Study of the hydrolysis of uranium hexafluoride by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (open access)

Study of the hydrolysis of uranium hexafluoride by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy

The reaction of uranium hexafluoride with water has been studied by using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Several different methods for accomplishing this task have been carried out. In addition, interpretatins of the results have been made. These interpretations have been based on literature values for the reactants and for compounds analogous to possible products. It was shown that classical matrix-isolation techniques proved to be unsatisfactory for studying this reaction. Other methods were developed in order to obtain results. They were: (1) the codeposition of pure UF/sub 6/ and H/sub 2/O on a cold window at 16/sup 0/K, (2) the codeposition of argon matrix to sample ratios of 10:1 to 2:1 of UF/sub 6/ and H/sub 2/O at 16/sup 0/K, and (3) the annealing of the samples produced by (1) and (2) while they were being scanned with FT-IR. 78 refs., 86 figs., 7 tabs.

Investigation of heat pump efficiencies using groundwater and/or ground coil in the Gulf Coast region. Final report (open access)

Investigation of heat pump efficiencies using groundwater and/or ground coil in the Gulf Coast region. Final report

This project examines the energy efficiencies of five different water source heat pump systems. This is further supported by an experimental effort in which an existing residence is retrofitted with a heat pump and other energy sources: well water as a heat source/sink, vertical geothermal well as heat source/heat sink/storage, horizontal buried metal and plastic ground coils to use as heat source/heat sink, and a solar assist system. The energy elements are operated individually and in combination configurations to determine performance, and cost effectiveness of the energy alternatives are explored.

Dynamic response of a thin disk subjected to a thermal pulse (open access)

Dynamic response of a thin disk subjected to a thermal pulse

The dynamic response of a thin steel disk to a transient thermal pulse induced by a pulsed neodymium-glass laser was studied experimentally and compared with numerical results from a finite element code. The experiment was designed to provide data for use in code development work for erosion/corrosion studies.

Conversion of administration buildings entry to a greenhouse. Final status report

A project is briefly described that was to convert an administration building's entry to a greenhouse. The plan calls for extra insulation, a Trombe wall, berming, and double-glazed window units. The social and economic benefits of the project and qualifications of key people are listed. (LEW)

Improved solid-state laser sources. Final technical report, 2 June 1981-1 June 1982

During the first program year we have demonstrated diffraction limited output of 600 mJ from an unstable resonator Nd:Glass slab geometry oscillator. We have investigated, in detail, slab geometry lasers and have verified by careful experiments all important predictions of the slab theory. To date we have generated 10 J of output energy at 2.5 Hz from a single multimode, non-Q-switched, slab oscillator at 3.5% storage efficiency, 2% slope efficiency and 1.6% extraction efficiency. We have doubled and Raman shifted the Q-switched 600 mJ slab glass oscillator. We have extended the slab concept to Nd:YAG. Preliminary measurements show that the slab geometry eliminates thermal focusing and stress induced birefringence in Nd:YAG. We have demonstrated the advantages of the miniature pedestal growth technology by growing Eu:Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ single crystal fibers in addition to Nd:YAG and sapphire single crystal fibers.

Improvements in geothermometry. Final technical report. Rev (open access)

Improvements in geothermometry. Final technical report. Rev

Alkali and alkaline earth geothermometers are useful for estimating geothermal reservoir temperatures, though a general theoretical basis has yet to be established and experimental calibration needs improvement. Equilibrium cation exchange between feldspars provided the original basis for the Na-K and Na-K-Ca geothermometers (Fournier and Truesdell, 1973), but theoretical, field and experimental evidence prove that neither equilibrium nor feldspars are necessary. Here, evidence is summarized in support of these observations, concluding that these geothermometers can be expected to have a surprisingly wide range of applicability, but that the reasons behind such broad applicability are not yet understood. Early experimental work proved that water-rock interactions are slow at low temperatures, so experimental calibration at temperatures below 150/sup 0/ is impractical. Theoretical methods and field data were used instead for all work at low temperatures. Experimental methods were emphasized for temperatures above 150/sup 0/C, and the simplest possible solid and solution compositions were used to permit investigation of one process or question at a time. Unexpected results in experimental work prevented complete integration of the various portions of the investigation.

Stochastic basis for curve shape, RBE and temporal dependence (open access)

Stochastic basis for curve shape, RBE and temporal dependence

This paper uses biophysical-microdosimetric quantities, measured in a physical surrogate or phantom cell, to explain the shape of absorbed dose-quantal cell response curves, the role of radiation quality and the influence of dose rate. Responses expected are explored first in simple autonomous cell systems, followed by increasingly-complex systems. Complications seen with increasingly-complex systems appear to be confined largely to the higher dose and dose rate ranges.
