Training programs designed to remediate eating deficits of higher level patients have involved some combination of verbal instructions, manual guidance, modeling, and reinforcement. Training methods which incorporate relaxation and imagery to facilitate behavior change have received little attention with this population. The current study was designed to explore the use of relaxation and suggestions as a training strategy to modify the shoveling behavior of moderately and mildly retarded institutionalized clients. Three treatment methods, relaxation-suggestion with reinforcement, modeling-instruction with reinforcement, and relaxation-suggestion alone, were compared. A greater reduction in shoveling behavior was hypothesized for the modeling-instruction with reinforcement group than for either of the relaxation-suggestion groups, and a greater reduction in shoveling behavior was hypothesized for the relaxation suggestion with reinforcement group than for the relaxation-suggestion alone group.

The purpose of the study was to design and evaluate materials for integrating musical concepts and stylistic concepts into the high school choral rehearsal. Need for the study was established by examining related literature and by means of a survey of Texas high school choral directors. A systems approach model of curriculum development, consisting of a ten-step procedural outline, was adopted for formulation of the study. The following criteria for the curriculum, called Integrated Musical Information for Choirs (IMIC), were set: (1) Materials should be in the hands of each student; (2) Materials would relate directly to music being performed by the choir; (3) Use of the materials should assist the teacher in organizing his/her work; (4) Teachers should be able to put materials into use without adaptation; (5) Teachers' out-of-class preparation should be minimal.

The problem of this study was to determine through a review of the literature the reliability and validity of using student, alumni and faculty perceptions of program quality as criteria in the evaluation of off-campus programs, developing data gathering instruments to obtain these perceptions, administering the instruments, and determining if there were significant differences in the ratings within and between the three groups.

Wuthering Heights is a composite of opposites. Its two houses, its two families, its two generations, its two planes of existence are held in place by Emily Bronte's careful manipulation of repetitive, yet differentiated, symbols associated with each of these pairs. Using symbols to develop her polarities and to unify them along the imaginatively rendered horizontal axis connecting Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, the vertical axis connecting the novel's several "heavens" and "hells," and the third dimensional axis connecting the spiritual and corporeal worlds, Emily Bronte gives the divided world of Wuthering Heights an almost perfect symmetry. This study divides the more than seven hundred symbols into physical and nonphysical. The physical symbols are subdivided into setting, animal life, plant life, people, celestial objects, and miscellaneous objects. The fewer nonphysical symbols are grouped under movement, light, time, emotions, concepts, and miscellaneous terms. Verticality and thresholds, the two most important symbolic motifs, are drawn from both physical and nonphysical symbols.

The purposes of this study were to measure the knowledge and understanding of certain health concepts that are held by international students who attend a large multi-purpose university. The international students took Educational Testing Service's Cooperative Health Education Test (CHET), which was designed for junior high school students, and their mean responses were compared with the CHET ninthgrade national mean scores of American students on selected variables. In addition to demographic variables, the test variables used were consumer health, community health, international health, disease and disorders, personal health care, sex education, growth and development, nutrition, mental health, drug use and abuse, and safety and first aid. The ultimate purpose of the study was to discover the health area conceptions of international students for the use of teachers, curriculum planners, and program evaluators.

The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of determining the degree to which fiscal disparity in Texas school districts affects debt service, as well as maintenance and operation and local enrichment. This study has four main purposes: to determine whether the poor school districts are exerting more or less effort for debt service, maintenance and operation and total taxation than are the wealthy districts; to determine how the size of Texas school districts is related to district wealth; to determine the number of Texas school districts that do not levy a tax for debt service; and to provide information for persons interested in school finance matters—namely, legislators, educators, students of finance and lay citizens who may or may not be property taxpayers.

