint, and returns to the soft beginning. Timbral exploration and improvisation are prominent features in this piece. Also, through the use of spatial and standard notation, the piece combines strict rhythms and free rhythms.
