Advanced geothermal primary heat exchanger (APEX). Quarterly progress report Q-2, 1 October 1975-31 December 1975 (open access)

Advanced geothermal primary heat exchanger (APEX). Quarterly progress report Q-2, 1 October 1975-31 December 1975

The APEX program is designed to investigate the concept that a continuously recirculating flow of fine solid particles in the brine stream will substantially retard the formation of scale in the primary heat exchanger. The primary technical effort during this reporting period has been the buildup of the test facility. Some preliminary testing has been conducted in order to establish process equipment suitability prior to completing the test facility design. Fouling experiments have also been conducted in the chemistry laboratory to preliminarily screen candidate geothermal fluid simulants. (MHR)

Advanced geothermal primary heat exchanger (APEX). Quarterly progress report Q-1, 1 July 1975-30 September 1975

The major effort during this reporting period was directed toward performing the analytical design task and initiating the laboratory setup for the self-cleaning heat exchanger concept. Analytical design includes the selection of a suitable demonstration site, water chemistry and temperature, and thermodynamic power cycle, and parametric design and sensitivity analysis of a heat exchanger suitable for a 10 MW electric proof of concept plant. Attitudes Toward Increased Government Control of Land Use (open access)

Attitudes Toward Increased Government Control of Land Use

This investigation is concerned with perceived detrimental aspects of land use and the desirability of extending government participation in land use goals. Interviews with 179 persons were conducted. The data reveal a possible direct relationship between social class and the acceptance of land use and economic controls. The project endorses the following proposals: Local regulations should require housing developers to provide the streets and utilities and to dedicate land for parks and schools. Taxation should be used as a regulatory tool for the attainment of public policy objectives. A federal commission is needed to encourage comprehensive land management programs. It is also suggested that future land management questionnaires should use random samples and ask questions about specific land use problems.

An Analysis of the Need for Human Resource Development in Nigeria (open access)

An Analysis of the Need for Human Resource Development in Nigeria

The present study was concerned with seeking the opinions of Nigerian employers, Nigerians studying in the United States, and those studying in Nigeria concerning the need for human resource development in Nigeria. Data were collected through questionnaires mailed to selected Nigerian employers and to Nigerian students studying at various United States college campuses and at Nigerian university campuses. Problems of unemployment and critical shortages of skilled manpower continue to be rampant in Nigeria. The present investigation, through an analysis of questionnaire responses, seems to support the impression that little is really being done by Nigerian organization to upgrade and strengthen personnel talent in a planned and organized way. Most companies have no central long-range goal to guide their manpower development efforts. Much more time, effort, and expense are likely being devoted to the introduction of new operating systems or pieces of equipment than to the improvement of people.

Ecological Factors Related to Juvenile Delinquency (open access)

Ecological Factors Related to Juvenile Delinquency

The purpose of this study is to discover the spatial distribution of adjudicated delinquents and to analyze the relationship of these delinquents to a distribution of other attributes of population aggregates. Specifically, this study focuses on the relationship in Fort Worth between the social and economic data of a specific zone. Chapter I and III of this study discuss previous ecological studies and their findings. Furthermore, possible restriction to previous studies are brought out and the design for this study is developed. Chapter III presents the methodology design used in the project. Chapter IV and V present findings of this study and discuss implication drawn from these findings. Moreover, statistically significant results are explained with regard to present sociological knowledge and future research.

Field study to determine plutonium contents of wheat and soil in a warm humid area (open access)

Field study to determine plutonium contents of wheat and soil in a warm humid area

A field study was initiated in the fall of 1974 at the United States Energy Research and Development Administration's Savannah River Plant near Aiken, South Carolina, to determine the spatial and temporal variation of plutonium in soil-plant systems, with wheat as the crop of interest. The study was conducted on a field adjacent to a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant. Soil in this field was lightly contaminated with plutonium originating from atmospheric releases by the reprocessing plant during its 20 years of operation and from global fallout. The plant releases provided a true industrial source of plutonium for study purposes. (auth)
