Development of Bromine-77 from the LAMPF facility

The objective of the work is to conduct the necessary studies required to evaluate the efficacy, potential benefit and role of bromine-77 labelled steroids in the detection and evaluation of treatment for hormone-dependent tumors. The synthetic goals of 1982-3 included the synthesis estradiol derivatives which were radiohalogenated in the A- or C-ring with bromine-77 or bromine-82. Estradiol derivatives in which the radiohalogen was incorporated into the C-ring were prepared and purified with high specific activity. Biodistribution studies of the resultant compounds will be performed on rats in the near future. Various synthetic approaches toward estradiol which is radiohalogenated in the 1-position are discussed.

Technology transfer: Ion exchange resins for Technetium-99 removal from X-705 raffinates

An ion exchange process will be used at Portsmouth to remove Technetium-99 from uranium recovery waste solutions (raffinates). Subsequent treatment will then remove nitrates from the raffinates by a biodenitrification process prior to discharge to receiving streams to meet environmental standards for liquid wastes. Ion exchange process parameters affecting safe and efficient raffinate treatment have been examined in the laboratory, and results are described in this report. 4 refs., 3 figs., 6 tabs.

Gaussian-profile beams

The growth rate of the hose instability is derived for a beam with Gaussian radial profile, using the spread mass model of phase mix damping. It is found that the maximum growth rate of a convecting wave packet is 49% larger than that derived for a beam with the Bennett profile, and the inverse group velocity (dz/d tau) is also increased by about this amount. A general discussion of spread mass models is presented along with an explanation of the regurgitation phenomena seen in their numerical treatment.

Design and fabrication of the superconducting-magnet system for the Mirror Fusion Test Facility (MFTF-B)

The superconducting magnet system for the Mirror Fusion Test Facility (MFTF-B) consists of 24 magnets; i.e. two pairs of C-shaped Yin-Yang coils, four C-shaped transition coils, four solenoidal axicell coils, and a 12-solenoid central cell. General Dynamics Convair Division has designed all the coils and is responsible for fabricating 20 coils. The two Yin-Yang pairs (four coils) are being fabricated by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Since MFTF-B is not a magnet development program, but rather a major physics experiment critical to the mirror fusion program, the basic philosophy has been to use proven materials and analytical techniques wherever possible. The transition and axicell coils are currently being analyzed and designed, while fabrication is under way on the solenoid magnets.

Nonlinear aspects of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability in laser ablation

We report on our investigation of the Rayleigh-Taylor (R-T) and Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instabilities in laser ablatively accelerated targets for single mode perturbations for a series of wavelengths in the parameter regime 1/2 less than or equal to lambda/..delta..R less than or equal to 10, where lambda is the wavelength of the perturbation and ..delta..R is the cold foil thickness. We find linear growth rates well below classical values (by a factor on the order of 3 to 4). We also find a cutoff in the growth rates for wavelengths less than the foil thickness. The striking result is the dominance of nonlinear effects; i.e., the K-H instability, for short wavelength perturbations. Although the linear growth rates increase as k/sup 1/2/ up to the cutoff, the K-H rollup dominates at large k, drastically reducing the penetration rate of the dense spike below its free fall value and effectively doubling the aspect ratio of the foil. In other words, it is the long wavelength perturbations that are most effective in destroying the symmetric implosion of the shell.

Technology Development Facility (TDF)

We have been studying small, driven, magnetic-mirror-based fusion reactors for the Technology Development Facility (TDF), that will test fusion reactor materials, components, and subsystems. Magnetic mirror systems are particularly interesting for this application because of their inherent steady-state operation, potentially high neutron wall loading, and relatively small size. Our design is a tandem mirror device first described by Fowler and Logan, based on the physics of the TMX experiments at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The device produces 20 MW of fusion power with a first-wall, uncollided 14-MeV neutron flux of 1.4 MW/m/sup 2/ on an area of approximately 8 m/sup 2/, while consuming approximately 250 MW of electrical power. The work was done by a combined industrial-laboratory-university group.

