Iconographs For Microcomputer and Chamber Orchestra
Iconographs is such a composition in which mathematical techniques are brought to bear. Nine separate number series have been generated and carried out to 1024 units. These series are combined by addition to calculate a single number by taking the remainder after dividing the sum of the series by nine. This mod 9 reduction is used to choose a set of pitches. Iconographs is a composition for microcomputer and chamber orchestra written in proportional notation with 1024 time segments grouped into 32 pages of 32 time segments each. The duration for each segment is .618034 seconds, which is the Golden Mean of one second, represented in a horizontal space of .34375 inches. The horizontal space/time-frame proportion is consistent but the actual duration of sounds are only approximate. The duration of the entire composition is 10.54778 minutes with a total horizontal space of 352 inches. The structure of the composition as a whole has no relationship to any of the traditional forms does contain a focus of formal structure at time-frame number 632, the Golden Mean. This focus is expressed by a density of sound events in all parts.

Makropterosuus
Makropterosuus, a single movement composition for full orchestra, is approximately sixteen minutes in duration. The work is scored for piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets in B-flat, two tenor trombones, bass trombone, tuba, percussion, and strings. The composition of Makropterosuus involved the development of specialized computational procedures for the generation of melodic and rhythmic data.

Arda
Arda is an instrumental chamber work scored for cello, percussion, and multiple keyboards with a total duration of approximately thirteen minutes. The work is structured in an arch form whose divisions are based on instrumental and textual groupings. The pitch organization utilizes prominent intervals, improvised passages on certain passages on certain pitches, and the double harmonic mode, which is derived from an Indian raga. Various instrumental techniques are also used throughout the work to alter timbres as well as to create more interesting vertical sonorities.

Nightdreams
Nightdreams, a single-movement work for orchestra, is approximately nine and one-half minutes in duration. The concept for Nightdreams evolves from sketching three types of sounds as photographs: melodically oriented sounds, sound-mass texture, and vertical sonorities. A twelve-note set is used to construct the pitch content of the melodically oriented sounds. This set includes the intervals of a m2, M2, m6, and T. Sound-mass textures are constructed from the same intervals that are contained in the twelve-note set plus the addition of a m3 and a P5. Vertical sonorities use the linear aspect of the twelve-note set mapped onto a set of twelve different rhythms which alternate between non-retrogradable and retrogradable. Although the piece is contained in a single move-ment, there are twelve sections, each with its own characteristics.

...for the time is at hand : An Original Musical Composition
...for the time is at hand : An Original Musical Composition, for orchestra and tape, is a single movement work in five overlapping sections with a total duration of approximately twenty minutes. Using a stochastic composition program written in Hewlett-Packard BASIC, the final chord of Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps serves as a "seed" to generate the "pitch density" (vertical pitch distribution), "timbre density"(vertical instrument distribution), and dynamics of the work.

The Wind Was There
The Wind Was There is a setting for soprano voice and orchestra of two poems by Bravig Imbs (1904-46). Imbs was an American writer active in France for most of his career. He was also a violinist and amateur composer. The piece is in two movements, with a total duration of approximately twenty-five minutes. Each movement represents a different stylistic approach to the musical material. Movement one represents the spirit, though not the harmonic language, of the early twentieth century. The second movement shows the influence of Lutoslawski and Lugeti. This eclectic approach was chosen due to the quite different moods imparted to me by the two poems.The relationship between the soprano and the orchestra is not one between soloist and accompaniment, but is more in the nature of a symphonic dialogue.

Finger Spirits: Piano Concerto
Finger Spirits is a concerto for piano and orchestra. The traditional concerto form of three, large, separate movements is not present here. It is a one-movement work in three continuous sections. Certain premises of the concerto are retained: (1) the interplay of soloists and orchestra; (2) the display of vistuosity; and (3) the use of fixed thematic elements. Throughout the performance, the pianist alternates playing actual notes with gestures used in manual communication and mimetic elaborations created by the composer. The gestures delineate shapes of particular objects and depict emotions that are present in the work as it unfolds. Finger Spirits explores the act of performance and alters the traditional concert ritual of audience-performer opposition. In addition, it incorporates gestures as an extension of the role of the pianist and thus represents a form of music theater.

It's All in the Cards
It's All in the Cards is an instrumental chamber work consisting of three movements for ten percussionists encircling the audience. The total duration of the piece is approximately thirteen minutes. Much of the rhythmic and melodic material, as well as the form, was determined by shuffling and dealing a standard deck of fifty-two cards. Other computational procedures have been used to achieve the effect of sound moving from one spatial location to another, an effect on which must be regarded as an essential factor in performance of the work.

