A Study of the Effects of Three Texas School Finance Bills and Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 on Fiscal Equity in Operating Revenue

The purpose of this study was to compare per pupil receipts for operation in most school districts in Texas based on the changes in State funding provided for by three major finance bills and to analyze the effects of federal monies provided by Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to determine the degree of equity in the State's school finance structure. The population consisted of 973 public school districts reporting all data for 1974-75, 1976-77, and 1977-78. The districts were grouped into ten wealth deciles based on School Tax Assessment Practices Board assessed property value per student in average daily attendance. A weighted mean value for each decile for each category and year of funding was computed. Correlation coefficients were computed to provide an index of relationship between the categories of dollars available per pupil for operations. Coefficients of variation were determined to express the magnitude of variation relative to the average value for each additive category for each decile.

A Study of the Implementation and Utilization of the Merit Systems Protection Board in Adverse Action Cases

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 on the federal civil service through the establishment of the Merit Systems Protection Board. The Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 was designed to correct many of the abuses which existed under the Civil Service Commission related to appeals procedures and inefficiency within the federal government. The majority of data collected for this study were obtained from the Dallas field office of the Merit Systems Protection Board, which covers approximately 275,000 federal employees in a five-state area. Additional data, related to all of the regional field offices of the Merit Systems Protection Board, were obtained from Washington, D.C. Two research tools were used to collect data from the Dallas field office: a questionnaire and a personal interview. Three hypotheses were examined. Hypothesis I stated that the creation of the Merit Systems Protection Board has not given presiding officials any additional authority to handle or decide adverse action cases brought within their jurisdiction. A Study of the Individual Traits of Effective Managers for Residential Facilities for the Mentally Retarded

Studies of Individual traits perceived as necessary to achieve managerial effectiveness, while multitudinous in the world of commerce, have yet to be undertaken as they apply to managers in residential facilities serving mentally retarded individuals. The problem of this study was to identify a group of individual traits perceived as characteristic of effective managers in residential facilities for the mentally retarded. Projectively, the identified traits could constitute valid criterion for consideration in the selection process utilized in employing managers for both public and private facilities. The primary purpose of this study was to develop an instrument which would enable the interviewer to secure information regarding specific individual traits. An informed predictive decision regarding the effective management potential, of the individual, for a residential facility for mentally retarded individuals would be greatly enhanced. The secondary purpose of the study was to focus on a comparison between group responses for each of the 25 trait items. A Study of the Position of the Chief Financial Officer in Higher Education Institutions

This study is concerned with determining the role, responsibility, qualifications, and changing trends regarding the position of chief financial officer in higher education : institutions as perceived by presidents and chief financial officers. After a comprehensive review of the literature, a questionnaire was developed, validated, and sent to the presidents and chief financial officers of 100 private and 100 public institutions which had randomly been selected. One-hundred seven presidents and 117 chief financial officers returned the completed questionnaires which produced data upon which the findings of the study are based.

A Study of the Relationship Between Love Attitudes and Marital Adjustment Through Seven Stages of the Marital Life Cycle

The problem of this study was to investigate the relationship between attitudes of love and marital adjustment through seven stages of the marital life cycle. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the changes which occur in attitude toward love and marital adjustment through the marital life cycle. The average number of subjects in each of the seven marital groups was 16, for a total of 114 couples or 228 subjects. All subjects were volunteers from three North Texas church populations. Test data for each of the seven marital groups consisted of husbands" and wives' scores on the Marital Adjustment Test and the Love Attitudes Inventory.

A Study of the Underlying Values That Motivate Elementary and Advanced Accounting Students

This study deals with three problems—the influence of the study of accounting on the value-level choices of individuals, a comparison of value—level choices among accounting populations, and a comparison of value-level choices between accounting and each of four other disciplines. Two models were developed to test sixteen hypotheses related to these problems. One model isolates any influence of the study of accounting on value-level choice and the other model develops value-level profiles without regard to cause. Multiple Regression Correlation techniques were used to analyze the data.