The purpose of this study is to determine the applicability of western urban theories to African cities, especially to Lagos, Nigeria. The study surveys urban land use patterns, migration and migrants' adjustment in cities, social relationships in cities, and urban stratification. The investigation's thesis is that western urban theories in these four areas of urban ecology may not be entirely applicable to the study of African cities. Theories of land use patterns are discussed from the classical and the cultural, or voluntaristic, viewpoints; and the other three areas are examined from the perspective of broad western urban theories.

This dissertation is a detailed study of Chickasaw removal, based on correspondence and other documents from the period 1794-1844. In addition to National Archives microfilm, information has been gathered from correspondence sent by the Office of Indian Affairs and miscellaneous Chickasaw records of the period, both collections located at the National Archives. A thorough investigation has been conducted into the communications between the Chickasaw Nation and the United States Department of War. An attempt was made to include the opinions expressed by Chickasaw leaders, American field personnel, and Department of War officials involved during this period. Thus, the major sources consulted include the letters of the Office of Indian Affairs which were either to, from, or about the Chickasaw.

The problem of the present study was to describe and analyze marketing in Saudi Arabia and American marketing executives' knowledge about the Saudi market. The purposes of the study were twofold: (1) to describe and analyze marketing in Saudi Arabia and (2) to determine what American marketing executives know about the Saudi Arabian market. This study employed both primary and secondary data. For the analysis of marketing in Saudi arabia, primarily secondary sources were used from the available literature. For the analysis of American marketing executives' knowledge about the Saudi Arabian market, primary sources were used in the form of American marketers' responses to a mailed questionnaire.

The reaction of chlorodimethylvinylsilane with tertbutyllithium was investigated in the presence of several conjugated dienes. In all cases except with 2,5-dimethylfuran, [2+4] cycloadducts of a silene intermediate are obtained in hydrocarbon solvents. The presence of THF in the reaction mixture suppresses the formation of cycloadducts in favor of 1,3-disilacyclobutanes. In the reaction of dimethylethoxyvinylsilane or dimethylmethoxyvinylsilane with tert-butyllithium the main product is the 1,1-dimethyl2-neopentyl-4-(dimethylalkoxysilyl)silacyclobutane. It is concluded that lithium chloride elimination to give silene intermediates occurs in hydrocarbon solvents. In the presence of strong Lewis bases or when the leaving group on silicon is an alkoxy group, the addition reaction giving a-lithiosilanes occurs and products arising from their coupling reactions are obtained.

The problem of this study was to make short-term projections of student semester credit hour enrollments, at each of two state universities of comparable size, based on traditional time series analysis. 1. The first purpose of the study was to identify the cyclical component of deseasonalized enrollment data. 2. The second purpose was to determine a cyclical economic indicator having a high correlation with the cyclical component of the enrollment data. The selected economic indicator was used in establishing explanatory equations for projecting enrollment. 3. The third purpose was to compare projected 1979- 1980 academic year enrollment figures obtained from explanatory equations for each institution with actual enrollment figures of each institution for that year. 4. The fourth purpose was to compare the explanatory equations developed for the two institutions and the projections of student semester credit hour enrollments they yielded. 5. The fifth purpose was to discuss enrollment projections for each institution and the uses of enrollment projections in planning.

The problem of this study is faculty attrition and role strain reported by faculty members in baccalaureate and higher degree programs in nursing. The purpose of the study is to determine whether variations exist in role strain reported by faculty members and faculty attrition based on institutional size, structure, and complexity, and on official expectations for faculty members. A questionnaire eliciting information regarding faculty attrition was mailed to seventy-five randomly selected administrators of baccalaureate and higher degree programs. Data related to faculty role strain were collected by questionnaires mailed to two hundred fifty randomly-selected faculty members from participating schools. Sixty-three administrative questionnaires and one hundred ninety-five faculty questionnaires were returned in usable form and were included in the analysis of data.