The Contest: A Ballet for Orchestra and Prepared Tape
The Contest is a ballet scored for orchestra and tape. It was composed in the tradition of dramatic orchestral ballets and sets the biblical story from 1 Kings, chapter 18, verses 20-40. Certain portions of the work were written using computer assisted compositional programs developed by the composer. These programs were written in the BASIC programming language. Other sections of the score were composed intuitively, using no computer programs. The tape for the last movement was prepared on the Synclavier II digital syntesizer using the Script system and the Synclavier II keyboard instrument.

The Chi Square Approximation to the Hypergeometric Probability Distribution
This study compared the results of his chi square text of independence and the corrected chi square statistic against Fisher's exact probability test (the hypergeometric distribution) in contection with sampling from a finite population. Data were collected by advancing the minimum call size from zero to a maximum which resulted in a tail area probability of 20 percent for sample sizes from 10 to 100 by varying increments. Analysis of the data supported the rejection of the null hypotheses regarding the general rule-of-thumb guidelines concerning sample size, minimum cell expected frequency and the continuity correction factor. it was discovered that the computation using Yates' correction factor resulted in values which were so overly conservative (i.e. tail area porobabilities that were 20 to 50 percent higher than Fisher's exact test) that conclusions drawn from this calculation might prove to be inaccurate. Accordingly, a new correction factor was proposed which eliminated much of this discrepancy. Its performance was equally consistent with that of the uncorrected chi square statistic and at times, even better.

Correlates of Perceived Computer Helplessness
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between computer experience and selected demographic variables to knowledge about computers; knowledge of computers, experience with computers and selected demographic variables and attitudes towards computers to perceived computer helplessness. The study utilized two samples. Questionnaires were hand delivered to 68 out of 81 students enrolled in recreation classes at North Texas State University and questionnaires were sent to 130 Dallas Park and Recreation professionals via their inter-department mail (115 surveys returned). The data analysis indicated that the knowledge, attitude, and helplessness scales were highly reliable. Regression analysis indicated that knowledge, experience, attitudes, sex, age, and occupation were significant predictors of helplessness.

Marital Satisfaction in Returning Female Students
One area which may be expected to play an important role in a married woman's decision to return to school. as well as in determining the magnitude of the difficulties she will be confronted with, which is marital satisfaction. The present study explored the roles of sex-role identification, sex-role stereotypy were found to exert a significant influence on marital satisfaction. The present study explored the roles of sex-role identification, ex-role stereotypy, self-esteem, maternal employment, and number of years married as predictors of marital satisfaction in returning female students. Masculine sex-role identification, feminine sex-role identification, number of years married, and sex-role stereotypy were found to exert a significant influence on marital satisfaction. These findings are discussed in terms of the introduction of role-strain into the marriage of these.

The Perceptions of Teachers of United States History in Traditionally Black Colleges with Regard to their Efforts to Promote Cognitive Development in Students
The problem for this investigation was the extent to which instruction in the traditionally black colleges and universities was directed toward higher cognitive skills as perceived by teachers of United States history in these institutions. The purposes of the study were to determine whether teachers (1) in state supported as opposed to private black colleges, (2) in urban-based as opposed to non-urban-based black colleges, (3) at non-denominational as opposed to denominational black colleges, (4) of age forty or older as opposed to teachers under age forty at black colleges,(5) categorized according to gender at black colleges, (6) categorized as United States citizens as opposed to non-citizens at black colleges, and (7) taught at black colleges and those who taught at white colleges differed significantly in their reported efforts to promote higher cognitive development. The following conclusions were drawn: Teachers at black colleges, as well as black teachers and white teachers at black colleges appeared to recognize the need to develop the higher mental powers of theirs students. An Analytical Survey of Educators' Attitudes Toward Competency Testing
This study addresses the attitudes of counselors, teachers, and administrators toward competency testing programs in their districts. ten districts from each of the four states --Arizona, California, Michigan, and Oregon-- were randomly selected to participate in the study. A total of 247 educators responded to the survey. The following conclusions were made on the basis of the findings: (1) The competency programs have the support the teachers, counselors, and administrators who work with them; (2) They are perceived as being effective in identifying students in need of remediation; (3) They are perceived as being most beneficial to the deficient student, but the setting of minimum standards had not lowered the expectations of the average and above average student; (4) They have not eliminated any programs or courses from the curriculum; (5) They have not limited the parameter of course content guides to concepts covered in the competency test; (6) They are perceived as nor being expensive to the district; (7) The competency program does add a burden of extra paperwork for the groups surveyed, especially the counselors; (8) Most competency programs involve teachers, counselors, and administrators in the planning; (9) Improvements in the quality of education and in student learning …

A Multivariate Model for Testing the Information Content of Constant Dollar Disclosures Required by Statement of Financial Reporting and Changing Prices (FASB No. 33)
In September 1979, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) issued a statement entitled Financial Reporting and Changing Prices (FASB No. 33). FASB No. 33 requires publicly-held companies of a certain size to issue supplementary constant dollar and current cost disclosures along with their primary financial statements.To investigate the effect of the signals on security prices the study used a methodology known as "Iso-beta Portfolio Analysis" and employed different models in conjunction with the methodology, the market model (MM) and a new model called "the multi-index model" (MIM). Cluster analysis was used to develop the indexing used with the MIM.