A Stylistic Comparison of Aaron Copland's Passacaglia, Piano variations, and Four piano Blues: A Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin and Others

During Aaron Copland's long and productive life, he has written many compositions of distinction; among his piano compositions are the Passacaglia, Piano Variations, and Four Piano Blues. These three piano works were composed during a span of over twenty years and reflect many different influences in the composer's musical life. The Passacaglia, an early work, was written under the direction of Copland's teacher, Nadia Boulanger. It was strongly influenced by her and the French neoclassic school. The influence of jazz is most prominent in the Four Piano Blues, whereas the Piano Variations were influenced by Arnold Schoenberg and other composers of the twelve-tone school. This study contains an examination of each of three piano pieces mentioned, with emphasis upon aspects of thematic development, harmony, rhythm, and sonority; then a comparison between the pieces is made.

Synthesis of Anthracyclines Related to Adriamycin

This dissertation reports the preparation of several types of anthraquinones structurally related to adriamycin. It describes the synthesis of two types of 2-aminoquinizarin compounds. It also presents two new syntheses of a heterocyclic tetracyclic ring system, similar to the aglicone ring system of adriamycin. A series of 2-aminoquinizarins was prepared by adding several primary amines to quinizarin. Quinizarin was shown to be essentially inert toward secondary amines. Several secondary amine adducts with quinizarin have been prepared, however, by treating the bis-boroacetate ester of quinizarin with the amines. Both types of 2-aminoquinizarin compounds exhibit outstanding potential for possessing antineoplastic activity, and several have been submitted to the National Cancer Institute for testing in their screening program for antineoplastic agents.

Synthesis of Aziridine Analogues of Pyrethroids

Rules which correlate structure and insecticidal activity of pyrethroids have evolved over the last thirty years from the results obtained in the testing of various synthetic pyrethroids. The major portion of these rules have dealt either with the development of new alcohol moieties or variations in the unsaturated side chain of the cyclopropane ring. There has been very little work done concerning modifications of the cyclopropane ring. This study was initiated to discover the affect of substituting an aziridin ring for the cyclopropane ring found in pyrethroids.

Teaching the Alphabet and Number Keys Concurrently in High School Beginning Typewriting Classes

The problem of this study is that of comparing a concurrent approach with the traditional (delayed) approach of presenting the alphabet and number/symbol keys on the typewriter keyboard. Ten experimental classes and ten control classes, of male and female high school beginning typewriting students in Texas, participated in the study. The experimental group was introduced the alphabet and number/symbol keys concurrently with drills coordinated with Century 21 Typewriting. The control group was introduced the alphabet and number/symbol keys according to Century 21 Typewriting. Both groups used three minutes of daily practice on number drills through Lesson 60.

A Theory of Tragedy (open access)

A Theory of Tragedy

This study defines and applies a theory of tragedy which is based on the work of Friedrich Nietzsche in The Birth of Tragedy. In the first chapter the writer argues for the need of a widely accepted theory of tragedy and show that we do not presently have one. In the same chapter, the writer presents the theory that tragedy is a very specific art type which transcends genre and which is the product of a synthesis of the Dionysiac and Apollonian forces in Western culture. The writer argues that by understanding the philosophical and aesthetic nature of the forces as they are expressed in tragedy we can isolate and define the essential elements of tragedy. Tragedy must have a person of heroic stature as its main protagonist. It must have a specific kind of plot in which a reversal of the hero's experience of the universe occurs. It must have a choric element, which is a combination of two components: communality and lyricism. Finally, tragedy must contain a mythic background which allows for the expression of two themes, the Dionysiac theme and the Apollonian theme.

