Academic Governance: Perceptions and Preferences of Administrators and Faculty in a Public and in a Private University

The problem with which this study is concerned is the determination of the attitudes toward academic governance of administrators and faculty in both a public and a private institution of higher education in Texas. Based on the problem, a Likert-type survey instrument was developed from the questionnaire provided by the North Texas State University Task Force on University Governance; 176 academic administrators and faculty responded (60.5 per cent).

Adolescents' Attitudes Toward Mate Selection

This study investigated the attitudes of sixty-four adolescents who completed an instrument designed to measure attitudes toward factors which influence mate selection. The hypotheses examined attitudes toward mate selection and gender, socioeconomic status, educational goals, family structure, and preferred age at marriage. The data were analyzed by calculating percentages and mean scores. The analysis of data revealed that adolescents valued personality-oriented characteristics as the most important characteristics desired in a mate; males and females held different values for certain factors; adolescents from various socioeconomic levels held different values for certain factors; adolescents with different educational goals, and adolescents residing in various family structures held similar values for each factor; and adolescents with various preferences for age at marriage held different values for certain factors.

An Analysis of the Effect of the Match Between Applicants and Openings on Selected Unemployment Rates

The purpose of this study was to classify unemployment by clearly defined, objectively measured categories which produced a consistent, empirical model identifying the structure of unemployment in Texas during the period 1973 to 1978. The models employed univariate hierarchical regression of Texas montly unemployment rates and changes in unemployment rates on measures of seasonality, cyclical fluctuations, the match of qualified applicants to available openings, and the interaction of these terms. The results of these models were reported.

Arda

Arda is an instrumental chamber work scored for cello, percussion, and multiple keyboards with a total duration of approximately thirteen minutes. The work is structured in an arch form whose divisions are based on instrumental and textual groupings. The pitch organization utilizes prominent intervals, improvised passages on certain passages on certain pitches, and the double harmonic mode, which is derived from an Indian raga. Various instrumental techniques are also used throughout the work to alter timbres as well as to create more interesting vertical sonorities.

Biofeedback-Assisted Relaxation: Effects on Phagocytic Immune Functioning

Life events and one's ability to adapt to these events has significant effects on immune functioning. Immunosuppression has been related to a high magnitude of life stress and low adaptive ability. While studies have explored immune response in stressed individuals, no study has approached the area of prevention with low-immunity individuals. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether subjects who self-report stressful lives have lower immunity, and whether "low" immunity subjects under "high" stress could enhance phagocytic activity through biofeedback-assisted relaxation.

Birth Order and Maladaptive Behavior in School-Aged Children

This study investigated the relationship between maladaptive behavior, defined as referral to counseling, and the Adlerian construct of birth order. The birth order variables examined were ordinal position, sex of subject, family density, family size, socio-economic status, intactness of family, age of mother, and sex of sibling. The subjects in this study were 217 school-aged children with academic and/or behavior problems who were referred to an interdisciplinary guidance center. The subjects were assigned to counseling or no-counseling groups on the basis of an interdisciplinary evaluation and staffing, which included an extensive battery of academic and psychological tests.

Brainstem Lipids' Relationship to Death

Previous work relating postmortem findings with cause of death have focused on the vitreous portion of the body. This research investigated the link between phospholipids in the brainstem and cause of death. The lipids were extracted by the Folch extraction method and then separated by High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography. These techniques gave excellent separation and resolution. Results showed no link between cause of death and the type of lipids found in the brainstem after death.

Combination of Cognitive Group Therapy and Subliminal Stimulation in Treatment of Test-Anxious College Males

Silverman's technique of subliminal psychodynamic activation via tachistoscope has been demonstrated to facilitate competitive performance in college males when a sanctioned oedipal gratification fantasy stimulus is utilized. This effect is presumed to result from a decrease in unconscious neurotic conflict. The cognitive component of Meichenbaum's Cognitive Behavior-Modification has been shown effective in reducing test anxiety. This effect is presumed to stem from conscious identification and modification of negative self-statements. The hypothesis that a combination of the two approaches would prove more effective than the cognitive group therapy alone in reducing test anxiety was tested. Thirty-four test-anxious male students attended 10 sessions wherein they received subliminal stimulation and cognitive group therapy. Half of the students were presented active, and half neutral stimuli subliminally via tachistoscope. All received the cognitive group therapy. Therapists conducting the groups were blind to the hypothesis being tested and the assignment of subjects to experimental and control groups. Subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental conditions in order to control for group and therapist effects.

