Fusion-driven actinide burner design study. Second quarterly progress report

The Second Quarterly Progress Report summarizes the status at the mid-point of the conceptual design effort. The fusion driver continues to pose some of the principal design problems due to the necessity of advancing plasma engineering and technology for long pulse, high duty cycle operation. The development of credible design solutions to these problems is one of the major objectives of the study. The TF and OH coil designs have been modified to provide a more compact arrangement in the nose region of the TF coils and to ensure fully cryostable operation. A unique concept has been developed to effectively shield the TF coils from the poloidal fields. A vacuum vessel concept which separates the functions for sustaining the differential pressure load and for sealing the vacuum system is described. The thickness of the blanket has been decreased to reduce the power density and the actinide inventory. Determination and presentation of actinide depletion characteristics represents a major element thus far in the study and is a principal objective. Evaluation of the changes in the hazard only during irradiation proved to be an inadequate measure of the reduction in long term hazards due to the importance of radioactive daughter products which …

TFTR vacuum system considerations

The Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) vacuum system has been designed using conventional ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) components and technology. This report describes the rationale and motivation that went into its design. Mercury diffusion pumps were selected over other existing high vacuum pumps. A system of four pumps is designed to provide a base pressure of less than or equal to 8 x 10/sup -6/ Pa and a low impurity level within the torus. These features will be accomplished without in situ bakeout, but the system will be pre-baked before final assembly and periodically discharge cleaned during operation. Bakeout of the total vacuum system has been omitted in the initial design because it is believed that satisfactory conditions of the walls can be obtained without it. However, bakeout is being considered as a design alternative. Calculated spectra of mass to charge (M/e) ratios obtained from the residual gas analyzers (RGA's) to be used in the vacuum system forelines are presented. These spectra indicate the ability of the RGA's to monitor the tritium content of the vacuum system. Forced oscillations of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory's dry hot rock geothermal reservoir

Equations of motion are derived for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory's geothermal reservoir consisting of an elastic half-space (rock), with an open vertical pipe from the surface connected at depth with a vertical penny-shaped fracture. This reservoir, which is filled with water (laminar flow through a pipe), is subjected to seismic waves and/or blast-like impulses applied downhole. Oscillations (responses) of the water column, of the downhole internal net pressure required to keep the fracture open, and of the fracture itself, are found for the reservoir. If the fracture is continuously oscillated subject to pressure waves applied downhole and failure of the fracture surface occurs, it is usually through fatigue after a long period of time. Of concern next is transient oscillation of the fracture when down-hole blast-like impulses are applied. Of particular concern is the maximum amplitude, G/sub max/, of the fracture (crack) oscillation in early cycles. Generally, failure due to G/sub max/ is attributed singly to the strength of the fractured rock being exceeded. Since the period, tau, of the oscillations is sensitive to the radius, R, of the fracture, experimental determination of tau, in conjunction with Eq. (20), will permit R to be evaluated accurately. Class Notes for a PL/I Course

Presented here are notes for a course in PL/I. They might serve as a guide to those who are developing a course, or as class notes for that course. They might be useful as a textbook independent of any course; as such a textbook, however, they are not self-contained because of the built-in assumption that they will supplement lectures and be accompanied by manuals. Very nearly the full language is taught here, with the emphasis on concepts rather than practical details. Discussion of I/O is avoided until roughly the midpoint of the course. The hoped-for consequence for students is an enhanced perception and understanding of the many concepts and their logical relationships. The dawning of the age of transportability for PL/I programs gives the user a reason, for the first time, to avoid convenient but illegal language.

U-Pu-Zr Metal Alloy: a Potential Fuel for LMFBR's

This report critically reviews the available information pertinent to the potential use of uranium-plutonium-zirconium alloy fuels clad with stainless steel in LMFBR's. The areas considered include breeding potential, burnup potential, thermal performance, fuel fabricability, fuel reprocessing, and safety considerations. Because information on uranium-plutonium-zirconium alloys is limited, wide use is made of experience with EBR-II metallic driver fuel to infer advantages and limitations of uranium-plutonium-zirconium fuels. It is concluded that sufficient potential exists for the applicability of uranium-plutonium-zirconium fuels to LMBFR's to warrant additional analytical and experimental studies.

STRONG TURBULENCE and THE ANOMALOUS LENGTH OF STORED PARTICLE BEAMS

A dispersion relation, including strong turbulence, is derived for short-wavelength longitudinal self-perturbations of bunched electron beams. The effects of radiation damping and quantum excitation are included. Assuming that turbulence stabilizes coherent oscillations allows the derivation of a formula for bunch length which gives excellent fits to the data from SPEAR. As a special case of the formalism, an integral equation which describes the longitudinal self-perturbations of proton beams is derived.