Design guidance for fracture-critical components at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Fracture is an important design consideration for components whose sudden and catastrophic failure could result in a serious accident. Elements of fracture control and fracture mechanics design methods are reviewed. Design requirements, which are based on the consequences of fracture of a given component, are subsequently developed. Five categories of consequences are defined. Category I is the lowest risk, and relatively lenient design requirements are employed. Category V has the highest potential for injury, release of hazardous material, and damage. Correspondingly, the design requirements for these components are the most stringent. Environmental, loading, and material factors that can affect fracture safety are also discussed.

Exploratory drill hole UE2ce was drilled in January 1977 to determine geologic and geophysical characteristics of this site. This report presents geophysical logs, lithology, geologic structure, water table measurements, and physical properties for this drill hole. The data are then extrapolated to the NASH site, an event in U2ce, 55.6 m due north of UE2ce.

A process to photochemically remove tritium from heavy water has been described previously. Order-of-magnitude cost estimates for this process have been made, based on the specifications, assumptions, and parameters. The estimated costs of each unit and of the complete system are given. The total capital cost (excluding laser cost) of $650,000 corresponds to a cost of $0.08/Ci tritium removed, for plant amortization over one year. The electrical load is about 154 kW; this is equal to a cost of $0.01/Ci tritium removed (80% capacity factor, $0.05/kWh). Therefore the order-of-magnitude total cost of tritium removal is about $0.09/Ci. Experimental data on the D/sub 2/0/DTO/CDCl/sub 3/ system are needed to permit a detailed design of the exchange unit; the necessary experiments will soon be performed by a summer student. The stripper concept must also be better defined. With a good understanding of these units, the crucial parameters and tradeoffs can be identified and balanced in a final process design. The collaborative effort with the Savannah River Laboratory will help with process development, and will ensure that all Savannah River Plant requirements are met.

Explosive double salts and preparation. [Patent application]

A new composition of matter has been discovered which is an explosive addition compound of ammonium nitrate (AN) and diethylenetriamine trinitrate (DETN) in a 50:50 molar ratio. the compound is stable over extended periods of time only at temperatures higher than 46/sup 0/C, decomposing to a fine-grained eutectic mixture (which is also believed to be new) of AN and DETN at temperatures lower than 46/sup 0/C. The compound of the invention has an x-ray density of 1.61 g/cm/sup 3/, explodes to form essentially only gaseous products, has higher detonation properties (i.e., detonation velocity and pressure) than those of any mechanical mixture having the same density and composition as the compound of the invention, is a quite insensitive explosive material, can be cast at temperatures attainable by high pressure steam, and is prepared from inexpensive ingredients. Methods of preparing the compound and the fine-grained eutectic composition of the invention are given.

New prodrugs based on phospholipid-nucleoside conjugates

A method is described for the preparation of defined, isomerically pure phospholipid-nucleoside conjugates as a prodrug in which the drug (araC) is attached to the phospholipid by a monophosphate linkage. Key intermediates in the process involve selective blocking and deblocking of the nucleoside derivative. These particular monophosphate-linked derivatives represent a new class of prodrug, which are useful by themselves or in combination with diphosphate linked derivatives. Several new compositions involving diphosphate linked derivatives are described in which the products are isomerically pure and having defined fatty acid chain lengths.

Rhenium is recovered from an alloy containing that metal and either one or both of the metals molybdenum and tungsten by the following steps: (1) heating the alloy in the presence of O/sub 2/ to remove the Re from the alloy as gaseous Re/sub 2/O/sub 7/; (2) condensing the gaseous Re/sub 2/O/sub 7/; (3) dissolving the obtained solid Re/sub 2/O/sub 7/ in H/sub 2/O; (4) treating the solution of Re/sub 2/O/sub 7/ and H/sub 2/O with KCl to form KReO/sub 4/; and (5) heating the KReO/sub 4/ in the presence of H/sub 2/ to form Re.

This invention is directed to a process of generating silicon tetrafluoride (SiF/sub 4/) from aqueous solutions of hexafluorosilicic acid (H/sub 2/SiF/sub 6/), comprising reacting an aqueous solution of H/sub 2/SiF/sub 6/ with a concentrated aqueous salt solution to produce a precipitate, separating and drying the precipitate, and heating the precipitate in an inert atmosphere to decompose the precipitate producing SiF/sub 4/.