Twenty-one Original Prose Selections for use in Teaching Oral Interpretation in Junior High and High School
Twenty-one original prose selections were written for use by junior high school students of oral interpretation. A survey of textbook publishers and junior high school teachers revealed a need for material of appropriate length and of suitable reading and interest levels for oral reading in the junior high school classroom. The selections were read and evaluated by a group of junior high students and a junior high teacher of speech. The responses indicate that the selections are effective and usable as an instructional aid in teaching oral interpretation in junior high school.

Assessment Center Performance of Volunteers and Nonvolunteers
The present study compares the performance of volunteers and nonvolunteers in a 10-hour integrated series of management simulation exercises. It was hypothesized that there would be no performance differences in these two groups. Subjects were business students. Dependent measures were global ratings of management level and potential, as well as a behavioral checklist score. The results partially support the hypothesis. Volunteers performed significantly better on the global measures but not on the behavioral checklist. Differences on global measures were attributed to demand characteristics, whereas the behavioral checklist was not susceptible to this artifact. This finding raises doubts as to the usefulness of global measures and the validity of research based on them. Studies designed to upgrade and validate the behavioral checklist are needed.

Tartini, J. Brahms, M. Ravel, J.S. Bach, C. Debussy, L. v. Beethoven and Others
The lecture recital was given on March 1, 1982. The subject was the History of the Fantasia Until 1735 Together with Performances of Fantasias No. 1, 3, and 8 from the Twelve Fantasias for Unaccompanied Violin by Georg Phillipp Telemann, and it included a brief survey of fantasia composition from the sixteenth century until 1735, comments on solo violin forms of the period, observations relative to performance practices of Baroque music, which were followed by detailed descriptions of Fantasias N. 1, 3, and 8. The lecture was followed by uninterrupted performances of these fantasias.

Histological and Fine Structural Alterations in the Aging rat Ventral Prostate Gland
The purpose of this study was to examine the ventral prostate from Sprague-Dawley rats of the ages two, twelve, and twenty-four months to determine the extent of histological and fine structural change. The tissue was processed for routine light and electron microscopy.

Evaluation of Immobilized Boronates for Studies of Adenine Nucleotide Metabolism
Immobilized boronates were evaluated for studies of adenine nucleotide metabolism. These studies were performed using Affi-gel 601, a commercial boronate gel, and dihydroxyboryl Sepharose and dihydroxyboryl-Bio Rex which were synthesized in the laboratory. The studies performed included the determination of the relative binding affinity of a variety of adenine containing compounds for the three immobilized boronates under differing chromatographic conditions.

Effects of an Electric Field on Water Uptake in Single Roots of Intact Onion Plants
Water uptake by a single root of an onion plant (Allium cepa) was measured potentially before, during and following exposure of shoots to an external electric field (EEF). The field strength used was 9kV/m DC and AC (60-Hz) brought about a statistically significant increase (44-71%) in water uptake if the shoot chamber was at almost 100% humidity.

The Edition of a Quartet for Solo Double Bass, Violin, Viola, and Violoncello by Franz Anton Hoffmeister, a Lecture Recital, Together with Selected Works by J.S. Bach, N. Paganini, S. Koussevitsky, F. Skorzeny, L. Walzel and Others
A solo-quartet by Hoffmeister previously unpublished was discovered by the author in the archives of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. This work contributes to the modern solo repertoire for double bass, and has considerable musical merit. It is a well written work using cleverly overlapped phrases, counterpoint and imitative writing, and effective juxtaposition of contrasting instrumentation. It lies well on the bass and provides an excellent solo vehicle for advanced bassists.

Nebraska Interstate 80 Bicentennial Sculpture Project
In 1973 , the citizens of Nebraksa embarked upon the Nebraska I-80 Bicentennial Sculpture Project, which provided large roadside sculptures along Interstate 80. A controversial project, referred to as an outdoor sculpture garden, it was completed in 1976 as a lasting commemoration of America's Bicentennial, The sculptures are interspersed for approximately five hundred miles throughout the state and located on alternate sides of the expressway at roadside rest areas.