The Contest: A Ballet for Orchestra and Prepared Tape

The Contest is a ballet scored for orchestra and tape. It was composed in the tradition of dramatic orchestral ballets and sets the biblical story from 1 Kings, chapter 18, verses 20-40. Certain portions of the work were written using computer assisted compositional programs developed by the composer. These programs were written in the BASIC programming language. Other sections of the score were composed intuitively, using no computer programs. The tape for the last movement was prepared on the Synclavier II digital syntesizer using the Script system and the Synclavier II keyboard instrument.

Correlates of Perceived Computer Helplessness

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between computer experience and selected demographic variables to knowledge about computers; knowledge of computers, experience with computers and selected demographic variables and attitudes towards computers to perceived computer helplessness. The study utilized two samples. Questionnaires were hand delivered to 68 out of 81 students enrolled in recreation classes at North Texas State University and questionnaires were sent to 130 Dallas Park and Recreation professionals via their inter-department mail (115 surveys returned). The data analysis indicated that the knowledge, attitude, and helplessness scales were highly reliable. Regression analysis indicated that knowledge, experience, attitudes, sex, age, and occupation were significant predictors of helplessness.

This study determined the impact that test has had on the curricula of participating districts as was perceived by superintendents. A survey instrument was developed, validated, and tested for reliability and was then presented to a random sample of superintendents in five size categories.

Demographic and Social Psychological Factors Affecting Migration in Eight United States Cities

In this investigation, selected demographic and social psychological factors affecting migration within eight United States cities are examined. More specifically, the study examines migration in terms of previous neighborhood satisfaction, perceived initial attraction of present neighborhood, present neighborhood satisfaction, family life cycle, residence tenure, race, sex, income, and education. The data for this investigation are taken from the 1975 National Crime Survey Attitude Sub-Sample Files. Using length of residence to define migration status, 2,047 migrants and 1,928 non-migrants comprise the sample for this investigation. Zero-order and multiple correlation measures are utilized in the analysis of migration in terms of the previously mentioned variables.

Education Through Alienation: Elements of Gestaltist Learning Theory in Selected Plays of Bertolt Brecht

This study explored the relationship between the dramatic and the educational theories developed by Bertolt Brecht and selected twentieth-century theories of pedagogy. A survey of Brecht's life and works revealed that although the stimulus-response theories of the associationist psychologists were inappropriate to Brecht's concepts, the three principal aspects of Gestaltism—perception, insight, and life space, as formulated by Max Wertheimer, Kurt Koffka, Wolfgang Kohler, and Kurt Lewin—seemed profoundly related to Brecht's concern with man's ability to perceive and to learn about his environment. Brecht strove to create perceptual images of historical environments. The characters, who represented various ideologies and philosophies in situations which stimulated insightful learning, struggled with life spaces that accurately resembled life outside the theatre. Thus, Brecht utilized elements of the theories of perception, insight, and life space in his dramas as he strove to force his audiences to perceive the characters' environments, to grasp the significance and relationships between the characters' environments and their own social milieu, and to recognize those influences in one's life space which attract or repel the individual. The study also suggested that Brecht's works might be amenable to empirical study.

The Effect of an Adaptation of the Lozanov Method on Vocabulary Definition Retention

The purpose of the study was to determine if there is an effect on retention of vocabulary when music and imagery are used, to accelerate learning. As background for the study four brain functioning theories as developed from recent neuroscientific research were explored. These were the theory of right/left cerebral dominance (Sperry & others), triune brain theory (MacLean), taxon and locale long term memory (O'Keefe & Nadel), and holographic memory (Pribram). These four theories all suggest multiple channels of input will increase information retention. The research utilized three conditions: an experimental condition of music plus imagery, an experimental condition of music only, and a no treatment condition.

The Effect of Roughness Elements on the Magnus Characteristics of Rotating Spherical Projectiles

Thirty trials of each of three roughness conditions were examined. The first condition consisted of a baseball pitched so that two of the roughness elements opposed the flow. The second condition consisted of a pitched baseball with four of the roughness elements opposing the flow. The third consisted of a pitched uniformly rough sphere. The conclusions were that roughness elements increase horizontal flight deviations when a baseball rotates about a vertical axis; roughness elements on the surface of a baseball may cause a decrease in the encountered drag forces; linear velocity has a dominating effect on the trajectory of a spinning baseball; previously developed mathematical models do not adequately predict flight deviations.

