The problem for the project emerged threefold: (1) to further explore the uses of the graphite medium including the possible integration of wet media color on large surfaces, (2) to use the human figure as subject matter, and (3) to explore gessoed drawing surfaces of masonite and paper.

The intention of this study is to examine the relationship between fired clay and certain found objects. Working from the assumption that clay, being a natural substance, shares a common ground with certain other natural substances, such as wood, hemp, rock, etc., a primary aspect of the investigation consists of discovering successful combinations of these materials. In each design two subordinate problems were encountered. These were (1) determining the best means of combining and preserving objects in a semi-permanent state and (2) ascertaining whether the thrown form is by itself visually satisfying or if it would be improved by distortion.

Thesis explores the vocal music of the Comédies-Ballets written by Jean Baptiste Lully and Jean Baptiste Molière. Susan Kaye Schafer provides historical context to the collaboration between Lully and Molière and investigates the content of their work.

This paper analyzes Johann Sebastian Bach's Cantata No. 52, Falsche Welt, dir trau' ich nicht. Janette Cook Williams presents findings on the evolution of the sacred solo cantata and examines the style of Bach's work.

The problem which concerns this thesis is the directing, designing, and mounting of Woody Allen's Play It Again, Sam under the auspices of the 1974 North Texas State University Summer Repertory Theatre Company. Chapter I contains a detailed examination of the playscript, an analysis of each of the characters, and criticism of Woody Allen's work. Chapter II deals with the chief problems and strategies involved in production. The preparation of the playscript, the cast and production staff, the design process, the front-of-house activities, and rehearsal experience are discussed in detail. Chapter III is the production book itself and includes the script, the blocking, and the light and sound cues. Chapter IV contains a critical summary of the project and recommendations for future study.

This study recounts the events surrounding the Federal Radio Commision's (FRC) 1931 decision to remove radio station KGEF. Robert Shuler, minister of Los Angeles' Trinity Methodist Church, South, used KGEF to attack city officials and organizations whom he felt were corrupt. Chapters explore Shuler's background and acquisition of KGEF, his use of KGEF, and FRC and Court hearings and appeals. The study concludes that the action against Shuler, resulting in deletion of KGEF, may have resulted from political pressures. In spite of the "landmark" status of the Shuler case, his First Amendment rights may have been violated.

Performances of multimedia works are hampered by the difficulty of controlling large numbers of incandescent lamps rapidly and accurately. The instrument described in this document is aimed at alleviating this problem. Chapter I describes the design and operation of the voltage-controlled dimmer unit and the DC controller. Chapter II describes step-by-step procedures for building the instrument. Schematics, wiring diagrams, and illustrative photographs are included. Chapter III discusses some of the aesthetics and philosophy of multimedia composition, and then describes various scenarios which utilize the instrument. Included are the connection of peripheral control equipment, audio/Video interfacing, and the potential for constructing prepared tapes which will automatically drive the dimmers. The prototype was built at the NTSU Electronic Music Center.

This investigation is concerned with the analysis of a production of Peter Pan, a large-scale musical play, which was presented at Dallas Repertory Theatre in February of 1975. This analysis is intended to be both an educative discussion of the experimental nature of the show and a practical guide to the production of a typical musical play by a non-professional company. The most outstanding elements examined include the following: (1) casting a teen-age boy, instead of an adult, in the title role; (2) casting children in all children's roles, and adults in all adult roles; (3) modification of the script and score to implement the casting of children in key roles; (4) the utilization of a short motion picture to simulate the flying of actors onstage.

The investigation presented here was accomplished using agglutination and agar gel immunodiffusion techniques to compare Azotobacter agilis s 3at, A. chroococcum Italy AC 16, A. macrocytogenes St. M and A. vinelandii ATCC 12837. It was found that the agglutination titers differed sufficiently to allow partial identification of the four species. The homologous and heterologous systems studied by agar gel immunodiffusion tests showed that each of the four Azoto bacter species differed sufficiently in their soluble antigens to give distinct, identifiable patterns of antigen-antibody reactions on Ouchterlony agar plates. These studies also showed several antigens common to the four species tested and the resultant antigen-antibody cross reactions. The results of these investigations suggest that this approach opens a new avenue for the identification of the organisms of genus Azotobacter and perhaps, by extension, the family Azotobacteraceae.

In selecting a thesis project, my interest and experience with fibre-tip pen drawings suggested that further investigations would be profitable. Fibre-tip pens provide a fast and convenient means to draw under outdoor conditions. The pens make dense black and consistent lines at whatever speed they are moved. The ink supply is automatic; not requiring a separate container for dipping and not requiring cleaning. Fibre-tip pens designed to make lines of different widths are commercially available at low cost.

The focus of the study is the way which members of the press corps in the Texas Capitol influence policy-making through their friendships with legislators and through the news stories which they write. Methods of study included questionnaires to reporters and to legislators, interviews with members of both groups, and review of news stories written about the regular session of the 64th Texas Legislature. Respondents reported that journalists were used as "expert consultants" in legislative strategy as well as in policy content areas. While informal relationships were found to have an impact on policy, published news stories were perceived as having greater influence.

Several final sewage effluents from the Denton Disposal Plant were demonstrated to contain Poliovirus types II and III. Pleated encapsulated filters at pH3.5 enhanced the recovery of the Poliovirus at a higher tier in comparison with nitrocellulose filter (Millipore) and glass fiber filter of pore size 0.45u. This thesis explores problems that face us today in our quest to eliminate viral pathogens from the natural and waste water needed for human, domestic, and industrial consumption. Preliminary experiments concern the use of immunofluorescence, and immunodiffusion techniques as a means of poliovirus identification, which invariably suggests that these techniques may be useful as rapid screening procedures of water samples for presence of potentially pathogenic viruses.

