Abstract: "Fish, waterfowl and wading birds, and aquatic mammal populations on Lake Conway were surveyed for 1 year after the introduction of the herbivorous fish, white amur (Ctenopharyngodon idella). Low water levels reduced littoral zone area, which lead to stunted panfish and poorer condition of largemouth bass. Vegetated samples supported more diverse fish populations than beach sites. White amur and migratory waterfowl consumed the same plant foods; continued reduction of submerged plants by white amur may adversely affect overwintering waterfowl populations. Aquatic mammals were influenced by removal of vegetation due to shoreline development."

From purpose and scope: One of the objectives of the ongoing U.S. Geological Survey investigation of the Loxahatchee River estuary is to provide baseline information on the estuary. This map report was prepared to fulfill part of this objective. It provides information on bathymetry, hydrology, and benthic sediment and biota.

From introduction: The purpose of this study is to define causes of sinkhole development in an area north of Tampa (Florida) (fig. 1), particularly the relation of geology, hydrology, and hydrologic changes to the type and severity of subsidence or collapse.

This report presents an assessment of water resources and data-network of the Manasota Basin located in Manatee and Sarasota counties in Florida.

From abstract: "An aquifer test conducted in the Green Swamp area December 15-16, 1975 was designed to stress the uppermost part of the Flordian aquifer so that the leakage characteristics of the overlying confining bed could determined." This report includes those results.

Abstract: A flowing artesian well tapping the Floridan aquifer at Chekika Hammock State Park, Dade County, Florida, has been contaminating the overlying Biscayne aquifer with saline water since 1944. The contaminating plume extends approximately 7 miles downstream and southeast of the well and ranges in width from 1 to 2 miles. The area of contamination is approximately 12 square miles. The primary contaminating chemical constituents are chloride, sodium, and sulfate ions.

From abstract: At the Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation plant, Mulberry, Florida, high-chloride, acidic liquid wastes are injected into a dolomite section at depths below about 4,000 feet below land surface. Sonar caliper logs made in April 1976 revealed a solution chamber that is about 100 feet in height and has a maximum diameter of 23 feet in the injection zone.

From introduction: Recognizing the need for comprehensive information about these waters of variable quality, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Southwest Florida Water Management District, investigated their character and distribution in the Mansota and lower Peace Basins (fig. 1). This report presents the results of the study. Principal objectives were to: (1) develop a better understanding of areal water-quality variations, and (2) relate the information developed to the extant concepts of the areal geohydrologic system.

From introduction: This study is part of a regional study of the Tertiary limestone aquifer system in the southeastern United States. The regional study encompasses all of Florida and extends into Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina--a total area of about 82,000 square miles.

From introduction: The purpose of this report is to present irrigation water-use data for selected farms and to show how these data are used to estimate total water use for irrigating various crops in southwest Florida. The study area includes all of the Southwest Florida Water Management District and is about 10,000 miles in size (figure 1). The initial emphasis on benchmark farm locations was in Hillsborough, Manatee, and Polk Counties. As the program continues, new farms are being added in surrounding counties (figure 2).

From introduction: The purpose of this report is to: (1) Present flood data for the gaged sites used in the flood-frequency analysis. (2) Describe the method of analysis used to develop the flood-estimating technique. (3) Provide regression equations for estimating floods on natural-flow (unregulated) streams. (4) Provide a method for improving the flood estimate at gaged sites. (5) Provide illustrative examples of applying the flood-estimating technique.