The three recitals consisted of performances of original twentieth century solo works for trombone with the exception of two trombone quartets, Adagio, by C. Saint-Saëns, arranged by Ken Murley, and Sonata by Daniel Speer. The lecture recital establishes the position of Kazimierz Serocki (1922-1981) as a major composer not only in Poland but in the rest of the world as well. His many works cover a wide spectrum of styles and genres. The solo trombone works, in particular, are among his most often performed works from his early neoclassic period. The lecture is also an attempt to illuminate the role of neoclassicism in Poland through a brief discussion of Polish neoclassicists, Grażyna Bacewicz and Michael Spisak, and other composers before and after World War II including Constantin Regamey and Roman Haubenstock-Ramati. An analysis of the two solo trombone works, Sonatina and Concerto, shows the technique of composition used by Serocki and the demands placed upon the performer by the music. These works were among the first in a growing list of works for solo trombone composed in response to the notable lack of large scale works of quality for solo trombone during the early twentieth century. The purpose of the study was to investigate the multi-sensory responses of children to symbolizing musical sound through speech rhythm patterns. Speech rhythm patterns consist of the number of syllables and the stress/nonstress relationships of these syllables in a word or a phrase. The research problems were (1) to determine children's responses to speech rhythm patterns according to the differential sensory modes used; (2) to determine the children's responses to speech rhythm patterns by age, and (3) to compare children's responses to speech rhythm patterns by age and sensory modes.

The Lecture Recital was given on July 28, 1981. Its subject, Carl Reinecke's "Undine" Sonata, is a major work written for flute during the nineteenth century. Reinecke was highly respected as a conductor and pianist; his great love for the classical style tempered his Romanticism and conditioned his approach to both performance and composition. The subtitle of the sonata suggests a program based on Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué's short novel, Undine. Although few flutists are familiar enough with this tale to recognize its application to the sonata, an exploration of the program implied by the subtitle adds materially to an understanding and appreciation of the work; to a large extent, the content of each movement is conceived in terms of the program. Further examination of Reinecke's life and philosophy reveals that both the choice of this particular literary subject and the uniting of Romantic pictorialism with classical form were entirely characteristic of his writing. Since Reinecke specified no program other than the subtitle, any relating of the music to specific events in the story is necessarily a subjective postulation. The problem of this study was to determine the perceptions of music educators at selected United Negro College Fund colleges and universities concerning the importance of music teaching competencies and courses for prospective public school music teachers, it was further designed to (a) determine if the music educators were in agreement with the published competency recommendations of the National Association of Schools of Music and the Music Educators National Conference for preparing prospective public school music teachers and (b) to discover if there were significant differences in UNCF music educators' perceptions across selected independent variables concerning the importance of those competencies and courses.

The lecture was given on July 27th, 1981. The discussion dealt with two anonymous eighteenth-century works: a Symphonia, Anon. 32b in D for two trumpets, two oboes, two violins, viola and bassoon; and a Concerto, Anon. 3 in D for trumpet, three oboes, and two bassoons. Both works are from part-books, originally owned by the Prussian General Georg von Lilien (1652-1726), which are now part of the "Sonsfeld Collection" housed in the Bibliotheca Furstenbergiana at Schloss Herdringen, W. Germany. The lecture included an examination of the origin of the manuscripts, the historical background for the works, and aspects of mixed style in the music. It also contained an analytical discussion of each work. Both works were then performed. In addition to the lecture recital three other recitals of music for solo trumpet were given. The first recital was given on November 21, 1977 and included the Concerto for Trumpet by Johann Nepomuk Hummel, and works of Henry Purcell, Halsey Stevens, and Eugene Bozza. The second recital was presented on July 3, 1978. It featured the Concerto in A('(FLAT)) by Alexander Arutunian along with works of Georges Enesco, Jean Rivier, and Allen Molineux. Since the development of the understanding that the electron distribution within a molecule is chiefly responsible for its properties and behavior, factors influencing this charge distribution have been of interest to scientists. The chemical reactivity of a molecule, the physical properties, and to a large extent, structure and geometry, are all functions of the electron distribution. This study examines the issue of electronic structure from two points of view, each of them focussing on a specific component within the molecules studied. In the present work, the effects of the highly polar carbonyl group on spectroscopic parameters and physical behavior are investigated. An additional area of study is the effect of fluorine substitution on the energy levels of some halogenated ethylenes. The specific parameters examined are the ionization potentials, the absorption frequencies, and the energies of a class of excited states known as molecular Rydberg states. It was during the study of these halogenated ethylenes that the observations leading to the carbonyl compound investigations were made, so that the two areas examined are connected both experimentally and chemically.