Treatment of Acne Vulgaris by Biofeedback-Assisted Cue-Controlled Relaxation and Guided Cognitive Imagery

The primary purpose of the present study is to demonstrate that acne vulgaris can be reduced by psychological treatment. A cognitive-behavioral adjunctive intervention involving biofeedback-assisted relaxation and cognitive imagery procedures for the treatment of acne vulgaris was investigated in this study with 30 patients, already receiving traditional dermatological treatment, as participants. A three-group design was used which consisted of a treatment (relaxation-imagery), a rational behavior group therapy attention-comparison, and a medical intervention control (medication and lesion extraction) group.

The Trombone in German and Austrian Ensemble Sonatas of the Late Seventeenth Century a Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of Presser, Bozza, George, Beethoven, Stevens, Wilder, White, Spillman, Tuthill and Others

The dissertation consists of four recitals. Three solo recitals featured a variety of selected works for bass trombone and piano by traditional and contemporary composers. The lecture recital, entitled "The Trombone in German and Austrian Ensemble Sonatas of the Late Seventeenth Century," is a study which examines the role of the trombone, both as a solo and ensemble instrument, and the functions of the instrument in ensemble sonatas of the late seventeenth century. The trombone's use in instrumental ensembles was traced from the fifteenth century to the present. The program included selections by German composers Daniel Speer and Matthias Weckmann, and Austrian composers Autonio Bertali, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber.

Two Anonymous Eighteenth-Century Manuscripts for Trumpet with Oboe Ensemble from the Lilien Part-Books (Sonsfeld Collection): A Lecture Recital; Together with Three Other Recitals

The lecture was given on July 27th, 1981. The discussion dealt with two anonymous eighteenth-century works: a Symphonia, Anon. 32b in D for two trumpets, two oboes, two violins, viola and bassoon; and a Concerto, Anon. 3 in D for trumpet, three oboes, and two bassoons. Both works are from part-books, originally owned by the Prussian General Georg von Lilien (1652-1726), which are now part of the "Sonsfeld Collection" housed in the Bibliotheca Furstenbergiana at Schloss Herdringen, W. Germany. The lecture included an examination of the origin of the manuscripts, the historical background for the works, and aspects of mixed style in the music. It also contained an analytical discussion of each work. Both works were then performed. In addition to the lecture recital three other recitals of music for solo trumpet were given. The first recital was given on November 21, 1977 and included the Concerto for Trumpet by Johann Nepomuk Hummel, and works of Henry Purcell, Halsey Stevens, and Eugene Bozza. The second recital was presented on July 3, 1978. It featured the Concerto in A('(FLAT)) by Alexander Arutunian along with works of Georges Enesco, Jean Rivier, and Allen Molineux. The Use of Relaxation-Suggestions and Modeling-Instructions in Modifying Eating Behavior of Institutionalized Mentally Retarded

Training programs designed to remediate eating deficits of higher level patients have involved some combination of verbal instructions, manual guidance, modeling, and reinforcement. Training methods which incorporate relaxation and imagery to facilitate behavior change have received little attention with this population. The current study was designed to explore the use of relaxation and suggestions as a training strategy to modify the shoveling behavior of moderately and mildly retarded institutionalized clients. Three treatment methods, relaxation-suggestion with reinforcement, modeling-instruction with reinforcement, and relaxation-suggestion alone, were compared. A greater reduction in shoveling behavior was hypothesized for the modeling-instruction with reinforcement group than for either of the relaxation-suggestion groups, and a greater reduction in shoveling behavior was hypothesized for the relaxation suggestion with reinforcement group than for the relaxation-suggestion alone group.

The Uses of Minimum Competency Testing in Large-City School Districts of the Nation

The problem of this study was to examine the current practices and evaluations of the uses of minimum competency testing as perceived by the representatives of thirty large city school districts of the nation. In order to conduct this study, a questionnaire was developed and validated by panels. Members of the two five-member panels included various level personnel. The survey instrument was mailed to the superintendent of thirty large-city school districts. Twenty-nine were returned representing 96.67 percent of the population surveyed.