To investigate this process I selected, as my creative project, the execution of a series of drawings. The objective of my creative project was the synthesis of additive/subtractive procedures of a drawing from its inception to its completion. A written journal was utilized to gather data pertinent to the investigation.

This was a comparative study in which Texas teachers of industrial plastics and the employers of Texas plastic industries were surveyed in order to evaluate the need for various knowledge and skills of the plastics industry. The respondents believed that basic knowledge of plastics was much needed, and knowledge of the thermoplastic family is of more importance than of the thermoset family. It was also concluded that knowledge of demonstration skills is of only average or lesser importance than knowledge of other areas.

The purpose of this study is to examine the development of a series of paintings and drawings confined to the subject of trains and the derailings of trains. This creative project includes a descriptive study which documents the development as it occurs in the series. The written material is utilized with regard to its relevance in uncovering pertinent conditions and events that contributed to the drawing and painting processes during the execution of the series.

The muscle aldolase from Ambystoma tigrinum has been purified 73-fold to a final specific activity of 13.2 units per mg. The purified enzyme appeared to be homogenous by ultracentrifugation and electrophoretic criteria. A molecular weight of 159,000 + 1000 was determined by gel filtration on Sephadex G-200 and high speed sedimentation equilibrium ultracentrifugation. The enzyme migrated identically with rabbit muscle aldolase when subjected to sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and is apparently a tetramer of nearly identical subunits of approximately 40,000 MW. The catalytic constants of the salamander enzyme were similar to those reported for other muscle aldolases with the exception of the unusually low Fru-P2/FlP ratio.

The topographical landscapes of Miss Schell represent diversity in subject matter and media that includes oil, watercolor, and lithograph pencil scenes of Canada, New England, and Pennsylvania. Documentation used in the research included interviews and correspondence with her friends and students; photographs and slides of her paintings and drawings; exhibition lists of her works; and writings of her art ideals. This data formed five chapters of the thesis. The Introduction is a research overview; the second is her biography; the third analyzes three landscapes; the fourth compares her landscapes with eight contemporaries; and, the fifth states a conclusion of her importance as an art educator who transmitted Robert Henri's philosophies. A catalogue also is included,

The problem of this study was to arrange, develop, and stage creatively a complete dance composition in four parts using the ocean as a thematic source. The five specific purposes relating the theme and the choreography were developed and expressed through the medium of modern dance. A written report including the historical and scientific background of the thematic source and the choreographic process was also submitted. A video-tape recording is also available of the completed dance composition.

The present study was concerned with investigating children's generalized locus of control of reinforcement and its possible relationship to the demographic variables of birth order and family size. The sample consisted of 93 school children in Grades 6, 7, and 8. The analysis of data was by a 2 x 3 factorial design. Results indicated no significant differences in the generalized locus of control orientations of first-born, intermediate-born, and youngest children. Results also indicated that children of these different birth order positions from small families and from large families did not differ significantly in their generalized locus of control orientation. A correlational study of the data showed that the children's locus of control orientations were unrelated to sex differences.

Hexokinase has been found in a soluble and a bound form in homogenates of Ascaris suum muscle. Cellulose acetate electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing, and ion exchange chromatography confirmed the presence of only one molecular form of hexokinase in this muscle. A procedure for purifying hexokinase from Ascaris muscle has been developed. The physical and catalytic properties of the enzyme are comparable to mammalian hexokinases. The enzyme is a monomer with a molecular weight of 100,000 as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and gel filtration. The Michaelis constants for glucose and ATP are 4.7 x 10-3 M and 2.2 x 10-4 M, respectively. Ascaris' hexokinase also exhibits end-product inhibition by glucose 6-phosphate and ADP. It is postulated that the kinetic para meters of the enzyme are the results of its function, that of generating glucose 6-phosphate primarily for glycogen synthesis.

This study was designed to determine the effect of inorganic phosphate in the growth media of A. vinelandii on the synthesis and accumulation of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and cellular morphology. Burk's media with no added phosphate and ten times normal phosphate resulted in altered cells, lower levels of protein, and decreased cell populations. PHB accumulation was much higher in the cultures with no added phosphate; however, the polymer granules differed in appearance from those of normal cells and had a decreased rate of utilization. The amount of PHB deposited in cells grown in media containing ten times the normal phosphate level was lower than that found in regular media.

It was the purpose of this thesis to write an original script especially designed for Readers Theatre and to direct and produce that script for public performance. The thesis consists of an introduction which includes background material, a review of the literature concerning Readers Theatre, and the problems of writing an original script. The thesis includes the script as well as an evaluation of the attendant problems concerning the direction and production.

Grimaldi is a synesthetic work composed of aural and visual media including noise, tone, electronic devices, lighting and theatrical events. It is designed for solo saxophone with an accompanying ensemble of eight wind instruments and four percussion. The most important aspect of the piece is its texture, which consists of constantly changing and interacting aural and visual events. The compositional process of Grimaldi began with the selection of a form constructed of two equal arches of unequal subdivision, and the designation of texture for each section. After these selections were made, the theatrical elements were selected, based on a traditional story about the clown Joseph Grimaldi (1787-1836). By gradually refining these general selections into specific notation, and by considering them as a whole rather than individually, consistent relationships were maintained.

Although President Theodore Roosevelt intervened in the Dominican Republic in 1905 to prevent European creditor nations from securing a foothold at the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal, the idea persists among certain historians that Roosevelt's motives for intervention were primarily economic, not political. A close examination of Dominican economic history from the inauguration in 1882 of the tyrannical President Ulises Heureaux, combined with a study of American diplomacy toward the Dominican Republic to the initiation of the customs receivership in 1907, demonstrates that American policy attempted to thwart outside intervention, not promote economic subversion.
