Chamber Concerto (open access)

Chamber Concerto

This composition is a concerto in two movements and has a total duration of approximately twenty-two minutes. The First Movement is prefaced by an Introduction, while the Second Movement is concluded with an Epilogue. The bass trombone functions in speeding up the tempo when it is featured in solo capacity. The horn, however, functions in slowing down the tempo when featured as a solo instrument. The speeding up and slowing down processes follow the principles of metric modulation.

Expanded Plastics Used as Sculptural Patterns for Burn out in Ceramic Shell Molds

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a method of burning out expanded plastic patterns invested in ceramic shell molds. Technological information suggested that the procedure was not feasible because plastic expansion or gas combustion invariably spoiled the mold. However, burning out expanded plastic patterns would provide a practical method of using such materials in the sculptor's studio; combined with ceramic shells, the patterns would promote accurately detailed castings with ease and convenience.

The Effects of Self-Recording and Projected Levels of Aspiration Upon Competitive Swimming Performance (open access)

The Effects of Self-Recording and Projected Levels of Aspiration Upon Competitive Swimming Performance

The purposes of the study were to determine the effects of self-recording techniques upon competitive swimming times, to determine the relationship between stated level of aspiration and subsequent performance, and to determine the influence of success or failure upon stated levels of aspiration. Subjects were fifteen female high-school competitive swimmers. Five subjects utilized self-recording techniques and projected levels of aspiration; ten subjects did not. Data were analyzed by analysis of covariance and by regression analysis. Alpha was .05. Conclusions of this study were that self-recording techniques do not significantly affect competitive swimming times, that a strong relationship exists between stated level of aspiration and subsequent performance, and that successful and unsuccessful performances generate increases in stated levels of aspiration.

The Captain Stormfield character in the published and unpublished works of Mark Twain

Captain Stormfield, the main character in Mark Twain's last book, Extract from Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven (1909), appears numerous times--under either the Stormfield name or some other--in Twain's published and unpublished works. Scholar's since Train's death have given only passing or slight notice to the Stormfield character. His numerous appearances, however his pivotal function among several unfinished works, and his essential optimism must lead to an awareness of his significant role in Twain's fiction.

It is recognized that all conventional merit systems have significant shortcomings. Therefore, by using a results-oriented approach which combines the best features of the critical incident technique with those of the forced choice method, it is hoped to accomplish this goal.