The Effects of a High School Teaching Unit on Adolescent Self-Esteem

The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of a teaching unit for improving self-esteem in high school students. To measure the level of self-esteem, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was chosen. The data were compiled from twenty-one high school students in a rural Texas high school. The female level of self-esteem was significantly lower than the male self-esteem level prior to studying the class unit. There were no significant differences in levels of self-esteem on the pretest and post test, although there was a slight improvement in the female level.

Effects of Gender and Self-Monitoring on Observer Accuracy in Decoding Affect Displays

This study examined gender and self-monitoring as separate and interacting variables predicting judgmental accuracy on the part of observers of facial expressions of emotional categories. The main and interaction effects failed to reach significant levels during the preliminary analysis. However, post hoc analyses demonstrated a significant encoder sex variable. Female encoders of emotion were judged more accurately by both sexes. Additionally, when the stimulus was limited to female enactments of emotional categories, the hypothesized main and interaction effects reached significant F levels. This study utilized 100 observers and 10 encoders of seven emotional categories. Methodological considerations and alternatives are examined at length.

An Empirical Examination of the Relationship Between Audit Committees and the Displacement of Accounting Firms

The purpose of this research was to empirically examine the relationship between audit committees and the changing of independent accounting firms, especially those independent auditor changes in which accounting firms are displaced as auditors by accounting firms that are in the larger-sized category. This research involved the testing of two different, but closely related questions. The first research question asks, "Does the existence of an audit committee of a board of directors partially explain a company's decision to change independent accounting firms?" The second research question asks, "Does the existence of an audit committee of a board of directors partially explain a company's decision to change to a larger accounting firm rather than change to an accounting firm of equal or smaller size?" Statistical models were developed for the two research questions using criteria involved in the auditor change decisions as reported in previous research studies. Eight criterion, including the existence of an audit committee, were defined specifically and incorporated into a survey instrument. The survey instrument was circulated to the accounting firms in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Employee Attitudes Toward Shoplifting

The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes of retail sales personnel toward shoplifting as well as toward procedures and devices designed to minimize shoplifting. The study also sought to examine employees' recall of training in regard to shoplifting and its prevention. It was concluded that most of the employees are aware of the high cost of shoplifting to retail stores. The majority of the employees do not define shoplifting in terms of the value of the merchandise taken. Uniformed guards, locked display cases and electronic article surveillance devices were ranked high in terms of effectiveness as shoplifting prevention devices. The majority of employees reported they had received training to prevent shoplifting but also indicated they desired more training in certain areas.

Employee Perceptions of the Use of Corporate Fitness Programs in Recruitment

This study investigated how employees perceived corporate fitness programs as benefits, how fitness programs were ranked with other selected employee benefits and if they would be considered in future career opportunities. A questionnaire was given to employees from five companies with and five companies without fitness programs. The 452 Ss were subdivided into the two sub-groups of employees with and without company fitness programs, and high and low adherers to physical activity. Data were analyzed by Chi- Square and proportional differences. Fitness programs were considered to be significantly important benefits; high/low adherers responses were significant. In N rank ordering of eight selected benefits, fitness programs ranked seventh; high/low adherers had significant rankings of fitness programs; employees with and without fitness programs had significant rankings of sick leave time/pay. The N did not consider fitness programs as significant future recruitment tools; there were significant differences from responses of high/low adherers. Some companies did not emphasize fitness programs as important benefits to employees.

An Evaluation of the Business Education Program at Tarleton State University with Implications for Improvement

The purpose of this study was to (1) collect and examine data from graduates relating to the present status and effectiveness of the program and (2) compare the requirements of the program to the requirements of other institutions in Texas with NCATE accreditation. Two questionnaires were developed to obtain data from the graduates concerning four categories of information: personal information, occupational information, analysis of the effectiveness of the curriculum, and evaluation of the adequacy of the program. The colleges and universities in Texas with NCATE accreditation were sources of the following types of information: area offering and having responsibility for the business education program, AACSB and its effect on the business education program, certification options available, methods courses offered, and grade requirements for admission into and for graduation and certification from the program.