This study's purpose was to investigate the phenomenon of hemispheric specialization for the pitch and rhythmic aspects of melody. Its research problems were to investigate the Influence of pitch, rhythm, and training on hemispheric specialization for pitch-plus-rhythm melodic fragments. A final problem was to examine the relationship between dlchotic ear scores and eye movements evidenced during melodic processing. Twenty musicians and twenty nonmuslcians, right-handed and equally divided as to gender, participated in the project. Accepted dlchotic testing and eye behavior indexing procedures were implemented to investigate each research problem. The dlchotic tape produced for the study contained five subtests In which pitch activity was variously greater than, less than, or equal to rhythmic activity.

The problem addressed in this study is the identification of perceived and preferred goals in post-primary educational institutions in Kaduna-State, Nigeria. The purposes of the study are to identify and analyze the most important goals and to make recommendations for improvements based on these findings. Chapter I discusses the background and significance of the study and the procedures used in collecting and analyzing data; Chapter II surveys related literature. Methodology and analysis of data are presented in Chapters III and IV. Chapter V offers the study's findings, summary, conclusions, and recommendations.

This work derived attitudinal input from 397 female college business majors concerning their preference for various job factors drawn from previously validated studies and their expected levels of satisfaction with those job factors in new job situations following graduation. Data were collected through the distribution of a questionnaire consisting of three sections: (1) demographic categories, (2) a list of twenty job factors with a Likert-like scale for respondents to record the strength of desire for each, and (3) an identical list of job factors with a Likert-like scale for respondents to record the expected level of satisfaction with those job factors on their new job.

This study is concerned with determining the role, responsibility, qualifications, and changing trends regarding the position of chief financial officer in higher education : institutions as perceived by presidents and chief financial officers. After a comprehensive review of the literature, a questionnaire was developed, validated, and sent to the presidents and chief financial officers of 100 private and 100 public institutions which had randomly been selected. One-hundred seven presidents and 117 chief financial officers returned the completed questionnaires which produced data upon which the findings of the study are based.

The Stammbueh or album of Johann Stobaeus, MS Sloane 1021 in the British Library, is dated January 8, 1640. Stobaeus, its owner, was Kapellmeister in Konigsberg, East Prussia. The album contains 164 pieces for ten- or eleven-course lute, including dances, secular pieces with generic titles, and settings of chorale tunes. Other major material includes two short sets of lute instructions; instructions for singers of liturgical music; poems by members of the Komgsberger Diahterkre's; and short rhymes and epigrams, many of which concern the lute. The dissertation presents a complete modern edition of the lute music and lute instructions, with commentary; biographical data concerning Stobaeus, with background material about Konigsberg and East Prussia; a selection of poems and epigrams, featuring all poems concerning the lute; and commentary on the literary material, especially the evidence it provides that the manuscript might have been compiled in its entirety around the written date of 1640, even though the music is old-fashioned.

The problem with which this investigation was concerned was that of determining the relationship between the variables of acculturation, imagery, self-concept, anxiety, stress, and seriousness of disease in Mexican-Americans. The purposes of this study were 1) to determine the statistical predictive efficiency of stress and its relation to disease, 2) to determine if a combination of anxiety, acculturation, self-concept, imagery, along with stress, would increase the statistical predictive efficiency concerning seriousness of disease, and 3) to provide information that may help to develope a theoretical base concerning the above variables and disease in Mexican-Americans.
