Comparison of solar pond concepts for electrical power generation (open access)

Comparison of solar pond concepts for electrical power generation

The objectives of this study were to: (1) Identify the various solar pond concepts for electric power generation, including but not limited to: (a) nonconvective salt gradient solar pond, (b) ponds with various plastic or other membranes at suitable locations to minimize or eliminate convection, (c) ponds which are totally or partially gelled to reduce or eliminate convection, and (d) shallow convecting ponds; (2) analyze and compare the performance of these various concepts; and (3) estimate the pond cost and overall power plant system cost for each concept assuming the nonconvective gradient salt pond as the base case. The approach includes a preliminary design of several power plant systems based on solar pond concepts, and performance and economic evaluation based on these preliminary designs. (WDM)

Six phase rectifier digital computer simulation (open access)

Six phase rectifier digital computer simulation

A digital computer program has been developed for the simulation of a six-pulse converter with a resistance-inductance load. The program calculates the time histories of the voltages and currents on both the ac and dc sides of the rectifier bridges. The grid delay angle is calculated in terms of the load current, supply voltage, and commutating reactance. The program is written in FORTRAN and is executable on the CDC7600 Plotted output of ten variables can be requested. This program is a preliminary effort toward the development of analytical and programming techniques that can be used in the simulation of the twelve-pulse controlled rectifiers in the TFTR toroidal field coil energy conversion system.

Sealed storage cask concept. Cask closure concept evaluation. Interim report (open access)

Sealed storage cask concept. Cask closure concept evaluation. Interim report

A program was conducted to evaluate four candidate storage cask closure configurations. Four major areas were evaluated to provide a basis for selection of an acceptable closure(s). These were: (1) weldability, (2) suitability of available nondestructive examination methods for determining weld soundness, (3) closure configuration structural soundness, and (4) economics. A relative ranking of each closure configuration was made using the study results. The corner weld configuration was ranked as the most desirable, followed by the threaded plug and seal weld, the circumferential butt-weld and the multiplate in order of decreasing desirability. This report recommends that the structural analysis be continued on the first and second ranked closures to provide a quantitative evaluation capability of their structural integrity and that ultrasonic examination of the corner weld closure configuration be demonstrated. A remote demonstration of welding and nondestructive examination capability of the corner weld is also recommended.

Gasification in pulverized coal flames. First quarterly progress report, July--September 1975 (open access)

Gasification in pulverized coal flames. First quarterly progress report, July--September 1975

This project is concerned with the production of power and synthesis gases from pulverized coal via suspension gasification. Specifically, the concentric jet and vortex gasifiers, with separation of oxidation and reduction zones, will be investigated. Gasifier performance will be correlated with internally measured temperature and concentration profiles. A suction pyrometer will be used to simultaneously measure temperature and gas concentrations. Rapid species analysis will be provided by a UTI Q-30C mass spectrometer system. To date, a coal-handling facility has been developed, test cell design has been initiated, and preliminary literature searches have been made. A coal crusher, pulverizer, feeder, and sieve shaker are on order. Preliminary consultations are underway concerning the mass spectrometer system. (auth)

Structural analysis of TFTR vacuum vessel bellows and bellows cover sections (open access)

Structural analysis of TFTR vacuum vessel bellows and bellows cover sections

A structural evaluation of the bellows and bellows cover sections was undertaken in order to confirm the structural integrity of these TFTR vacuum vessel components in the prescribed operating environment. The evaluations investigate component stability, stress, and deflection behavior. The products of this investigation appearing in this report include; (1) Structural verification of the vacuum bellows as currently defined in an operating environment of one atmosphere external pressure and 93/sup 0/C (200/sup 0/F) uniform temperature. (2) The establishment of a structurally adequate design configuration for the bellows cover section. (3) The presentation of a parametric study which indicates the effects of varying some bellows cover section parameters in order to obtain acceptable variations of this design configuration. (4) A verification of bellows and bellows cover section integrity to preclude a fatigue type failure for reactor startup and shutdown cyclic life in the design environment.

Structural analysis of TFTR toroidal field coil conceptual design (open access)

Structural analysis of TFTR toroidal field coil conceptual design

The conceptual design evaluation of the V-shaped toroidal field coils on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor has been performed by detailed structural analysis with the finite element method. The innovation provided by this design and verified in this work is the capability to support toroidal field loads while simultaneously performing the function of twist restraint against the device axial torques resulting from the vertical field loads. The evaluations made for the conceptual design provide predictions for coil deflections and stresses. The results are available for the separate effects from toroidal fields, poloidal fields, and the thermal expansion of the coils as well as for the superposition of the primary loads and the primary plus thermal loads.

Collection of preliminary thermal and structural calculations for TFTR components (open access)

Collection of preliminary thermal and structural calculations for TFTR components

Many scoping type thermal/hydraulic and structural calculations have been performed for the TFTR component conceptual designs. Five analyses are still applicable to the current October conceptual design. The analyses are for the vacuum vessel wall temperature, neutral beam calorimeter thermal response, the discharge time of the tritium line, estimate of air leakage in the TFTR Test Cell, and maximum allowable TF coil temperature. The methods of analysis and the results are presented in this report.

TFTR generator load assessment (open access)

TFTR generator load assessment

Typical experimental load demands on the TFTR generators are illustrated based on the electrical characteristics of the field coils, the coil leads, the main bus work, the various auxiliary bus work, the rectifiers, and transformers. The generator MW capacities are shown to be adequate for the proposed experimental operations with allowances made for variations in the final designs. The generator MVA capacities are shown to be adequate provided portions of the TF and EF rectifiers are freewheeled at selected times.

Structural analysis and optimization procedure of the TFTR device substructure

A structural evaluation of the TFTR device substructure is performed in order to verify the feasibility of the proposed design concept as well as to establish a design optimization procedure for minimizing the material and fabrication cost of the substructure members. A preliminary evaluation of the seismic capability is also presented. The design concept on which the analysis is based is consistent with that described in the Conceptual Design Status Briefing report dated June 18, 1975

Thermal analysis of the TFTR vacuum vessel wall protective plate (open access)

Thermal analysis of the TFTR vacuum vessel wall protective plate

The TFTR vacuum vessel is to be protected with tungsten plates from the effects of neutral beam impingement. A thermal analysis is performed to determine the maximum allowable beam intensity (power per unit area) under normal and faulted operating conditions. In order to permit a faulted pulse, or unattenuated injection, to occur after normal pulse series, the maximum neutral beam energy flux should be below 10 kW/cm/sup 2/ depending on the beam design configuration, to prevent the melting of the plates. The analyses were performed using an injection time of 0.5 second and a cycle time of 300 seconds.

Polarizability of the low frequency excitations in disordered solids. [Polymethylmethacrylate] (open access)

Polarizability of the low frequency excitations in disordered solids. [Polymethylmethacrylate]

An attempt to find manifestations of an electric dipole moment associated with the low-temperature thermal properties of glasses has enabled the setting of very low limits for GeO/sub 2/ and PMMA, 0.06 and 0.16 Debye respectively. Measurements of the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the electric field dependence of the thermal conductivity of SiO/sub 2/ in conjunction with dielectric measurements by Schickfus et al. has pinned down some of the features of a tunneling systems model. The potentials must be nearly symmetric (..delta../sub 0/>> ..delta../sub A/) and the distribution of these states, n(..delta..)/sub tun/, must be considerably more uniform than one would calculate from measurements of the specific heat of SiO/sub 2/, n(..delta..)/sub C/sub p/.
